Do You Share Stuff on Social Networks Naturally?
Often I get requests in email and in instant messenger with requests to submit something or vote for something in a social network. Most of the time I ignore these requests because usually the item to be submitted or voted on doesn’t interest me and is also something that won’t the people who are my friends within the networks I participate in.
I don’t mind being asked to vote on something, but often I think people request for voting or to have items submitted into networks way too often. I often ask for votes too, so this is a two way street, but, I believe that when I send out requests for consideration, the items being presented are relevant to your interests.
With that said, how often do you submit things into social networks on your own and naturally? Most all blogs that I read place a value in having their content submitted, so with you as the blog reader, how often do you vote or submit into social networks.
For me, I do it often. In fact, it is rare that I don’t have some kind of public record for an item I read on the Internet. I have a profile for most of the popular social networks, and through out the day as I read things, I distribute the content as evenly as I can throughout all the networks I participate in.
One of my favorite things to do is use the Note in Reader submission and using StumbleUpon. I have a decent following in both StumbleUpon and the number of people who read my shared items in Google Reader. Also, I like using Twitter but sometimes I feel my tweets get lost in the shuffle of things.
You should submit and vote for things that you read on the Internet. I believe that doing this adds value to the Internet. Many people often complain about the quality of traffic received from social networks; however, if you consider the fact that there is a large percentage of votes that occur just because a friend asks you to, then you should also consider that is the reason for not receiving effective social network traffic yourself.
If you do things naturally, I believe that your following knows the difference. If you check any of my social networks you will see that most all of the content tagged by me is related truly to my own interests. I love blogging, computers, making money online, search engines, WordPress and anything in between or related within.

nicely said ! ..
I don’t think many of my friends are interested in any of the topic above . other than “computers” . I wonder if people are looking for other mentioned topics in social media too !
I’d say there are people interested in these topics… the people who I make friends with in the networks all share common interest. Recently StumbleUpon put that widget on the sidebar that shows me how close a match I am with people I find when viewing their profile. I think that is a really cool feature to StumbleUpon.
Morning G man, hows it going?,
I generally dont share my own stuff on social networks. But in looking at my stats. I see others do. Which is a good thing. I have no idea what the quality of these sharing peoples social networks are. But I do find the traffic patterns interesting, where they go, where they came from and where the left from. Im not a tweeter and dont think Im going to be, Id be interested to here about twit traffic from others. I do get good traffic from facebook. I havent really set my stuuf up to track the traffic from social netwirks to really have a clear pic of the conversions or lack there of. But as I said the traffic patterns are interesting, other than the tire kicking crowd that is. I do personally find organic converts very well. But like I said I’m not really tracking converts from social networks. I do share other stuff I find myself and I havent really solicited other to do it. But Im not an attention getter and dont seek it really. I like to let it roll and let the content speak for itself.
Did I mention I got a dog? Yeah I did. nutty here now !!!
Have a good one dude

My honest answers:
- my natural submission to social networks is nearly zero. Although i use to signalize in comments or pm links that might be interesting to persons i care (like the Steve Pavlina posts the other day)
- i submit artificially my own posts to social networks. Up to now i’ve done that mainly with my italian niche blogs. I’ve done it also with my italian flagship blog, but lately i’ve discontinued that practice. I’ve to say tough that it brings in some decent amount of traffic, even after months.
- i very rarely ask for voting. I can count the times on one hand.

We are nearly on the same track. I really like blogging too.
I used to submit my own stuff and did not really get any returns. I have recently changed my strategy and started providing value in my social media profiles.
As I already read lots of stuff in my RSS, I take the time to send/rate the article in Stumble, Digg, Twitter as well. I keep it focused to my interests, and as in your case, my interests are very close to what I blog about.
I find this way working very well, and I regularly get in touch with new people who are interested in similar things as they like my stumbles etc, and this shows in the traffic I get as it is much more targeted than the usual social media traffic.
By the way, I’ve “discovered” your article in Stumble!
There are so many different ways of getting the word out in social networks that it can be overwhelming getting tons of voting requests. Usually if I like content, I’ll vote for it on my own. Odds are if I am friends with you, I’m already reading your content and voting/stumbling it, etc if I like it!
I used to stumble and digg some of my post when I first started, but I rarely do it anymore.
If I really like a post and it is easy to bookmark that post into a social network I will do it, but it has to be easily available because most of the time I will not go out of my way to do it.
I don’t do it often but I do it sometimes if the content really interests me and I think it needs to be shared. I do it more often if there is a button already there for me to click and share my vote on certain networks.
Not as much as i should, but that will change a lot in the new year.
For all those that share there own a lot and no one elses; stop. All you’re doing is looking like a spammer to others and will eventually be banned by certain networks.
I used to use delicious a lot, and then started saving some things in tumblr. A few months ago, however, I was at the Thin Air Summit and another delegate mentioned that as bloggers, we always want people to stumble or digg or forward our content.. yet in many cases we neglect to do it ourselves. That really was a wake-up call for me.
Now I use stumbleupon all the time, basically as my own bookmarking. I’ve had a few acquaintances tell me they’ve seen great traffic as a result of my stumbling their content, which is fantastic! So yes, I do it frequently, just as a nod to an author that I like their stuff.
Apart from Twitter and Blogengage I don’t bother to submit my own posts as I found most of these sites frown on it. I have all the links on my posts for those who would like to vote for me. It sort of means a lot more to me if someone actually voted because they liked the post and not because I asked them to.
