A Look Back At Older Computers And What Can Be Done With Them

How fast does a computer have to be to surf the Internet? If surfing the Web and checking email is the only thing you want to do, then what are the minimum system requirements needed to do so? What is the oldest computer you can use to get online? Additionally, what options do people have who own older and outdated computers? Is it safe to run the Microsoft Windows 98 operating system? What about even older operating systems such as Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT?

Asking these questions leads to more…

What kind of support is provided for older operating systems? What kind of upgrades are available and what kind of software can you use (such as the most current Web browser)? Do hackers still look for people running older operating systems? Or, are they more focused on trying to crack new insecurities in modern operating systems such as Microsoft Windows XP or the latest, Microsoft Windows Vista?

All of these questions will be covered in my series of articles titled, “A Look Back At Older Computers and What Can Be Done With Them”. This article is the first of many more that will complete the titled series. In this article we take a close look at older computers capable of running only the Windows 3.x operating system. We look at things you can do with them, processes that can be expected from them, and how to keep these systems as up to date and as healthy as possible.
