Gtalk App For iPhone

with 3 comments

Want to chat with your Gtalk friends using your iPhone? Unfortunately, doing so might not be as easy as you think.

It has been about a month since I last used an instant messenger. The reason is because I have simply been way too busy and when I did chat, I never seemed to get any work done.

However, now that I have my iPhone, I was curious to see what kind of apps were available. As it turns out, there isn’t much at all, and to be honest, I am quite disappointed in Google.

From the best of my knowledge – and please correct me in the comments if I am wrong but the only Gtalk app available comes direct from Google, but it’s not really even an app. It’s more so just a loader that opens up the web based version of Gtalk in your iPhone Safari web browser.

In my opinion, if I wanted to load up the web based version in my web browser, I would do just that. I don’t understand why Google couldn’t have created something nicer. One of the things I don’t like about it is that I have to close the current page to do something else on Safari.

I really hope that there is an alternative app available, perhaps an all in one (i.e. YIM, AOL, MSN, and Gtalk). If you know of something else, drop a comment and let us know.

  1. Garry,

This is by far the finest instant messaging app for iPhone: Beejive at http://www.beejive.com/iphone/

It supports all the popular IM networks, including GTalk. It may be considered pricey for an iPhone application, but I find it worth EVERY penny. It has its own server back-end that keeps you online, even if the app is not running, and stores your incoming IMs. It’ll even push IMs to your email or SMS.

I highly recommend this one, it’s very well designed and is extremely solid.

  2. I am also not too much impressed with the Gtalk application in iPhones. Google, maybe, is not too keen on venturing into mobile communication just yet (are they too busy analyzing the threat posed by Bing :p )

  3. Would it be better if you blocked out your contacts’ e-mails?

Anyways, this APP looks nice, but I usually favor over the ALL-IN-ONE apps :)
