A New Top One Hundred List For Bloggers

It sure if fun to see competition. Marco Richter has a pretty cool list that you might want to check out. Below is a guest post that he wrote for GCDC. Please give Marco a warm welcome and be sure to check out his list! Marco does a great job on his blog and it might also be something you’d like to check out.

Why my Blogs about Blogging Top List is Different

Marco RichterI published my new toplist of blogs about blogginglast weekend and it gains some great interest already.

Out there, you can find several toplists of blogs on different topics. Mark over at 45n5.comhas come up

with a Top-100 list, which has now over 200 blogs in it. All of them are about “make money online”.

Why my List is Different

Almost every list is at least in part relying on Google PageRank for ranking the blogs. If it comes to earn money with your blog by selling links or doing paid posts or whatever, your payment will be higher, if you have a higher PageRank. So, Google PR is used to determine part of your income, when you´re in make money blogging.

I wanted to create a new algorithm for ranking blogs. By letting Google PageRank out of consideration, new bloggers who have still NO PageRank get a chance to compete with older blogs. I find this fair, even though it´s not getting easier to make it up the list.

Last point is, the list does only list blogs, which cover the topic of blogging itself. Many bloggers contacted me and wished to be on the list. Some of them were blogging about how to make money – of course with a blog – but no articles on blogging could be found on them. I like these blogs too, but the list is not about making money and so I referred them to Mark´s list instead.

Some Technical Information on the List

My list is using several metrics to determine each blogs position in the ranking. The list only show 3 of them, which come from FeedBurner and Technorati using their APIs. Over the weekend, I have coded all the needed scripts to fetch the data, sort the entries and create the final list itself.

The list is going to be updated on an automated daily basis. At this moment, it´s still handwork as some of the used APIs are not as reliable as needed. After fixing that problem, the list will be set on autopilot and I´ll install a cronjob to come up with fresh results every morning automatically.

How to Climb the List

You can see from the shown metrics – incoming links, from … blogs and RSS subscriber count are being published. They are also the most important metrics in the ranking. So climbing up the list should basically is very easy. Just collect more links from more other blogs and get more people to subscribe to your feed.

What´s coming next

At the moment, I´m planning to implement to new features to the list. First is to link to the last post on each blog and second is to provide a little widget, bloggers can use to show their current ranking on the list.

Hi Marco. I checked out your list. If it’s purely about blogs that talk about blogging, then you can ignore the inquiry I sent you. Kudos to you for coming up with a formula that doesn’t include PR. :)

I gotta say that Marco’s Top100 is excellent! My blog is fairly new, so if the top100 uses Google PR, I wouldn’t have a chance!
