How Do I Redirect A Domain Name To A Different URL

with 5 comments

Recently I purchased the domain name OrderHostGator.com so that I could use it to automatically redirect to my affiliate referral URL of http://secure.hostgator.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=garryconn. In the next few weeks there’s going to be quite a bit of changes going on with my blog (I am sure many of you gals and guys can already sense that) a lot of that will tie into the new home office that is being built. Almost done too! But anyway, my friend Mark Sierra sent me an email today asking me a question about how you can redirect a URL (such as a domain name) and point it to another URL. Here is a copy of the email.

Hey Garry,

Very timely that you send this.

I’d like to know how to redirect one URL to another one. I just registered a domain name and pointed it to my host. When this domain name is entered or clicked, I want to redirect it to an entirely different URL.

If you have a moment to answer this, that would be very helpful.

Thanks,
Mark

I am sure that there are many ways to redirect a domain name to another URL. Recently I did this very easily on NameCheap.com. I am sure other places such as GoDaddy.com offer this service, but doing it in NameCheap.com was simple. All you have to do is log into your NameCheap.com account, click on manage account, manage domains, and then select the domain name you want to manage. From there simply click on URL Forwarding.

After you do that, simply follow the remaining instructions and proceed to complete your URL forwarding request. After that, you will soon be able to use your domain name to automatically redirect to any URL you want.

  1. Thanks, Garry. I always thought it was more complicated than that and required some code. Good to know. :)

  2. Actually its really the quickest way… but i still do prefer the php redirect from the index.php as i think its more flexible..

  3. I tried this a few days ago with two sites and it did forward to the correct domain that I wanted it to but it left the wrong url up in the address bar.

A friend told me I had to do something about making sure it was not masked, but I have not figured it out yet. Too busy.

  4. There are some amateur internet marketers that think about renting domain names for promoting their sites. Well honestly it’s a bad plan but it also can be a good business idea.

  5. garry when i log into my namecheap account and select one of my domains, there isnt the option of URL forwarding in my menu the way it is in your photo, wonder why that is?
