Garry Conn Gets Cake And Eats It Too

This is a must read for all my readers… so don’t skim this post via your RSS reader. I want to talk about a few things in this post that will help you get a better understanding for the things I have been doing with this blog and my motivations.

I am sure that you have heard of the famous saying, “You can’t have your cake and eat it too”… and lately I have been wanting just that. I have my cake, which is my personal blog and I have been wanting to eat the cake too, which I compare that to monetizing it.

The problem in doing that is pretty simple. In order to effectively make money on a blog, you have design that blog in a way to heavily promotes out going clicks.

In other words, you have to depend on resources such as search engines, other sites by way of link exchanges or email lists, business cards, bill board ads, etc… to get traffic to your blog.

The goal is to get a lot of traffic to your blog. But in order to make money using your blog, you have to effectively SEND THIS HARD EARNED TRAFFIC AWAY from your blog and do it as quickly as possible.

This tactic is nothing new for me… I do it every day on many other blogs that are designed for that purpose. The challenge I have been faced with over the past few weeks is figuring out how to effectively make money online using my personal blog.

In doing so, I know I am putting a burden on my readers. Anyone that subscribes to my blog in RSS is getting blasted with tons of posts that are totally off topic. The last thing I want to do is cause readers to be subjected to having their RSS reader filled up with posts that are unrelated to things that interest them.

So, what is the solution? How can I effectively make money using my personal blog while NOT disturbing my readers? That has been the question I have been asking myself for a few weeks now. “How can Garry Conn have his cake AND eat it too?”

Guys and Gals, I have a solution and I am very pleased with it and I really believe you will be too. I can now effectively make money using my personal blog while not disturbing you (my readers). The solution was so simple, it blows my mind.

I started a second blog off my personal blog’s domain. Look closely at the screen shot below: [click on it for full size]

gcdc-deals

The circled area is NOT Google Adsense. This is my own internal ad block that promotes content within my new blog titled, Garry Conn’s Best Deals Online. Here is a screen shot of the actual blog: [click on it for full size]

gcdc-deals-shot

By launching a second blog within my personal blog’s domain name, I am now able to do what I really love to do (make money online) while at the same time do something else I really love to do (teach you how to make money online) while not disturbing your piece and flooding your RSS reader with content you don’t want to read.

By having the second blog I am able to write content that I really enjoy writing and not worry about force feeding this information to you. If you are a reader of my personal blog, you are subscribed to: http://feeds.feedburner.com/successful-blogging

What that means is that I can blog as much as I want on my new blog and not worry about loading you up with all that content, while at the same time I can still use my homepage to promote the content.

The big picture is this: Over the last few weeks, my content has changed a lot on GCDC. The reason being is that I wanted to make more money. In order to make more money, I need to write about things that allow me to generate money. Writing content that teaches people how to make money doesn’t make me money and that is why I started writing about other stuff.

Now having the new blog, I can comfortably go back to my old ways and write content that you really and truly want to read while also being able to do what I want to do at the same time which is write about things that allow me to make money.

Thus… Garry Conn gets the cake and eats it too! In the next few days, you will be happy to know that I am going to be toning things back on my blog. Much much less monetization, and more putting my content up front and in your face.

Yes… I will be somewhat re-designing the blog again too… The truth being said, this current design was built for the purpose of making money which goes hand in hand with the newer content that you have been reading on the blog.

This is all coming to an end and I am getting back on track! Thank you for being patient and sticking with me. I am in so much better of a mood now knowing that I can have my cake and eat it too!

Woah! You’ve been busy Garry and it sounds like you’ve come up with some great results, I’d been wishing I could do something similar with my blog, but didn’t want to alienate my RSS subscribers.

As a reader of your blog, I’m really pleased you’ve been able to come up with this solution as I love reading your regular content here on GCDC.

You must have had a really productive Christmas, hope you had a great time celebrating with yoru family too!

Oh yeah… everything has been going good man and yes, I am totally happy about launching a second blog that doesn’t interrupt what I do on the main site. :)

I hope your holidays have been well too! Talk to you soon.

May be I’m missing something, I’m still don’t getting the whole picture of your goal for THIS site. Is it to become the third alternative to Shoemoney and Chow or to monetize also this blog ?
What is different in your nested blog, to what you already do on blogtheinternet.com ?
Why replicate blogtheinternet hear on GCDC ? For the traffic you get here ?
Is your goal in adding the nested blog to monetize GCDC or to get new readers on your blog ?
Don’t you think the nested blog could have a bad influence on the relevance to MMO topics in the SERPs ?

Alex- you don’t see a difference between the two sites? GCDC is to teach us to make money, us as in his readers. Blogtheinternet.com is all about best deals online/offline.

May be I’m missing something…

You might be… you and I have had a rough road… you send me candy from Italy and then less than 24 hours later I learn that you steal my site design… I am over all that and forgive you etc… but its still weird.

I’m still don’t getting the whole picture of your goal for THIS site.

The purpose of the site is to teach others about how I make money online so that they can do what I do and maybe even better. The last week I have been torn between the issue of running a social blog that caters to my readers with trying to make money from it. This issue has been corrected by starting a second blog on my domain.

What is different in your nested blog, to what you already do on blogtheinternet.com ?

LOL!!! Volume baby… have a blog competition with me and see how well you keep up. I type faster than most seasoned secretaries sporting over 25 years experience. I blog so fast I wear out keyboards in a matter of weeks! Sometimes smoke comes off my fingers. :)

Why replicate blogtheinternet hear on GCDC ?

Hmm… I didn’t know I was doing that. Content on all my blogs are totally unique and written by hand either by myself or by my team of writers.

Is your goal in adding the nested blog to monetize GCDC or to get new readers on your blog ?

Dude… look at this screen shot and you answer the question:

Don’t you think the nested blog could have a bad influence on the relevance to MMO topics in the SERPs ?

If it was a bad influence, then why would I do it… I’ll tell you what is a bad influence and something that is a total mind screw for people who are trying to learn this business is this: http://www.45n5.com/top100/

I am not into doing all the fluff stuff… the content I write on GCDC all comes from the heart. I don’t promote things and treat my readers like dirt. I don’t trick people by recommending random products from ClickBank or other affiliate based products. I don’t trick people and recommend and suggest buying e-book scams. Long story short… I don’t waste your money and instead I try to teach you how to make money. I respect my readers and try to teach them to the point to where I even get conscious about trying to score some extra green by monetizing the site. When the year is done and when I am done being on “blog crunch time mode” I’ll be doing a quick fix on the GCDC.

Thanks for the comment. :)

@Eliza
i don’t see a difference between the nested blog on GCDC and blogtheinternet.com

haha, Alex what is it you don’t like Garry’s theme? Please tell me that isn’t the case as I remember just this past month there was an issue about you ummmm…”using” his theme on your own blog. I think Garry has found his niche and it works great for him, there is a huge difference in content on both sites. Actually if you look at BTI today or yesterday you can see he’s been letting everyone know about sales that are at the stores. Now you bounce back to GCDC and you find that Garry is trying to help his friends (readers) actually make some money. He’s frustrated at the moment because he’s been telling everyone how he made money since Thanksgiving and no one listened or if they did they didn’t blog. He had wanted to share in the joy with his readers. He wanted his community to grow. I can totally understand his frustration. However the issue on the videos he makes is he makes them (once again) for his readers to learn, not to become a professional podcaster or whatever it is called. He knows that yes videos bring in more traffic and while it helps put money in his pocket I think he wants to reach as many readers as possible. I really don’t think Garry is trying to be like John Chow, after all I haven’t seen many pictures of food. :) (Garry how about some McDonald’s photos?)

I guess I’m just trying to say is why don’t you actually LIKE GCDC or BTI? I’m sure Garry would love to know, and if anything he can learn what his readers think. I honestly think there’s a difference. Even in the layout. (ads)

I am so getting me a Double Cheeseburger for Micky D’s!!! You know, that would make from a great post on BTI… Its all about deals and scoring a Double Cheese Burger at McDonalds for only a $1.00 dollar is a hell of a deal in my book….

Well.. heck there I go again… sure enough I wrote a freaking post about McDonalds… I really need to see a doctor. Where is Tish??? She did a post last week about being a blog addict… where is the doctor I need one!!!

Best Cheese Burger Deals Are At McDonalds. LOL!!!! :)

Hi Garry you seem to me upset, i really don’t know why.
The point wasn’t the theme but questions about your decision to add a second nested blog “a la blogtheinternet.com” into GCDC.
Also Eliza seems to be upset, altough I’ve never said that i don’t like the theme (you remember well that I like it for sure).

I try to explain with other words what i think.
1. i believe that GCDC is about teaching how to MMO
2. the “new nested blog” (as i call it) is a blog with blurbs written for clickers with no related topics to MMO
3. for me a blog whith blurbs with deals is a blog “a la blogtheinternet.com” (Garry this doesn’t mean that these are the SAME posts, as on BTI).

Maybe now you can understand why i asked you my questions:

What is different in your nested blog, to what you already do on blogtheinternet.com ?

I supposed it is volume, but i wasn’t sure.

Why replicate blogtheinternet here on GCDC ?

As i explained, I meant “why do another blog with blurbs and deals just for clickers?” (not COPYING the same posts). The answer is apparently the same: volume.

Is your goal in adding the nested blog to monetize GCDC or to get new readers on your blog ?

I was just wondering if you thinked about the fact that someone could land on your site from Google just searching a deal on your nested blog and could find that there is a lot more: a MMO blog with tons of good hints. This could bring in more subscribers…

Don’t you think the nested blog could have a bad influence on the relevance to MMO topics in the SERPs ?

It was just a question, I asked you if you don’t think (or are afraid) that it COULD (i haven’t said that it DOES) hurt the relevance in SERP’s of your MMO posts as long as the deals posts have nothing to do with MMO.

I’ve re-read three times all the comments. Maybe the misunderstanding is in this point:

I (ALEX) intend with “the nested blog” the new little sub-blog inside GDCD (that with the blurbs about deals), you (GARRY and ELIZA) intended with “the nested blog” the whole GCDC site and not only the part regarding the blurbs about the deals.

Isn’t it so ?

Alex,

Honestly… I have no idea anymore what we are talking about. I am not upset with you… I have been up for about 36 hours straight and I need rest. My blog here at GCDC is for you to learn. My “nested blog” as you call it is for me to help people find great deals on things that I think are cool and worth purchasing… there really isn’t anything more to it.

The reason why I created the “nested blog” is so that I can keep that content seperate from the content that you and close to 500 other people subscribe to. If you find that you like the content on my “nested” blog I will be providing a feedburner URL for you to subscribe to that as well. :)

I’d like to think its smart… I value my readership and I would be sure to lose my readers if their Google Reader was bombed with posts they don’t want to read. By having the second and seperate blog I can do what I enjoy and also do what my readers enjoy and keep the two seperate. :)
