Garry,

I own an Asus Eee PC 701 4G. It's one of the original models and came with an easy to use Xandros installation... It was nice but didn't suit my needs. I went through a bunch of Linux distros built specifically for the Eee (my favorite being Ubuntu Eee) and now actually have a very light copy of XP installed. It runs blazing fast due to the solid state hard disk, and is perfect for travel. It's really a tweakers dream, I've seen some people making their ultra-portables do some amazing things. The Eee has a MUCH better community than the Acer counterparts with many user forums and places for user-created drivers.

I highly recommend this deal on the 1000HE, it's a bit bigger than mine (the 701 has a 7" screen, this has a 10" screen I believe) so resolution tweaking won't be an issue. These things barely weigh anything and getting used to the smaller keyboard took me all of 10 minutes. I even wrote some Java programs on it and took it to a job interview!

The built in webcam is so ideal for apps like skype. You can video conference anywhere.

Mine starts up in less than 20 seconds and shuts down in about 10. Does your laptop do that?
I love this damn thing.
