Define: New Search Engine Marketing Strategy
So everyone is always looking to score good SERPs, right? Well, I can’t begin to tell you how many times I use search engines to give me the definitions of words or phrases that I don’t know or need to gain a better understanding on.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I can only assume that what I do on search engines is what many other people do. Typically if I am looking for the definition of a word or phrase I will type this into the search bar:
Define keyword
Some examples….
If you look at each of these SERP pages, you will see that the number of indexed results are VERY LOW. Meaning, it wouldn’t take a lot to score a listing on these pages.
Exactly how much traffic go to these various “Define” pages month to month? Really, I don’t know… I this idea just came to me a few minutes ago. However, there is ONE thing that I know for certain. You can and WILL land listings here on these SERPS and you will land them very easily.
Is this gaming Google? Well, it depends on your purpose. If you target certain SERPs in Google and provide terrible quality, eventually that will catch up to you. My advice would be to seriously build a very nice definition page for the keywords you are targeting. Make your page accurate and provide some really excellent information.
Come into this project with the mindset that you are in many ways building your own, “SERP Wiki”. If you look at it in that perspective, then you can keep yourself in “Check” and stay true to providing excellent references.
I have no doubts. I am sure that this will work. It’s just a matter of which “Define Keywords” you want to target and invest the time into creating quality content around it. Some “Define Keywords” will be more competitive than others, so in order to score the top SERP position for more primary keywords, you’ll need to get backlinks pointing to these pages and wait a few months until these backlinks get accounted for in Google. If you play your cards right, eventually you can get these special “Define Keywords” pages to establish their own internal PageRank.
Good luck and give it a try. I am going to be throwing out a few “Define Keywords” myself.
Now… I was going to end my post here… but I decided to be nice and share another tip with you guys and gals.
Observe this screen shot and observe my yellow highlights:
I want to talk to you real quick about targeting keywords in the search engines. The above screen shot shows that I did a search for “define kitchen” and if you notice I have highlighted in yellow every time that exact phrase is found in these listings as well as every time one of the words is used.
Now, in order to run a successful search engine marketing campaign for your targeted keyword phrase, you have to assure that your content for one… is natural, but for two, it has your targeted keyword phrases inside.
- The post title needs to have your targeted keyword phrase in it. It is best to use ONLY the keyword targeted phrase. This phrase needs to be longtail for immediate results.
- The post content needs to have your targeted keyword phrase inside, at least ONCE. I would recommend 250 word articles or more that has three instances of this exact phrase.
- The exact exact phrase needs to be hyperlinked to another source that also contains these same elements that I am speaking of. Hyperlink only one instance of the exact phrase in the content.
- The hyperlinked exact phrase needs to have the same exact phrase in the alt text, sometimes this is called “mouse over text”.
- The URL of the page that you create needs to have the exact phrase in the structure of the address: yourname.com/your-exact-phrase.php. The exact phrase in your URL needs to be as far to the LEFT as possible as search engines will truncate the URL if they are long.
- Include a graphic or an image in your page. That image file needs to be named your-exact-phrase.jpg, etc… that same image can also be hyperlinked to another source page. That image too needs to have alt text for your targeted keyword phrase.
- Lastly, if your keyword phrase is multiple words, you need to use the individual words quite a few times in your content. So in this example, you need to use the word, “Kitchen” and “Define” separately a few times in the content of your page.
- Backlinks indeed can help. If you have made a really COOL page, tell people about it. Get the page submitted into StumbleUpon. Now StumbleUPon is NOFOLLOW so you will NOT get backlinks from them; however, the purpose of submitting into StumbleUpon is so that you can expose your page to a lot of people. If they like what they see, they may indeed write their own post about your page and provide a direct link to it (thus, there is your backlink).
So there you have it… aren’t you glad that I provided this last half to the post? If you liked the tips I have provided you in this post, then I’d like to invite you to join my free mailing list so that you can continue to receive more tips just like this one. Use this form below to subscribe:

Nice Post!
I always use Google’s search bar to define words I’m not familiar with too. I’m too lazy to go type Dictionary.com into my browser or Wiki for that matter.
I usually type: “what is . . .” or “define . . .”.
I never thought about setting up pages to leverage this kind of traffic; it should be interesting.
Hey, why not try the Google keyword tool to figure which words are searched for the most. I think “what is a blog” will do well.
I just tried it, but there seems to be something wrong with Google’s keyword tool, because it’s displaying “Insufficient Data” for every keyword I try.
Anyways, great post. You might be on to something here!

I am telling ya, so many people over-complicate things. More so with SEO than SEM. To me, SEO is all about building a site that is search engine friendly. While I am sure that there are really ADVANCED tweaks and tricks… typically to make a site or blog search engine friendly (optimized) isn’t that difficult. SEM too isn’t that difficult either.. you just got to ask yourself, what are the things that I do with Google and understand that things that you do with Google, many others as well do with Google to.
I look up terms in Google almost daily.
I’ll laugh if someone scores this page.
http://www.google.com/search?q=who+is+john+chow
Someone try and then jump here on a comment and show me the post you made that covers the story titled, “Who Is John Chow”.
That might be a little bit competitive, but if you have a pretty established blog, you very well may be able to hit page one for that.
I could be wrong though… but you never know unless you try. Maybe I’ll do it.

dude…. i think you got it kinda wrong. No one, except maybe you… is typing in:
define keyword
I believe what you wanted was:
define: keyword
that returns more definition style results, also possible to rank for. Guaranteed though, more people are typing “define: keyword” than “define keyword”, because the former is the proper syntax.

No, I don’t have anything wrong. I am aware of the difference between
define: keyword and…
define keyword…
While it is true that define: is one of many advanced operators in Google, I am not talking about that at all.
If and when a COMMON non-savvy user goes to Google to find a definition for a term, such as what my wife does, such as what my teen daughter does, such as what my 10 year old son does: They do NOT use the colon (:) just as I would assume many others people would also do IF they were unaware of the proper advanced operator.
Granted, most seasoned Google users know about this and indeed use the colon (:) However, the average grandmother, the average non-savvy redneck who one fingers on the keyboard does not and what I think would come more natural would be define keyword and not define plus a key that requires the SHIFT button plus another button that a lot of people don’t even know the difference between ; and : but that’s just my humble opinion.

Great post again Garry and thanks for the tips. Will be trying this out and will be interested in the results. You have certainly made this topic very ‘user friendly’. Others try and explain it but all that results is, confusion - Well for me anyway!

Hi Garry,
maybe I count to the “seasoned” user, but I always search simply for “keyword”.
I would say that normal Joe would look for “what is keyword”. Nevertheless the define is a niche which is better to not let on the table !
The “bonus” part of your post is eccelent !
About point 3: way only one outgoing link ?
ciao

Hey Big Blogger…how did you know what I search for! lol
Good stuff Garry…I agree most will either put in define keyword or like Big Blogger said, what is keyword….
This is something that many overlook, I have only heard it mentioned once before…about creating a definition page…now who was that…oh yeah, Yaro Starak…he talked about doing it as post though, not a static page.
Either way, good stuff.

I was more meaning to do this as a blog post as well… but you could do static pages too. In fact, you can build a very nice directory style page listing using category / sub-category file system on WordPress. It’s pretty neat but can get out of hand real quick.

Excellent Tip Garry,
To prove your Garry’s point, just run a Keyword Tool and you will see people do this all the time.
Another thing I would add, use it in TAGS, start by going back through your old post where you Defined something. Tag pages can be a strong traffic draw.

Tags are one of the most profitable sections for me on a WordPress blog. Many people fear the reaper of duplicate content. Overrated. Tag pages if built correctly can be free pages that get indexed in the search engines. You can then monetize them to earn more money. Use MaxBannerAds if you want and rotate between AdSense and Yahoo Publisher and see which works better.

I totally agree that many complicate things from an SEO standpoint when they simply don’t have to. Great point!

The points mentioned by you are very well explained, especially the one that stated naming an image or graphic with exact word phrase.
I would like to add one more thing that when define keyword is used with :(sign) in between, we get good dictionary definitions and different views in a single search result/page.
Date/Time: 8-6-2008 13:45:28 Comment #17834
Indeed… and if Google did a better job promoting their advanced operators, more people would use them.

Nice, I have been reading alot the last few days about low competition search results. I could see this producing some fruit. Plus you can build on the “define” with other words or phrases.
