What a great video Garry! Very simple to understand and really useful information. Keep up the good work

Nice video Garry!
Fortunately you have already taught me how to make a profitable niche blog so there was nothing new in the video for me but this will DEFINITELY help anybody looking to make a niche site that WILL make money if they put effort into it.
It’s great to hear that you are going to be producing more videos as well. Video is huge right now and it really makes things a lot easier to understand and comprehend when something is trying to be explained.

Great walk-through Garry, this will help a lot of people. So this question may be better suited for bloggingquestions.com, but I’ll leave it here for now until I get registered there.
Let’s say that you managed to snag rainbowvacuumcleaner.com, rainbowvacuumcleaners.com, rainbow-vacuum-cleaner.com, and rainbow-vacuum-cleaners.com. Further, lets assume that “rainbow vacuum cleaner” is the keyword you are targetting, and that the number of competitive pages in Google is about equal whether there is a plural or not, but that there are more monthly searches for the phrase without the plural.
I am assuming that the best course of action is to setup one blog on the primary URL and redirect all of the others ones. Agree or no? (answer assumes I would only have time to develop content for one niche site).
So my question is, if I am going to setup a website on one of these URLs, which would you pick? Given that my targetted keyword doesn’t have a plural I am thinking it would have to be rainbowvacuumcleaner.com or rainbow-vacuum-cleaner.com.
Because the keyword phrase is long it certainly looks better with the hyphens. Is that the URL you would use?
Thanks for the feedback Garry.

Great post Garry! I am brand new to all of this blogging/MMO stuff and you have made me rethink what I have currently done. In the last month I have started 2 blogs(one about my journey into this MMO world and the other about small business marketing since that is where my day job fits) and after watching your video I am wondering if I should change my domain names before I get any traffic. I really like the way you determine how much you can write about and how to get more specific by using the adwords keywords. As a $10 self tutorial, I went ahead and bought rainbow-vacuum-cleaners.com. Thanks again and I can’t wait to learn more! I also joined bloggingquestions.com

Great video Garry!
This is exactly the kind of step by step information that I have been searching for. I look forward to more videos like these to help me in my journey.
One question I did have is you said something you mentioned in the video about a “black moon affect” (something like that) where your page will show up in google at first and then its like it vanished… what is the deal with this? I think one of my niche sites has done this and I have been trying everything I know (not much compared to a lot you) to get it back where it was and no dice!
Date/Time: 12-10-2008 00:00:42 Comment #27769
Hi BigKnoxy,
lol.. yes, sorry about that, I had said “Dark Side of The Moon”, which in other words I was meaning getting sandboxed in Google. I don’t know much about the processes of being sandboxed. Sometimes it happens and other times it doesn’t. But when it does happen, the blog usually ranks well in the SERPs after about two months.
The term, “Dark Side of The Moon” I believed was used back in the NASA Apollo days when the Apollo lost radio communications due to being on the back side “Dark Side” of the moon.

Dang Google… always has to one up me! Lol, that’s okay though as long as I’m good in the long run
And yes, now that you mention that I do remember that phrase “Dark Side of The Moon”, I think it has been in movies and such.
Once again thanks for video.

Brilliant video Gary.
I have been studying affiliate marketing since April, and went through the blackink project with Jeremy Palmer, and this video in quality, and quantity of information is just outstanding.
My understanding of keyword research in the sense of learning curve just went over the moon. I will watch this video several more times and take copious notes as well.
And to be honest, watching this just made up my mind finally to get into the game.
Look forwared to more videos.

Garry, in your video you mention having 50 or so articles and then set it and forget it. What do you do about comments? Do you turn them off or just not respond?
Date/Time: 12-10-2008 00:06:39 Comment #27770
Hi Scott,
Yes, “Drag, Drop, and Forget.”
I don’t do anything about comments because rarely do I get them. In fact, on many of my blogs I completely remove the comment template. Here is the thing about WordPress and blogs.
When I say that I create niche blogs, really though these aren’t blogs at all… these are sites.
A blog is like GarryConn.com or your blog, where people come and read posts and leave comments and interact with others within the site.
In the example shown in this video, this is not that kind of site. WordPress is actually classified as a “Content Management System”, CMS for short. It is a program that allows me to manage my content. WordPress doesn’t have to be used as a traditional blog, you can use if for anything you want. And that is one of the reasons why I like WordPress so much. I can build anything I want with it.

Hi Gary,
Fantastic Video Garry.
In your video, you point out using a url that has hyphens.
So could you please explain why you decided to go with “bloggingquestions.com” instead of “blogging-questions.com” ?
Date/Time: 12-10-2008 03:28:15 Comment #27776
Because I want that domain name to look pretty on a business card and also because that isn’t a “niche blog” for making money. It is a community blog where traffic is channeled by word of mouth.

You got a lot of helpful stuff over here for your peeps!
You were stressing me out typing each domain idea in one by one though. You should try bulk search man. I had to fast forward that part. lol. Just Buggin’!
I keep coming back here to jump on your ideas and grab a domain, but I didn’t want concrete curbing or vacuums. C’mon man, get some research done for me on music, design, etc. I’m waiting.
Cheers man

Hi Jay,
I am aware of bulk search tools, but that negates the purpose of the individualized attention I invest into choosing domain names that I could potentially end up keep for a very long time. I am very selective and consequently I do things very selectively.
I respect any system that people have created; however, plugging those domain names in “one by one” allows me time to think and strongly consider the names that I am researching.
Date/Time: 12-10-2008 10:16:46 Comment #27784
Garry;
You are the man. I just read this (Wednesday morning). Sorry for being late to the party. I like what you are doing here, and I think it is very helpful. I want to join in and help your readers by doing an example — but I don’t want to steal your domain names (I’ll leave those for people just getting started).
In support of your efforts here, I am building a blog at bestvaccumdeal.com tonight. I will blog about it and link back to your article. If you want, you can blog about my website (what you like and don’t like about it). We can do a back and forth for a while to help people get the idea and debate some issues like content creation, affiliate links, etc.
You up for that? I hope so, ’cause I already registered the domain name. LOL. I’ll have a rainbow category on the site so we can discuss the keyword research that you have already done.
By the way, I chose not to put Rainbow in the domain name because I want to put some ebay stuff on the site. Use of a trademark in a domain name is against eBays TOS (bummer) — so I went with a generic domain.
OK — so I will ping you when the site is up.
Once again, great job.
Regards,
Mark

John,
It sure helps to get a domain close to what you’re targeting. I own both rainbowvacuumcleaner.net and rainbowvacummcleaning.com.
I plan to use the latter to just push some links to the first. I’m current;y at the top of the second page on G, but will on the first page shortly

Great video, Garry! Very informative. I agree that it’s likely that many bloggers would fall into the trap of just focusing on their main keyword and not confirm they have other material to write about to sustain that blog.

Garry,
You mention that you use wordpress as a cms and not a blog. My question is: Do you post articles as pages or as posts? Don’t you want to write your articles as posts?
Date/Time: 12-10-2008 21:59:42 Comment #27817
Garry, that was great stuff. I’m even going to contribute because I want you to keep posting great stuff like this. I have to run an errand, but when I get back I’m heading over to PayPal. I hope others consider this as well.
A while back, I emailed you and Dave about this site and how the traffic and earnings were really high and then they tanked. Well I (for the most part) left it alone as you suggested. The traffic and earnings have been creeping back up.
So folks, build one and move on to the next. Keep that up.
I have also noticed that MSN can really send some early traffic and help with early earnings. Especially when the URL/Title/Description contain the targeted phrase. So consider that as well. You can get some good early traffic while it builds its age in Google.

Gary et al.,
Very nice video. A couple of things, instead of using godaddy to find your domain name, use psychicwhois.com, that’s a great free tool.
If you’ve visited my site, you’ll see that the only way my site is currently monetized is through eBay affiliates sales. Google and eBay are currently at war, just search for “Google eBay War” and you’ll see what I mean.
This drags my site down, although my meta header is optimized for this term >> “Rainbow Vacuum Cleaner”, Google is penalizing my site because it’s an eBay affiliate site.
There are some things I do to combat that and it’s put a youtube video in every post, this gives it a little more juice.
I need to step up my backlinks campaign but overall, this is not a niche I’m going to spend too much time on.
Most people searching for the term are people who are looking for more information on the company who makes them, Rexair.
They have probably been called on by a direct sales person, and are doing a little research online.
If they buy, hopefully they’ll buy used through my site

Wow! Thanks for giving me some meat to eat at such a late hour, 6am as I write this. This is actually the kind of stuff that makes me want to join a site. It was refreshing to watch and listen to a video from someone who is easy to understand, a great communicator and very genuine.
I will be subscribing to your blog as I fell you are giving very great value.
I have started building niche blogs and am having some success with affiliate marketing. For 2009 I plan to ramp it up big time so I have unsubbed to all the lists that don’t provide really good value on exactly what I want to do.
Yours will be the first that I sub to for the new year and my more focussed goals.
Thanks heaps
