How To Increase Google AdSense CTR
I received an email from a reader who wanted my advise on increasing his Google AdSense CTR. Here is a copy of his email and below I will provide some tips based off that:
Hi Garry,
Since you are an expert with adsense (I consider you an expert anyway
. I wanted to know if you could have a look at my main website (listed above) and let me know if you see anything that I’m doing wrong with my adsense placement, or if there is any way I can improve my CTR on those pages.
Currently my CTR is xx-xx% and I’m making $xx – $xx per day from it. I know you strive for the 10% mark.
I’m starting to rank better in Google and I want to capitalize on that increased traffic.
Also is there a way I can find out which keywords pay more within my topic (weight loss) and how do I target them so that the higher paying adsense ads appear. Some of the ads are only paying 3 cents.
I know you are busy so if you could get back to me whenever your free that would be great.
Thanks in advance. Steve

Hi Steve,
Thanks for taking the time to write in and ask your question. Here are so things that I see that could help you improve you Google AdSense CTR. I visited your site today and quickly saw things that I believe would help squeeze out some more dollars for you.
Let’s look at your static article pages. For example, I am looking at this page:
http://www.weightlossweapons.com/recipes.html
In this page as well as the rest of the pages found within the left side navigation menu, Google AdSense is no where to be seen. Scrolling down almost half way down the page I can see a 468×60 text ad unit and then on the bottom of the left sidebar I can see a 160×600 image ad unit.
The 160×600 image unit is ok… it has a picture of an attractive female wearing something skimpy while promoting a weightloss product. Men will click on it simply to see more half naked girls. Woman will click on it because they are always curious about things like this… no offense to either gender.
The 468×60 is almost useless, but I am having trouble figuring out what is most important to you. Are you trying to sell affilate products? If so, then you should not really want to have your traffic leave by way of a Google AdSense click.
Let’s just assume that you want to monetize effectively with AdSense. I would immediatley remove the 468×60 and replace it with a 300×250. I don’t like to use the 336×280 because more advertisers prefer the 300×250. You’ll find a better variety of advertisers using the 300×250 rather than the 336×280.
Secondly, I would add a second 300×250 directly below the article title. Again this is all under the true assumption that you want to more effectively monetize your site with Google AdSense.
Here are some key things to remember. I always have a 300×250 above the top fold and usually directly below the page title. In many cases I wrap my text around the Google AdSense ad. This can be done by adding a very simple line of CSS:
<div style=”float:left;padding-right:10px;”>
GOOGLE ADSENSE CODE GOES HERE
</div>
If you want the Google AdSense Ad to float to the right, then I would do something like this:
<div style=”float:right;padding-left:10px;”>
GOOGLE ADSENSE CODE GOES HERE
</div>
I rarely use 120×600, 468×60. The most common sizes I use are as follows:
- 728×90 image only
- 300×250 image only / text only / image & text
- 160×600 image only / text only / image & text
I hope that you found this to be helpful. If anyone has any feedback please feel free to leave me a comment.

For a WordPress blog, I just started Garry’s SEOAdMax. However, it may be ego, but I will probably modify to have the Post text come a little higher. lol After all, people have to be coming to read what I’m writing. lol
On some other static sites where there is actually a product I don’t want the adsense to be too overpowering so I’ll mix it up.
Just so we’re clear, I clicked on that ad with the female only for research purposes…I swear! LOL
and so did the rest of the world… hehe
Going on a diet there soon bucko?
Hi Garry,
Thanks for the response. I am definitely going to switch up the ad formats and implement the changes that you’ve suggested. I’ll know the final totals as far as the June CTR tomorrow. I’ll compare them to the changes I’m going to make in July and see if there is an improvement.
Also, I am only monetizing with adsense on the main site and some affiliate stuff on the blog.
That one ad you mentioned is appealing but the payout is appalling. The lowest ppc I have (which will change).
Thanks again.
Hi Garry,
I suggest that you include a screenshot the next time you make such a expertise (you usually include them) because once the owner oof the side modifies the page it isn’t anymore possible to see the “before status”.
I didn’t know that the 300×250 format is preferred by the advertisers against the 336×280 format. How do you know that ?
ciao

I agree with Garry. Image ads can attract visitors to click. I ‘ll try soon. Thanks for the tips.
