How Many Button Banner Ads Does It Take To Screw In A Light Bulb?
I just find this very entertaining, enough so for me to actually waste about ten minutes of my life to write about it on my blog. What the hell is up with 125×125 button banner ads on blogs? They are a sickness, a disease, they’re Satan in a digital dot Com form. LOL!!! Seriously, it was just last month where I fell into the trap and had them all over my blog like it was going out of style. I caught myself though… I was looking into the light and said, “Dude… don’t look into the button banner ad light!”
Anyway, I might sound like I am joking and I obviously sound like I am writing this in fun and in good nature; but I am serious! What the hell is going on with 125×125 button banner ads. First off, these things were way popular in the mid 90’s and some how they have creeped back into style again, which is fine! There is nothing wrong with the actual 125×125 button banner.
But the problem is not in the banner itself but it how much it is being used. It’s almost like crack or some other widely abused drug. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new show appear on A&E called Bannervention. I have seen blogs start to use these buttons, taking up a little bit of space on their sidebar… usually it would be typical to see only one button per row.
Today’s blogs are much different. I am seeing blogs proudly displaying their 125×125 button banner ads three wide which takes up a minimum of 325 pixels of space, assuming there is no additional CSS margins, padding or spacing involved. Heck, it is evident that new WordPress themes are being created just for the purpose of displaying these little square crack rock jewels.
So what’s next? We started with single wide… it wasn’t long after, bloggers decided to upgrade and live the white trash trailer life and live it up “Double Wide” and now I am starting to see blogs going “Triple Wide”, so what’s next… are we going to eventually make our sidebars wider than our web page body column?
What are your thoughts? Are sidebar advertisements getting a little bit out of control? Are you really making any freaking money with them? Do you think that the 125×125 button banner ads are getting out of control? Drop me a comment with your thoughts either way… I wan to hear what you have to say about this one for sure!
BTW: This is my last post until I get back from Disney World on March 3rd. Play nice… drop me tons of comments and I’ll see you all when I return. You can call and leave me a voice mail at 931-368-4120 with any questions for my blog. When I get back I’ll answer your questions live on my blog.

I noticed that there are a lot of the new theme releases that are pre-made with these ads in mind. Personally, I don’t have them on my sites. It’s just a personal choice. One or two wouldn’t be bad, but I do think some sites are going a little overboard with them.
As far as being a distraction, it’s not an issue for me. I guess I’ve just figured out a way to tune them out, kinda like I do my hubby. LOLOLOL
In my opinion, I think if a site’s using them to simply advertise various products, then I’m not even interested. But, if a site’s using them as a way for other sites to get some publicity, then what the heck.

Hey have fun in DL.
I think they have a place and it’s the convenience of it all but it would be cool to start changing the sizes and having a newspaper style pricing system.
I don’t think I could sell any ads on my site right now as don’t get huge amounts of traffic but I was considering offering the 125size. I may now make it different and offer the design of these ads for free.

Have fun at Disney world
As for the 125×125 ads, I was also thinking the same when I was planning the opening of my blog. I started with 100×100 ads I think, but I ended up going to 125×125 ads because everyone is doing it and if I don’t follow, I lose.

Hey, all the big bloggers are doing it. It must be cool and profitable, right?
I always thought is was part of that Web2.0 look everyone is talking about.
While I don’t really understand why everyone is doing it, it is an efficient way of showing more ads above the fold.
It doesn’t really bother me, I just tend to ignore them most of the time just like other ads.
I really wish I were in Florida right now.

Florida was awesome! I’d like to live at Disney World. I think their events, music and shows are subliminal though.
