How Much Faster Do You Drive Over The Speed Limit?

So no one drives the speed limit, right?  Well, I don’t and you would be telling me a bold face lie if you said that you did. So, with that said we can all share unity here that we drive faster than the posted speed limit. So how far do you push it?

Granted, if you drive 1 MPH over the speed limit a cop isn’t going to pull you over. So what about 5 MPH over, what about 10 MPH? How far do you push the envelope when it comes to speeding and driving faster than the posted speed limit?

What about radar detectors, do you use them? I am from Tennessee and have called them “Fuzz Busters” since I was a kid. What kind of radar detector do you have? Does it work? Has your radar detector saved your ass from getting a ticket? I’d say that if a radar detector spared you from a ticket then the money you invested into purchasing it would totally be a pay off.

If you get a ticket, that costs money, also getting a ticket raises your insurance rates. Some States let you go to traffic school to prevent the ticket from being reported to your insurance. That is all fine and dandy; however, time too is money and the time invested into traffic school could very well be used for something else.

How much faster do you drive over the speed limit, and what is your formula and theory behind your speedy madness?

approx 10mph over the limit at all times – anything more is too risky…

if i was a cop at i saw someone doing 50 in a 40 zone i’d probably let it slide… i’d be after the guys doing 60/70.

there’s also a pretty good chance you’ll see a cop car parked up and have a chance to slow down, so assuming you do 10mph per the limit, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll slow down to under 100 by the time your speed registers ;-)

I have heard from others that it seems like a cop won’t pull you over for anything over 15mph over the speed limit typically. Although I have never officially tested this out and I’m not sure anybody could.

I guess you would have to survey a wide group of cops and ask them what they would do.

Though I usually keep it within 5-10mph over the speed limit depending on the speed limit. Some of the highways here in California are set at 65mph in which I will hover around 75 and some are set at 70mph but I still hang around 75. If I had a better car I would probably bump it up to 80 just because it is a lot easier to go faster in a car that is meant to go fast.

I test drove a Mustang GT a few months ago and while on the freeway I was just cruising along. I look down at the speedometer and I see that I am going 85mph. It didn’t even seem like I was going that quick, I guess because the car was so much smoother compared to mine and so I wasn’t able to fully judge just how fast I was going.

Yeah I do tell people that…

“Don’t worry about making it look obvious… if you are speeding and see a cop… freaking slam on your breaks to get your speed DOWN!!! They can’t do anything if they don’t zap your speed going fast!”

I got a ticket once before because I got caught doing 80 MPH in a 65 MPH. If I had just slowed down a little more I think I would have been ok, I was doing 100 MPH.

Damn.. this is something that I face problems with ..

I have gotten 5 citation within 10 months… Not proud of it. You can already guess how much I speed. Well, I think I just speed in bad areas because I was going 84 twice on highways which seems reasonable but got pulled over. Speed limit 70 mpg :P

I disagree. They will nail you “just because” if they see you slamming on your brakes.

I do the opposite. I slowly down-shift or coast…then, if he’s sitting there in his car, I will WAVE at him. Why? Only COPS wave at OTHER COPS so maybe he will think I’m a cop and leave me alone.

I tend to drive about 20 mph faster than the speed limit. I have no theory behind it…no formula…it just ends up being that way for some reason…

I got ticketed once two years back for driving 10 MPH over the speed limits, since then I have been serious about my driving speeds and have gotten radar detector installed! Radar detectors work really well for me!
