Ask Me Questions About How To Make Money Online!
Getting started with making money online can be such an overwhelming thing. As you may know, I have been doing this for a really long time and some people even consider me to be an expert. {cough}
If you read my last post, then you know that I am not going to be able to spend too much time on the blog for a few days because I will be out of town. Rather than just leave my blog dormant while I am gone, I decided that it would be an excellent idea to write a post inviting you to ask me questions in the comments.
What can I help you with? Leave me a comment letting me know and when I get back on Tuesday I will be sure to read the comments and answer as many as I can. If you ask some really good questions, I will probably even use them as future blog posts and help you score some traffic by giving you credit for the questions and by point links back to your blog.
I look forward to coming home and helping answer your questions. Also, it is important for me to tell you that there is no such thing as a stupid question. Ask me anything you want, and I will be happy to help you when I get home.

Hi Gary… my question evolves around tying affiliate marketing models into a new type of business model for local markets. I want to build a business around the ideas and methods of Internet Marketing but develop a new system that creates new opportunities on a smaller scale in my local market area. The medium for small towns or suburban areas is still old school news print and yellow page crap. Small biz owners are screaming for a system and I want to create something with new excitement and opportunity. What are your thoughts?

Hi, Garry,
First off, thank you for doing this. This is one of two amazingly motivational e-mails I’ve received tonight.
Now, my question seems simple, and it’s quite possibly just me being stuck due to not doing it, but what I have been having trouble grasping are the transitions between keyword research, finding a product, and posting; mostly the first one. I understand that it’s got to do with linking the two, but there’s such a massive array of affiliate programs to choose from. How do you make sense of it all? And how do you feel justified with so much of it?
I think that may be my major problem is that question “do I feel justified in doing this? Does it cross my moral boundaries?” Either way, do you have any advice other than “just do it”? I’ve been looking at various ways, and I think the best way to get started with would be using usfreeads or something of the sort, but there’s just such a mindblowing amount of information that’s all the same, with everyone offering paid courses that all look like they say the exact same thing and will probably still leave me asking “now what?”
It’s pretty confusing, man. Anyway, thanks again for the inspiring e-mail and post, and for your time. You make one hell of a good contribution to the web. Cheers.

Gary, thanks for the offer…here is a question I always wanted to ask but was never appropriate.
If you had an 18 year old son or daughter just out of high school, with honors and scholarship offers, and they came to you and said, “Dad…I do not think I will go to University. I want to be like you. I am going to start a blog and make my living online.”. What would your reply be?
Roman

Roman,
Maybe I can help with this question from a different point of view. As a recent college grad (computer science), I am venturing into making money online. The beauty about this is if I fail, I have something to fall back on. Blogging is def. not guaranteed money, so I think a backup plan should be in place BEFORE starting on this journey.
Blogging is also something you can do anywhere, anytime. This makes it a great time killer for students, because when you get out you already have the experience to make it grow–as well as the piece of paper.
It can also earn some beer money while at school
With that said–I’m not a parent, so I understand this isn’t the answer you are looking for. Just thought it was some nice discussion here in the comments. I am curious to see what Garry says.

I think Roman has an excellent point. Having a back up plain in place before tackling any risky but rewarding venture is a wonderful idea.
That said, I am tackling this adventure without a net. A year ago or so my full time, real time business was taken down by the roiling in the credit markets. That sector of the economy (real estate and residential renovations) was the first and the hardest hit. So re-inventing my career here online, structured around those things I have always been good at (writing and making complex subjects simple) was a no-brainer.
As for Patrick’s thought above, that is a simple one. No offense Patrick. Only do it, here or offline if you are certain that it is honest and that it represents you with integrity. Garry helped me get started by setting up my first wp blog thru his hostgator offer. His offer and how he follows up, friendly and prompt is a perfect example. He was quick and thorough and clearly he wanted to help get me going. Despite lots of cute ads everywhere Garry is the genuine article and it shines thru.
Thanks for the encouragement and help during a tough time Garry.

Traffic, Traffic, Traffic. Whether it is Adsense or Affiliates you need traffic. Usually search engine traffic. How do we get it? Link Building. What are some sources for where to build links? If Article Marketing, how many do you think it takes to get traction on a low comp key phrase? Medium Phrase? Do you support the idea of “building your own network of blogs” also for link building? How many blogs? How much content on each blog? How long does it really take? I know that is a lot of questions.
I have been successful elsewhere, but it took about 5 years to really gain some traction. It earns on average $3000/mo. The revenue is shared. I’m now on my own venture, and it just seems to be taking a long time. I’ve been going 8mos and my top earns were $200/mo. I can only work about 5 hrs a week on my own stuff. Am I on track?
Also, It seems my blog starts doing well, it had even been averaging $8 to $10/day but then I add a post and bang, back to 0. Is my content too varied? Should I change it to be one post per page?
Boy, I’m sorry that was a lot. But I am one of your biggest fans, so hopefully, I’m worth it.

But on a serious note,
I set up a simple directory blog using the modified theme you taught me how to do in the 60 min video, did a bunch of blog posting and article submissions.
Its in a competitive market and doesn’t rank in the top 100 serps for google but I’m #1-3 on msn for about 35 pages.
Sounds impressive right?
I get about 20 visitors on a good day, so far. But when the visitors show up Ive been averaging a 20 to 40 percent CTR. That kinda makes me nervous, but at the same time isn’t that the idea? So I guess my question is if you have pages that have outrageous CTR’s or if you ever worry about it being too high.

Hey Garry, I’m also really curious about clown socks.
Actually, my question is, How long do you promote a product that doesn’t seem to be making money before you move on to the next one? I have a couple of things that I keep throwing more time and more articles at and also did some PPC, but it doesn’t seem to be doing too well. It is a clickbank product that seems to be pretty successful for some.
At this point, I wonder if the competition is too high, or if I need to do some more keyword research and some tweaking.
Thank you

Hi Garry,
I have a question that I think may help many people. You may have already answered it, so if I missed it, my apologies. Here goes…
I’m wondering about inbound links. How do you go about asking, and who do you ask, for a link to one or any of your sites? I know that there is some fuss about Google when it comes certain ways of collecting one-way links, and I know that in order to do some sort of exchange, it’s desirable for you to have a PR of at least 3. So far, I have no sites at a PR 3, but I’m finding it difficult to figure out how to get them there without the kind generosity of someone with a high PR.
I would certainly be willing to do a 2 for 1 exchange (and I thought about making this offer on Twitter). I have 6 blogs and a few other stand alone websites. I’ve got 2 or 3 that I would love to get incoming links for the purpose of raising PR, but haven’t the foggiest idea of who or how to ask.
Thanks Garry!! You rock.

Garry,
I’d also appreciate the opportunity for an instant messenger conversation as you suggested with Danny. Sounds like I’m in a similar boat as Wayne Key, having my residential housing business struggling in the current economy. I’m hoping to find something that as Mike said above is less geocentric and can be done anywhere. I appreciate your willingness to help.
Thanks!

Thanks.

Another question I have is re: www. or no www.
I set up a site with no www. but in webmaster tools its listed both ways? I guess my question is if one is “more correct” and do I have to do a re-direct for the other.
Thanks Garry!
Hope everyting went your way this weekend!
I was sending positive thoughts your way!

Garry:
Best of luck to you with your meeting today. Here is my question. As I see it, there are three main areas for making money online — making niche blogs (which I take to be your forte), starting an authority blog such as this, and doing PPC. I’m having analysis paralysis deciding which way to go. If you had to pick one way to get started, what would you suggest? I am not a newbie, so I should be able to implement whatever I do pretty quickly (I’ve been blogging for a few years but with a personal/news site that doesn’t make much money but was never designed or intended to so I’m looking to start something new now), and I can afford PPC (I mention this because some people may not have the money/credit to do PPC, but this is not an issue for me).
Thanks.
Regards,
J

I have a question on your income pattern especially from AdSense and Affiliate sales. Are you getting most of your online money from the niche blogs (you have many as I see) or from GarryConn.com?

I definitely would tell my son to get a college degree if there was any career he was interested in. I have been studying and working on this IM for over a year and have not made one cent. The original gurus have done well, but they got in at the right time and picked the right niches and products. The internet is constantly changing and is hard to predict. I told my son who did not go to college, “Get a job,” and he did and has not gone back to internet marketing. He may as strictly a sideline. Is the word scam too harsh? I will not sell informational products to the many people who are out of work.

You don’t have to keep writing to keep your ranking. You just need to keep traffic incoming / outgoing and also try to maintain a healthy array of incoming links.
Garry Conn
17 Apr 09 at 9:04 am
There is no limit in terms of getting indexed, especially if you have a sitemap.xml. Sometimes it takes Google a little bit to catch up, but if your blog is healthy, typically everything gets indexed and fairly quickly.
The only concern is your readership. If your readers are used to you writing one per day and then BOOM you start doing like five per day, it can aggravate your readership and cause them to get overwhelmed with too much information.

Hey Gary,
I’ve read on your site, and on countless others that backlinks are the most important aspect of SEO, or at least one of the very most important. So, I’ve done some backlinking on my various sites.
Anyways, today I was researching a new niche market and found what I thought was a decent market, and found one affiliate competitor ranked VERY well for all his keyword phrases who just started in 2009. I went to take a look at his backlinks in Traffic Travis, and lo and behold, he had ZERO back links…thats right not even one!!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.
So what’s your take on that?
I don’t want to list his site here as it may be something I still pursue. I’m going to try and track down your email address and send this there too.
Cheers,
Kevin

I would like to set up a website for my garage door repair business and don’t have a lot of money to spend. Could you recommend any website builder templates that are easy to use.
Also, I’ve put my business on Google Local in my city and I have noticed that my competitors are also in Google Local in my city but they are 15-20 miles away. How do I get in Google Local in other cities to expand my explosure.
