How Much Do You Tip Your Waitress?
So I am always curious as to what the magical formula is with tipping your waitress. How much money do you tip your waitress? What conditions have to be met in order for your waitress to get a good tip? What elements have to happen in order for your waitress to not receive a nice tip?
For me, I tip high. I think I tip higher than the average person. I understand that this is a very difficult job and many people treat their waitress like shit. So when I receive great service, I usually tip a little higher to compensate for the last person who was a total jerk to the waitress.
Really though, I am very low maintenace when I am at a table. The only thing I want is good tasting food (which falls outside from the responsibility of the waitress) and I want my drink to constantly stay filled.
Also, to help with being proactive most restaruants provide free re-fills, so I always order one drink plus a re-fill in advanced so that it is less work that the waitress has to do.
If my food is not hot, that may fall under that category of being the waitresses fault as my food must have sat under the heat lamp a little too long.
That’s about it. I just want a friendly smile, hot food and my drink constantly re-filled. If those conditions are met, then don’t be surprised to see a $10 to $20 dollar tip on a $50 to $75 dollar bill.
So, how much do you tip and what is your little magic formula used to calculate the amount?

It depends on the service and how well the waitress/waiter performed their job.
Usually though I will tip more what is necessary or more then the average person might tip. Just because like you said, they have a hard job and I know that I would fail if I even tried to do what they do.
And if it is a waitress and she is hot…..well then maybe an extra $1-$3 might land on the table

I usually add up the taxes and tip her that much. If Im out with my girlfriend.
How ever If I am out with the boys on a tear then….. well we have another tipping scale we go by. Its taxes + breast size + likely hood of getting laid by her. Ok thats my buddys marks scale, and well hes single, but it seems to work for us.
Odd thing is we get great “service”

For us married folks, Shane’s formula would get us in trouble. I will tip 20%, sometimes a little higher on big checks (if service is good). I’ll tip much lower if it isn’t.
When my wife and go out for desert, I will leave a bigger percentage tip since the normal 20% wouldn’t amount to much. I also tip my Starbucks on 31 Flavors a little.
