Google Chrome Scares The CHROME out of me…

Seriously, Google Chrome freaks me out. Google Chrome is now live and I just installed it and it is slow as hell. I am back using Firefox to write this post because Google Chrome is so slow. Here are my concerns about the web browser being slow.

For one, it really shouldn’t be slow to operate. I mean some web browsers are a little faster than others, but nothing has ever been slow like this.

Now with that said, here is what gets me suspicious. It is oblivious there is a ton of hype about Google Chrome. Early this morning, I wrote a blog post about it and it ended up and still it getting tons of traffic to it. More traffic than I ever seen before. I was averaging around 150 visits per MINUTE!

With that much demand, I could understand that downloading the file could possibly be slow. However, guess what? Downloading Google Chrome was very fast. Amazingly fast in fact.

So why is Google Chrome operating so slowly on my computer? Great questions, thanks for asking!

Here is what I think….

I think once you have Google Chrome installed on your computer this program is massively used to collect huge amounts of data about your surfing habits. I think that information get relayed back to Google and they keep it for their experimental mind freak research.

The browser shouldn’t be slow… and the reason why it is slow is because thousands of people are using it now and the data being sent to Google is coming at them faster than they thought they could process. The hold up isn’t the brower operating on your computer. The hold up is the browser waiting to transmit the data to their servers.

Is this proven… No. But this is my gut instinct. I really can’t wait for a story to surface where a hard core programmer has taken Google Chrome apart to unveil these findings.

Again.. I could be wrong, I am just a paranoid blogger, so what can you expect.

To Google’s benefit, the web browser indeed looks awesome! I would love to use it, I really would and I’ll try again later after my prozac kicks in.

HTML’wise and web design’wise everything looks great. WordPress blogs appear to look normal, web pages appear to look the way they should. So all in all, everything looks great and I am excited to be using something new. Sometimes, I get a little paranoid about what I think the future holds for the people who use Google.

Really? I’m using GC and have been since it was released several hours ago. I’m not noticing any slowdown, and most sites are loading much faster than with FF.

What setup are you running it on? I’m using Vista on a 2.0 ghz machine using an AMD Turion X2 processor, 3 gb of ram and a dsl connection around 2.5 mbps.

Hey Garry, That is strange, I have multiple instances opened and it is lightning fast, so much better than FireFox and IE, downside is missing all my plugins and bookmarks (from FireFox), but some of the new stuff is great to play with.

So far I like it, only time will tell. I am also more confident in Google listening to the user base than anybody else ever has. From a developer standpoint there is some great stuff tucked away in here.

~~ Prozac kicked it ~~

… Hi David, how are you today? I welcome you to my blog for fun, entertainment and brainwashing …

joking…

So yeah, I hear what you are saying, so I am wondering why it is operating so slowly on my computer then. Perhaps Google is out to get me and no one else. Wouldn’t be the first time you hear someone say that.

True that on the part where you’d rather have Google collect data over others… I feel you there.

But still, my install is operating very slowly. I’ll jump on another computer and install it and see what happens.

I think you’re being a little paranoid here. I doubt they’d put out an open source browser that would transmit back to big brother. And I’m not sure what you’re doing wrong, but this thing is faster than I’ve seen a browser in a while. I’m hoping to install something to make it slow down. Could just be the sites I visited though — Plurk, Digg, Twitter.

I must have a bad install then or something… I’ll try re-installing.

6 Garry Conn { 09.02.08 at 4:10 pm }

Very similar…

Windows Vista
Intel Core 2 Due T7500 @ 2.20Ghz
2046 MB Ram

Connection: Charter Communications
30.0 Mpbs download
2.8 Mpbs upload

I am re-installing it to see if it performs better. Something must be wrong internally.

Hi Garry,
I’m loving it for the last 3 hours & am finding it extremely fast.
With it being fully opensource, I doub’t Google are collecting any data except where you offer to provide it.
Mat Cutts has just written a post about the privacy issues also, worth a read.
From the last 3 hours usage, I’d love to make it my default browser but just can’t live without live bookmarks or the firefox web dev tools, hopefully soon…

9 Chris { 09.02.08 at 11:06 pm }

It’s very slow for me as well…AMD Turion 64 1.8GHZ 1 GB RAM…Not the fastest computer in the world…but the program runs WAY slower than Firefox and even IE…

Are you serious…

Chrome sending information “secretly” back to Google’s servers? Dude – it’s open source, so there’s no need for a “hard core programmer” to take it apart – http://code.google.com/chromium/

Chrome is the fastest and best browser available today by all means hands down.

11 Eddie { 09.02.08 at 11:47 pm }

Well, I am also suffering from horribly slow Google Chrome – and it’s a shame, as I love all things Google, and I think it has some pretty awesome features, but I just can’t be waiting for 30 seconds or so just to load a page. Hitting the same page in Firefox and GS simultaneously, Firefox opens the page in a second or two, and GS follows some 20 seconds later. I have reported it as a ‘bug’, and hopefully it will get resolved at some point, but in the meantime, it’s Firefox for me.

12 Ryan { 09.02.08 at 11:59 pm }

Chrome is loading incredibly slow for me too..

Did you find out how to fix it? I have no idea.

13 ITRushn { 09.03.08 at 12:34 am }

GC is super slow on my machine as well.
Sending request… or waiting for …. taking ages to complete.

Also while installing it, it didnt install for the first time. Download has constantly freezing mid way though.

14 Scott Mather { 09.03.08 at 1:21 am }

Also very very slow for me, compared to Firefox and IE.
Running XP sp2 on a 2 ghz machine with 2 gig memory. No reason it should be so glacial…what gives?

15 Warwick { 09.03.08 at 3:46 am }

You must be kidding, Google Chrome is awesome lightning fast, and low memory usage.

As for sending information back to Google on surfing habits etc, I doubt it I don’t think they would be that stupid.

I’m very impressed with it and am happily using it instead of FireFox now.

16 zaki mirza { 09.03.08 at 6:53 am }

proper crap! i have the chrome installed right now and i havnt seen a browser so blazing fast!

I mean, atleast try to be reasonable with your posts!

Hi,

I just stumbled across your post after looking for other people’s complaints about Google Chrome. I did some tests using Webslug which compares site performance and found that Chrome is really slow on an empty cache load but catches up to Firefox once it has a full cache.

You can read more about it at my blog http://greenerdesktop.com/20/chrome-is-slower-than-firefox

18 Owen { 09.03.08 at 7:27 am }

Take your tin foil hat off Garry.

They don’t need to send data back to their servers, they already have logs of your surfing habits. If you installed the Google toolbar this does send some data back to Google, but I’ve yet to inspect the packets, just seen the headers. Haven’t tried chrome yet, but it seems like a very interesting concept.

19 soulfury { 09.03.08 at 8:21 am }

Nice troll, Garry. I appreciate your creativity. I should make a blog similar to yours. As of this writing, your blog is now #1 on “firefox vs chrome” search term. Nice SEO technique! =)

20 Sire { 09.03.08 at 8:51 am }

Gary, maybe it has something to do with being in the States. I hear that Christine S had the same problem I on the other hand found it exceptionally fast, especially when I had multiple tabs open.

Maybe Google is sending a little more luv DownUnder for a change.

21 jeep { 09.03.08 at 9:13 am }

Yep, it’s slow as hell!

Whenever there is a flash program on the page, it completely freezes for several seconds, and not just at the beginning, but it keeps doing it periodically.

And that freezes the whole browser, not just one tab, so since I visit a lot of sites with for example flash games, the browser is completely useless to me.

22 David Cooley { 09.03.08 at 9:33 am }

Suggestion: If your installation is running real slow it may be very easy to find out if it is a particular tab and what is causing the problem. I just posted about watching the processes with Sysinternals on my site. Compared to watching a program that does not allow you to see each site/tab that is loaded, doing this with Chrome makes it obvious where the problem is.

Check out David Cooley’s last blog post..Pay Just What You Want for Programming Help

24 jeep { 09.03.08 at 9:54 am }

The problem is obviosly Chrome itself, since no other browser hangs like this with flash applications

25 Owen { 09.03.08 at 9:54 am }

I wrote troll?

The only reference I can think of is the tin foil hat and I intended that in the paranoid way.

26 Garry Conn { 09.03.08 at 9:55 am }

Now that indeed makes sense… I’ll read your article. Thanks!

** Still slow for me, I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice. There are some other things glitchy with the install. For example, I can’t make Google Chrome my default browser, I can click the button, but nothing happens.

27 David Cooley { 09.03.08 at 10:00 am }

Well it can not be an absolute problem with Flash, or everyone would have it, right?

If you look at your processes, you may see something that jumps out at you, especially if you sort the results by CPU usage.

Just trying to help.

Chrome sending information “secretly” back to Google’s servers? Dude – it’s open source, so there’s no need for a “hard core programmer” to take it apart – http://code.google.com/chromium/

And – of course – you did compile and build your own Google Chrome yourself, right…?

And then, even if you did: http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~ganger/712.fall02/papers/p761-thompson.pdf

30 Scott Mather { 09.03.08 at 5:03 pm }

I had the same problem. But after uninstalling, I reinstalled differently in that I allowed everything through my firewall that it asked for, AND marked each instance to allow firewall access in the future.
Now it runs like a top. Very fast. Very impressive. Love at first, well second use.
So..perhaps something to do with your firewall??
Or, what if you were to install while windows was in safe mode?

31 Jarret { 09.03.08 at 7:22 pm }

It seems as though some are having quite a difficult time with Chrome while others are not having any problems.

Lucky enough for me I have had no problems as of yet and I am really enjoying Chrome albeit a few features and 1 toolbar that I have installed on FireFox.

I wrote up a quick post about it and the one thing that I wish that I could have right now with Chrome is the Web Developer Toolbar.

32 dave { 09.03.08 at 8:30 pm }

well after over 24 hours of using chrome, i’m still loving it.
Garry, could your issues be due to downloading & installing at the same time as probably millions of others? I seriously have had no issues & love the speed increases.
I’d still love to make it my default browser but just cant live without live bookmarks, firebug & the web developer extensions.
Then again if Google adds these to chrome, maybe I’ll be back to my old firefox speeds, will have to wait & see…
Have you tried installing it since your issues yesterday? if so, did it make any difference for you?
Dave.

Ok fine… LOL My master plan conspiracy theory is done. My wife just installed it on her piece of shit laptop that is on it’s last leg and it works like a charm. As David and others have mentioned, something must be jacking with it installed on my computer.

Seriously, my wife’s computer is slower than elephant shit being flushed down the toilet.

So, I am wrong… Google isn’t out to get me. lol!

34 dave { 09.03.08 at 9:13 pm }

My kids are also using it on their elephant flushing laptop & no complaints so far, although it’s been only a few hours for them…
But I’m happy, might save me another few months of ‘we need a new computer dad’ i hope…
And they use it on a lot heavier flash/video sites than i would ever use…

Oh it amazes me what the kids and the wife included will do with a computer. It makes me cringe… lol!

Something new that I noticed is that everytime I try to load a site, the top left of the browser where you can see the activities of the browser, it shows “Resolving proxy”….that I never see in FF before. Maybe that is a cause (of concern?)…
Any ideas guys?

37 jeep { 09.04.08 at 7:25 am }

Like I said, it’s a problem with Chrome, not flash, since the problem doesn’t occur in any other browser.

38 jeep { 09.04.08 at 7:28 am }

It is missing the icon in the upper left corner. I always use that to close programs, by double clicking it, rather than clicking the x in the upper right.

39 Fuad { 09.04.08 at 9:26 am }

Sorry, I meant bottom left of the browser.

Something new that I noticed is that everytime I try to load a site, the bottom [top] left of the browser where you can see the activities of the browser, it shows “Resolving proxy”….that I never see in FF before. Maybe that is a cause (of concern?)…

40 Garry Conn { 09.04.08 at 11:29 am }

I don’t know what is wrong with my computer. I tried and tried to install it and it is buggy as hell. Yet too, when my wife installed in on your really SLOW computer, it was lightening fast… Google Chrome looks awesome, I just wish I could get it loaded on my computer. Something is conflicting on my PC.

41 Kazum { 09.05.08 at 2:13 pm }

I know whats wrong with your browser that is slowing it down

When you install it make sure you disable the “Help Google make the browser by transmitting data” blah blah.

This slows down the browser and will continually tell Google what you are doing, If you want to free up that up then uninstall and install it again

This time make sure NOTHING is mark, just install it without anything.

Google Chrome is the fastest browser I ever used and is light and simple. I was spectical at first but once I got it working I was amazed

42 Doug { 09.05.08 at 9:59 pm }

To fix the resolving proxy problem, disable the service ‘WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery’. The in-process proxy processor seems better then the out of process, see below.

What is WinHTTP Auto proxy service

This service implements the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) protocol for Windows HTTP Services (WinHTTP). WPAD is a protocol to enable an HTTP client to automatically discover a proxy configuration. If this service is stopped or disabled, the WPAD protocol will be executed within the HTTP client’s process instead of an external service process; there would be no loss of functionality as a result.

43 ssxm { 09.06.08 at 6:11 am }

Hmm, it looks like it’s time to re-write the original blog article. There is enough evidence that Chrome performance is somehow related to the install routine, and when installed properly it is lightning fast. The original article is just unfair bashing.

44 Fuad { 09.06.08 at 11:03 pm }

HELLO!!!!!!!!
YES!!! My Google Chrome is now FAST. Thanks Doug (in this forum) and Edward Tian (in http://forums.techarena.in/small-business-server/392885.htm) for the advice.
In simple steps:
1. Start>right click on My Computer>click Manage
2. In Computer Management, expand Services and Management
3. click Services>then find WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service and double-click it
4. On its General tab, drop down the Startup Type>Disable it

Then either re-install Google Chrome or try restarting your PC
It works for my PC with Vista 32-bit.

Thanks all.

45 Mike B { 09.11.08 at 10:37 am }

Hah – you don’t believe it sends anything back to Google, you are up for a surprise and Google is not even hiding it – just try reinstalling it – see the checkbox option to send or not to send your browsing habits to Google in order to “make it better”.
As for the being slow – hell yes it is slow on my PC
Vista Ultimate 64
8 gig of Ram
quad core 3.0 GHz

pretty powerful – so it is not the machine resources – it is the pipe that is being boged down by feeding the “big brother”

Although – I really like it and would love to use it vs. FF or IE – when it works!
Mike

Amazing! on firefox 3 it takes me around 30 seconds to load and log on facebook. with chrome it took……………………………………………………………………………………………

47 MINUTES! THIS WEB BROWSER IS RUBBISH! I went on firefox 3 again and its fast so its not my internet speed

47 MikeB { 09.15.08 at 11:16 am }

one should not disable services on PC left and right just because Chrome doesn’t like it, especially where all other browsers work just fine.

It should just work without any mods to your system default settings – remember this is suppose to be easy to use and not to have us customize settings. Read Google’s 10 rules for the interfaces.
I’m sure it is a good browser – just needs some tweaks as any beta version.

48 film fan { 09.16.08 at 6:19 am }

i keep learning about more and more little advantages and features with Chrome, with privacy, for example; now if only they would take care of it’s cookie management glitches…

49 Rawr { 09.28.08 at 10:14 pm }

Personally, it is open source, anyone could easily take a peek. Google always has a do no evil policy as far as I have heard, they make great web applications, I have seen talks by their founder, he sounds really like a fighter for the better good. The way he was talking about the FCC and his drive to better communications for wifi using whistespace and the like. I am paranoid too, but so are a lot of people I know who are programmers. They have gone through GC and they love it, I trust their judgment, and following the aftermath of GC release, I am trying it out for the first time.

50 TC { 11.15.08 at 3:33 pm }

very slow for me too. I’ve just started searching around for info on it and your blog is the first one I found. must keep looking.

51 Dimitrios { 11.17.08 at 4:26 pm }

For some of you the problem could be google accelerator…I had this installed for use in Firefox and EXplorer and it totally mucks up Chrome, it was very very slow and didn’t work very well.

I uninstalled Accelerator and Chrome is lighting fast.

Hope this helps some of you.

52 Vivek Nair { 05.14.09 at 2:24 am }

First of all Google Chrome is not slow when you are using a few tabs (1-7tabs) on the contrary its faster than most of the browsers. They are using FireFox shell which explains its efficiency.

Google is know for its efficiency,speed and easy to use capabilities.

About google collecting information — Its True but you might also want to know that they have been doing this from quiet sometime now-They call it Google Trends. Each time you type in queries into their console on Google.com its recorded with you IP,Country,Time,Date (They also know whose watching how much porn). They have a record – at one time the US government forced them to release that information to find out pedophiles on the Net but Google fought off the government in the SC. Google chrome is the another way of collecting that data after Google toolbar, This information that they are collecting is worth billions of $$. With Google chrome they are giving out feelers to Microsoft as they in Development of a Full Fledged OS using the Linux Kernel so Microsoft is trying to Push Windows 7 before they do it for free.

Only time will tell
