Google Adsense Is Sexy

Does Sex Really Sell? How Effective Is This Kind of Marketing? How many of you folks have Google Adsense running on your site? How many of you guys (and girls) have seen the 160×600 featured on the left here? It never ceases to amaze me how successful “Sex” sells. It’s everywhere you go. Beer commercials, computer commercials, most TV shows based their story plots around it. Seeing an image of a hot chick as a MyBlogLog avatar is very common. What amazes me is that this type of marketing works! Take MyBlogLog for instance using a “hot chick” avatar… if you investigate the total member count on these communities, they have skyrocketed. The funny part is the fact that these communities rarely are about sex, girls, and hot chicks. They use the avatars to reel in members. Once members click the avatar, they obviously know that the community isn’t about what they expected, yet… they continue to be a member and actually contribute and stay active with the community. Why? Because the write does a good job keeping them locked in. The hot chick is bait, and the content is the keeper! I don’t practice this type of marketing, but I am here to tell you, it’s pretty dang effective. To me though, I can’t sell out like that… I really can’t. But it is tempting! LOL!!

What are your thoughts on using sex as a method of marketing? I would enjoy to hear your thoughts. Does sex really sell? And how effective do you think is this type of marketing?

I think it’s about time Google got on board. And I think it’s also about time I put up a few skyscraper ad blocks ;)

If it improves my click through rates and is ethical and tasteful, I like it!

@ Thor,

Ha! Something tells me that you might have been due up for a good smack anyway!

@ Santaram,

No problem… no need for the added url in the message because your name already links to your home page. :)

It is good to see you doing the exchange on your site though… I can it has helped me a lot and I have met a lot of great friends.

Of course it sells — but only in the right context. I suspect that ad is actually more about the swimwear than the skin, as they’re probably trying to get women to drop by and shop rather then men to come by and ogle :-)

[...] pornographic in their AdSense and AdWords programs like the plague, is now accepting and displaying more “revealing” advertisements than ever [...]

I’m sold! What can I say – the picture in the post ensured I read the post!

Seriously, I have seen a lot those avatars you’re talking about on the community sites and I thought it must obviously be worth doing, but I’m trying to also resist the temptation…for the time being at least! ;)

11 Dim from Google AdSense Tips { 01.18.08 at 12:14 pm }

No matter if they are sexy or not – once a filthy bastard decides to kill your AdSense account – the danger is real..

One of my sites recently got 1st page in Google and MSN for a number of keywords. And this instantly triggered one “happy” day I saw about 5 times increase in AdSense clicks. I checked the hosting stats and saw that all clicks (over 500) have been generated from MSN search string where the keywords phrase is the same and first word in this phrase always starts with capital letter. When Google sees it – the problem.

So, my AdSense tip is – always check AdSense stats for unexpected jumps. If they happen – check your hosting stats. And for anything illegal contact Google AdSense team instantly to be pro-active.
