BlackBerry Curve VS Apple iPhone - Which Is Better?

It seems like my wife wants a new cellphone at least once every three months, it’s terrible. Now to be honest, I am really not that big of a cellphone nut. In fact, I really don’t officially even have a cellphone. I just use my wife’s when I need to. Sounds crazy, right? Well, it’s true.

Now, as far as my notebook computer is concerned, I take that thing everywhere. But, that in itself is part of the reason why it’s time for me to break down and purchase a new mobile phone. The problem, however, is the fact that I have no clue which phone is right for me. I was hoping that you could help me decide.

Overall, I have narrowed my selection down to two phones: BlackBerry Curve and the Apple iPhone.

Now before you go jumping on the comment form with your recommendations, allow me to tell you more about my life and what I am looking for in a phone. I am a pretty simple guy, so I don’t need much here. LOL!!!!

Long story short, I am looking for a gadget - whether it be a phone or a device with phone capabilities - that can almost replace my notebook. Before you go saying that that is impossible, let me tell you a little more about what I do with my notebook. I am not a big time gamer, I don’t need hard cord 3d graphic cards and things like that. I pretty much use my notebook exactly what its designed for. I don’t tweak it and I don’t do crazy things with it. My Internet activity is actually quite simple and very boring. All in all, I surf the web, read blogs, publish on my own, check email, instant message and watch YouTube videos.

PlayPhone is a leading mobile media company providing cutting edge personalization and entertainment content to mobile consumers anytime, anywhere.

That is all I really do with my notebook computer and that is all I really want to do with a wireless device, can I get that from a mobile phone? If so, then which phone.

Here is a quick overview of the things I’d like to do with my phone:

  1. Talk on it… duh!!!
  2. Address book.
  3. Camera/ Video
  4. Full Internet Access (full viewing just like on a notebook)
    - Thinking that iPhone might be a little better in that dept.
  5. SMS text messaging
  6. Gmail Talk, Yahoo Instant Messenger, ETC
  7. YouTube Videos
  8. Google Reader, Blogs, etc..

The more I think about it, I am favoring the Apple iPhone, just by reviewing all their features. However, I do leave this up to you. Drop me a comment and let me know which of the two phones would be best for me. Also, perhaps there is a third phone that I am failing to consider? If that’s the case, let me know about that phone as well.

Choosing a phone that best fits my needs is important. All in all, I am just tired of being out and about with my notebook without access via wifi or wireless networks. An example would be watching one of my kid’s ball games. As I enjoy watching the games, I too wouldn’t mind catching up on some things online. Another example is when we’re going on road trips, I’d like to be able to surf the web and do as many of the normal things I do with my laptop using my phone while on the road.

Drop me a comment, I’d really like you to share your thoughts and opinions on this post. :)

You sure you’re not posting this for the keywords? I think there is a war that is about to break out between these two phone systems.
I don’t own either yet, hope to get one of them in the near future (my phone is 3 years old), but I kind of lean towards the iPhone. I have read that many newer phone do have a much higher resolution screen than the iPhone though.
Have you looked and the little Sony laptop? It is not much bigger than a phone and is basically a very tiny laptop.
I’ll be interested to see what you end up with.

I can say its here in the device.

iphones are cool but i like my curve.
check out:
http://www.techcrunch.com/wp-content/iphone_blackberry_chart.gif

it’s old so double check the comparison and any other possible options
In response to the don’t haves -

-Get a unlimited data plan so theres no need for wifi.
-Find and download a stock and weather program if you need it.
-I have 8310 and it’s got the camera and pics obviously.

my curve has a 4gb mem stick. another rumor is the new version of the os will support up to 8gb of mem. The newer version of s/w will have video and voice. with just my 4gbs of mem thats 2hrs of vid with specs comparible to the flip.

honestly its what you choose but i felt the iphone was a cool gadget and my curve is a efficient tool. i carry two phones one for work and one for personal. when my contract comes up on the PERSONAL i may get the iphone but will continue to WORK off my bberry.

1. Don’t forget that you are limited to ATT as your provider. I personally used to work for them and they are ok but you get a lot more for your money and better service with other providers.

2. The Iphone is probably better for general internet access. The BB uses Opera mini for a browser.

3. Email there is no comparison. Blackberry all the way. Especially if you use Outlook. Your Calendar and Contacts will auto sync. Plus you can have up to 10 email address forward to your blackberry and use gmail, yahoo, hotmail, outlook all from one place.

At this time, the iPhone would be the best for these capabilities including the browser, but you may have a lot of trouble typing. I previously wanted the ATT Tilt aka HTC 8925 (unbranded and unlocked) because it has a big screen, all the bluetooth and GPS function, and it has a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Because of the $400-600 price tag a few months back, I purchased the O2 XDA Flame for $300 from my wife’s father. The O2 XDA Flame has a huge screen with an NVIDIA videocard with one of the fastest cell phone processors. The only problem is there is no keyboard and the on screen touch for keyboard is very small.

Instead of looking for phones that are in the “MARKET”, I suggest trying http://howardforums.com/ to find phones that are NOT branded and not in the market of cell phone carriers. Your best bet is those phones are more expensive, but have capabilities that are very very close to mobile computers. Also, search for more HTC model phones. There is one that is a portable computer/phone with I think a 4-5″ screen w/ slide out keyboard. The price is about $1000, but you get what you pay for.

iPhone.. hands down..
Reason: “REAL” web browsing… I waited in line for hours to get mine on iDay last year, and i’ve loved it ever since..
I hear rumors that if you wait for the new v2 iphone it will be something like $200 less…
Go to the apple store and play with one and you’ll love it..

Cost is something to consider for sure. Seems like the Blackberry carries a very reasonable price tag, while the iPhone is quite expensive.

How much of a difference is the Internet surfing experience between the two?

I think in terms of the internet the I phone is supperior. Email wise the Blackberry is king, but honestly, for what you’re describing I think the I phone would suit you better. That being said, the problem with phones is as soon as you buy one another better one comes out…… :D

I really like the iPhone, minus the price… thanks everyone with your advice so far. :)

MoneyBites… pretty much anything you buy it becomes outdated or loses its value the moment you walk off with it.

I think that you should get the iPhone. The web browser is great since it has multitouch. The Software development kit should be available soon. I’m seriously considering one but since I said:
“I probably will not buy one”
I’m going to be eating my own words. I wrote an article on other phones that use Linux or other OS’s on The Linux Blog (http://www.thelinuxblog.com/phones-meet-linux/) and if the OpenMoko was stable I would probably get one of those, but your point of wanting to be able to make calls kind of voids this option since they are still fine tuning it. Check out: http://www.openmoko.com/ and more specifically: http://www.openmoko.com/products-neo-base-00-stdkit.html if you want another alternative to the BlackBerry or iPhone.
But again, I need a new phone soon so I’m considering the iPhone since it does all that I need it to do and then some.

Hope this helps!

- Owen.

I hear that the Blackberry indeed is very durable. I get a little nervous with the touch screen on the iPhone… anyone have any thoughts on that?

We’ll I’ve owned a iPhone since last Sept. and also have spent the last 3 months helping a friend set up his Curve so thought I’d way in, i’ll try to keep it to features that fit your description above.

Note that iPhone is set for a refresh and 3rd party apps, 3G next week (we think, WWDC) so many of iPhones negatives may be null and void by then.

Iphone neg - NO CUT AND PASTE, from your wants that may be big downer.
NO Voice dialing on iPhone either. No user replacable battery. But I have mobile charger and iPhone seems to last most day usually. Both seem on even level as far battery life goes.

Web browser - iPhone for the win, iPhone is almost like using a desktop browser, BB is well, a mobile browser wether you use BB browser or Opera mini. I’d give BB a 4-5, iphone a 8-9.

Screen - iPhone real glass, eight months and not scratch on it. BB 3 months and already scratches on plastic screen, We ended up putting screen protector on it, but that stuffs not much fun to work with, dust/air bubbles. Good case that offers full protection is a must for either.

Mail - both are very good, edge to BB just because of the push feature but gMail/IMAP on mine works very well for me. Contact sync on both are about tied. iPhone is getting Exchange support with the refresh so that point may tip to Apple after next week.

Keyboard - I’ve heard many complain about iPhone not having a real keyboard but after using BB Curve and iPhone I’d have to say i like iPhone better. BB Curve keys are just to small, sure the iPhone has it’s negs but their spell check and auto learning is really very good and keys are much easier to hit.

Usability/interface - Apple FTW, takes 5-6 clicks to accomplish most tasks on BB that are just 1-2 clicks and finger swipe away on iPhone. Photo slide shows -amazing. But the BB has custom themes where the iPhone doesn’t but friend ended up liking theme that apes iPhone anyway. Auto rotate, double tap to zoom, double tap/double finger to zoom out on web pages/google maps/photos is amazing. Apples multi touch is SWEET. BB meh 5, Apple 9.

SW/Syning - both are very good but i’d give Apple a 9, BB a 8 , BB seems a little awkward in interface dept.. But iTunes is resource hog on PC but still very usable.

Feature set goes to BB, but then that may be null and void after next week also.

Anyway, i could use either but if I had to choose it would still be iPhone just for interface/usability/web browser even at a higher price. I’ve had it for 9 months + and the newness has still not worn off, I lay in bed at night and read Digg/blogs constantly. Check my email sitting on porch w/coffee in morns through wifi, delete a email = finger swipe/click/done. Believe me the rotate to landscape and bigger screen/zoom features of iPhone is a BIG plus.

Gary: I tried my nephew’s iPhone and had trouble typing on the keyboard. Also, at $400, I couldn’t justify it when I could pick up a BB Curve for $99. I don’t use the browser because it is just too slow, but it is fabulous for everything else, esp. email. It doesn’t drop calls & has good sound quality. My nephew actually has whole movies and dozens of music CD’s loaded onto his iPhone. That part is pretty amazing. But I don’t care about any of that. I just wanted to have access to my email at all times.

The next generation iPhone is scheduled for later this year so I will check it out and perhaps upgrade then as it would be nice to have a fast browser available without having to carry a laptop around and look for wireless access.
