How Do You Feel About Google And Their PageRank System?
Every time Google updates PageRank bloggers get more and more angry with the results. Progressively, this trend is spiraling downward in the wrong direction. Some bloggers “Get It” but many bloggers don’t. Many bloggers have suffered some huge PageRank losses with the Oct. 07 PageRank update. To me, this doesn’t come as a surprise. However, for many of the bloggers out there who have taken hits in their PageRank, they act as if it is a surprise.
Google, Inc. provides a wonderful and “FREE” service to authors, bloggers, contributors, publishers and webmasters who want to take advantage of it. Literally, Google has a system in place that can send you thousands and thousands of visitors to your site for free. It doesn’t cost you a dime!
In return, Google holds you and your site accountable for falling within a standard or a guideline. For those who willingly choose to not follow and or even read their policy, Google will make adjustments to your account in their database. It’s their search engine, it’s their rules…. long story short: If you value Google and the free traffic that they can give you, it should be in your best interest to read and follow their rules.
If you could care less about Google and scoring free traffic, that is fine too! There is nothing wrong with making a choice and choosing not to take part in Google and their free traffic program. However, if you don’t care… then don’t complain.
Google provides my blog with “Free” traffic. Many of my readers may feel that I am just rolling in the cash. Yes, I make money online… and at times, I make “REAL GOOD” money. But this is my job and its no different that being a local mechanic or a carpenter. I don’t have the income to spend thousands of dollars on monthly advertising. When there are people out there that do have money and pay for something that I have personally worked hard to achieve for free… I feel that is cheating and so does Google. Cheaters who try to cheat the system by using Text-Link-Ads and other similar programs cause the hard working and honest bloggers to suffer. Instead of robbing from the rich and giving to the poor, its the other way around. The moment people come to understand this is when I think the huge wave of negativity against Google will cease. Google is here to protect the common and average blogger and provide an amazing a free way to get traffic to your blog.
Globally, I am concerned. I am concerned for the bloggers out here in the blogosphere who personally do care about their PageRank but continue to participate in the many programs that Google says are bad. I am concerned with the message that is being spilled out on the Internet for the beginning bloggers who are first starting. First impressions mean everything, and I really feel that these rants and complaints about Google and their free search engine are misleading to new coming bloggers.
David Cooley and I have started a new Internet radio talk show called, RadioBlogTalk.com. Together, we are going to broadcast a new show once a week. Our goal is to air the show every Monday morning. I want to invite you over to RadioBlogTalk.com and check out our first discussion about Google PageRank and the Blogosphere reaction.
Comments can be directed here or directly on our YouTube channel. We both look forward to talking with you more about the huge and controversial debate and discussion about Google and their PageRank system.

I didn’t realize PayPerPost was no good either. But I guess now that I think about it they are sort of like TLA. How then is a blogger supposed to make money? Only the occasional affiliate sale and Adsense? Any ideas?
I think the major reason that people get upset with Google whenever there is a PageRank update because more and more people believe that they know how it works and try to game the system instead of just trying to build a good website with great content, as long as you do that you can’t go wrong.
What a great team-up guys! Good job! I’ll definitely keep an eye on this one.
Michael,
Thanks for the comment. You are right man… people do try to game the system. A most interesting post I read today comes from a guest blogger that popped in on JohnChow.com yesterday. This post is a prime example of garbage. The author’s name is Jamie Harrop and he writes nothing but a two bit worthless rant that isn’t even spell checked about Google being outdated and based off an old technology that isn’t up to speed with current standards. This shit amazes me. The stupid crap people come up with to twist things around.
My Question For All The PageRank Haters Is This…
What do you have your home page set to? What search engine do you use to find things? Does your email addy have a five letter domain name that starts with the letter G?
When someone comes and spams your blog with worthless comments, do you approve them? What about all those nasty sex and porn trackbacks from blogs that steal your content?
Do you go live with these comments? No… so why do people expect Google to just allow others to take advantage of their systems and the people that follow suit with their rules? You wouldn’t allow trash into your own blog, so why do you expect Google to allow links into their database from people who are cheating their way to the top within a system that clearly has rules on how to get to the top the right way? This is no different than cheating in any common board game played among friends.
DayJobNuker,
Sorry man.. your post went into moderation… so I didn’t mean to make it look like I ignored your comment… here are my thoughts:
There are tons of ways to make money online and I have tons of ideas. In my last post, I asked the community what would be some things that they would like me to write about. One of the topics requested was just that: How To Make Money Online. I am pleased and totally able to write about this and will help many do this.
I totally appreciate you asking this question. So many people are wrapped up in this debate about PageRank. It’s like so many people feel its the only way to score green. Where in reality, TLA, ReviewMe, PPP, etc… are just only a fraction of the ways you can make money online.
You said the occasional affiliate sale? Why do you say occasional? If you launch a website that targets a niche and provides products for them to buy, you can easily make a complete living from doing that. Are you going to retire early doing the same thing on DayJobNuker? No… Why? Because you target people just like yourself… people who want to break away from their day job, people who want to make money online just like yourself.
Do you like horses? Great… launch a horse health and support site and write about all the wonderful products a horse owner needs to keep a strong and healty horse.
Do you like woodworking? Even better… use YouTube to film presentations of all the various crafts you build in your workshop and then offer your readers ebooks on how to do the same thing. Better yet, offer them great discounts on the same tools (saws, hammers, nails, etc) that you used to make your woodworking crafts.
People are so hung up on PageRank it’s crazy… there is NO difference between running a business online compared to brick and mortar. Well, yes… there is on BIG difference… ZERO overhead. ZERO rent and you have many places where you can advertise and promote your business for free!
@ Mark,
Sorry dude… you posted your comment as I was responding to Michael. I am totally happy that you will be watching our show. David will also be pleased to discover this.

If my readers want me to talk more about some cool ways to make money online, I can totally do that! I have so many wonderful and creative ideas that I would love to share with you all. I am ready to rock! are you ready to roll?
Let’s make money!
PS… take a look at this blog. This guy truly “Gets It” and more blogs I see like this one, the better.
Gary,
I understand what you said and have read you say that about starting in another, more profitable, niche many times. The big problem is finding that nich and being able to add content on a constant basis. You love aircraft and probably other things and are lucky.
I am not so lucky. There is no other area that I could keep coming back to time and time again that I know anything about. There just isn’t. If you pick an area, like golf for example, you REALLY have to love it and want to keep writing about it. Man, that is hard, hard work if you don’t absolutely LOVE it.
I know I will not be able to quit my dayjob with DayJobNuker.com but I would like to not give up and make as much as possible with it while I think of new gameplans. I love making money and I have tried to be inventive making money all my life and that is why I can keep coming back to it. I do make affiliate sales off my blog but they are “occasional” and thus the use of that word.
Thanks for taking so much time to always respond and I have a post coming out this week that will link to two of your articles.
Hey Garry I really enjoyed the talk show! Its great
I do agree that if you expect to get a good pagerank you have to comply, but I also blame Google for allowing a big debate to start over it.
Actually Google has rised up my pagerank very nice. But frequency of PR update is really low.
@ Matt,
I think that a site would need to be in compliance with their TOS prior to feeling they have been shafted. It’s hard for me to provide support and sympathy for a blogger who feels that they have been used and abused by Google if they don’t operate a blog or site that follows their basic guidelines.
Talk to me more about you blaming Google allowing this big debate. How could could they prevent this from happening? Bloggers are pissed and they are ranting. What could Google have done to prevent that?
Talk to you soon buddy and thanks for dropping the comment.:)
@ Symbian,
I am not sure why it took such a long time for PR to update this time around. I think it’ll be like Dec of 2022 before we get the next. lol!!!

@ DayJobNuker,
Man… I feel your pain dude. But, lets take a minute to think about this. I totally understand where you are coming from as far as not having much of an interest in other niche markets. That’s fine… and I have a simple solution for you: Guest Blogging. If you build a community driven blog, you will attract people who do have a love and a passion for this niche and they will be more than willing to write for you. Even more willing when you offer up some profit sharing options, or simply allow them to post some of their own affiliate based products. You can easily just sit back in your DayJobNuker Recliner and refresh your page and see new content being written on your blog hour on the hour.
@DayJobNuker:
Blog About Your Blog is an excellent example. Matthew (the owner) has created a great community over there, and with so many contributing authors there, there’s bound to be something for everyone.
Good call Mark…
Matthew’s site is an excellent example of a community driven blog. Imagine a blog like that but with a focus on a highly concentrated niche market such as watches, hunting, photography, etc…
Hi Garry
For the record, I don’t hate PageRank, in fact, I love it to death!
When I did a PR check, my 2 month old domain returned as “PR N/Aâ€Â.
What does “PR N/A†means? I’m not even sure if it’s equal to a big fat ZERO! Could it be due to it being a .net domain instead of .com?
You know how I feel? It’s like not being invited to the biggest and most anticipated party of the year!
@betshopboy
PR N/A or unranked just means that the page has not been ranked yet. For instance, the page that holds this post also has an unranked status. Why you would have this rank is unclear because you’ve got a lot of links so you should have at least some PR.
It certainly does not have to do with it being a .net domain name. We have .net domain name with PR 4.
If pressed for an explanation I’d go for the age of the domain and insufficient data on Google’s part.
And don’t worry, the next party will be similar or even bigger and better
Hi Garry,
I agree totally with your stance on Google. If you want it to work for you, you need to stay within the guidelines. If you try to game the system, don’t be surprised if the system games you right back!
On a different, but slightly similar note: as you wrote in an earlier post, you should not rely on Google entirely. This is especially important for blogs because the social aspect is a lot more important there. If you want more visitors to your blog you need to be out there , pull them to your blog and then keep them there with great content. It’s great to get a lot of visitors through Google but if they don’t convert into customers, advert clickers or whatever the reason is that you want them on your site, they’re useless.
Just curious: you do a very good job with converting people into repeat visitors (as anyone can see from the comments), but do they also convert into what makes you money? Exposure alone probably doesn’t do it for your advertisers.
Page Rank is really something that hasn’t effected me all. I get lots of search engine traffic for things that have nothing to do with my blog
Now that I have a decent PR, I’m trying to figure out how best to exploit it
