How To Increase Your Mailing List Subscribers Using Social Networks

Internet marketers are very big on building up their opt in mailing lists. You may often wonder how folks like Joel Comm, Aaron Abber and others have built up their lists. All in all, it takes time and careful focus on growing your list. Now with that said, I’ll freely admit that I am NOT an email marketing guru. I don’t know too much about it like these other guys do. However, I do know a lot about practical and common sense things.

So for me, an inspiring email list marketer, one of the ways that I am doing to actively growing my opt in list is with targeting the social networks. While so many bloggers think about using the social networks to score free traffic to their blogs, I look at it as a way to score opt in entries to my mailing list. Gaining new entries to my mailing list using social networks is actually quite simple and you’ll probably kick yourself for not thinking about this too.

Most all social networks such as, Digg, StumbleUpon, Sphinn, and Propeller require registration for a free user account. These user accounts give people a profile page. On the profile page there is a field that allows you to enter your website URL or blog URL. Most all people totally take full advantage of this thinking that this will score them an added backlink.

The only problem with this is the fact that most of these profiles pages NOFOLLOW the link pointing back to your web site or blog. In other words, search engines can’t crawl to your web site or blog from that link, meaning you don’t get credit for the backlink. This isn’t a bad thing, because you shouldn’t be gaming Google anyways, however; many people might not have put as much effort into their profile pages if they had known this up front.

The good news to this situation though is in the trick that I am about to explain to you. Rather than point a link to the home page of your web site or blog, point the link to a special web page within your site that has been made specifically for the traffic of these social networks. You can see an example of mine on a page titled, Welcome To My Blog. On this page, I briefly explain to social network traffic who I am and what the purpose of the blog is. From there, I invite the traffic to join my free email mailing list by including a very simple opt in form on that page.

So really, instead of pointing links to your home page, point links to special pages created just for the social networks. By doing this, you can focus direct efforts on what is most important to you. If increasing your mailing list subscribers happens to be one of the more important goals, then presenting that option first to folks who travel to your site from the social networks is sure to help increase yoru opt in conversions.

Good idea, Garry. I’ve been taking a closer look at the various social networks available. I’m beginning to see how they can fit into a blogger’s promotional strategy.

That is great to hear. What other ways are you finding that social networks can work into a promotional strategy for a blogger?

Just from the standpoint of having your blog’s content shown in another corner of the web, which is seen by (hopefully) other passersby. Additionally, the likes of Twitter, FriendFeed, and SecondBrain are helpful in that they combine different activities one performs on the web (e.g., blog posting, twittering, stumbling, etc.).

http://www.FriendFeed.com by far is my most favorite social network. With FriendFeed.com I can take in all my content from all over the place and pull it into one place for people to read. It was funny when I joined to, it was like people were waiting for me there already and I was late to show up. I just joined FriendFeed about two weeks ago and I absolutely love it.

Freakin awesome dude! Man, I was a little worried about not getting my daily dose of multiple Garry Conn articles since you were going to post once daily. I must say, good sir, I am still getting the goods, and I know that each day you will bring something I can use immediately.

Keep up the good work Garry, you already know you’ve helped me a bunch, this tip here today is so freakin awesome man! Now, the question is, should I bookmark it and show the plan to the people we are building the page for? :)

The answer to your question, Joe, is “no”. We cannot afford to let this secret out on the Web and read by other people. It’s simply to risky.

Um, this blog does use the “cone of silence”, right?

LOL

You’re a trip… I thought that you misspelled CODE for cone, but as it appears you really meant to say, “CONE of silence” LOL

You are one twisted and strange individual. ;)

I have a very difficult time keeping myself from posting more than one per day. The amount of traffic I get from Google is nuts. The more content I publish equals more and more traffic. However, I too understand that it may be difficult for regular readers to follow my blog if it is too high in volume.

Garry,

I had never thought of that. Man, thanks for sharing. I’m curious what kind of response are you seeing?

The responses aren’t like totally insane or anything… but I am getting a nice trickle of new email list subscribers for my own blog here. With Aweber I can see the exact page where people sign up so it is easy for me to tell if they are signing up after visiting from the social networks.

What I could do is create a separate page for each social network that way I could know exactly which social network generates the most conversions in email list sign ups. But I am not going to invest that much time into it. As long as I have people subscribing to me email mailing list, I am a happy man. ;)

That’s a great idea, I’ve been thinking about starting a newsletter and building a list.

I see you promote Aweber quite a bit but are there any alternatives at a cheaper monthly rate. Or even a program that you can use for a yearly charge.

Hi Steve,

There are quite a few places such as GetResponse.com. However, it’s funny that you asked about this because I have an upcoming post that will appear in the next few days to a week that shares a most wonderful experience I had with Aweber.com. These folks are awesome and they are ready and standing by to help you with any of your needs. I believe you get what you pay for in life. For example, I use GoDaddy.com for my domain names.

I won’t tell you the exact number in my portfolio, but I can say that I do have several hundred. GoDaddy.com is more expensive than other places, and I know that. However, because of their level of customer service I am willing to pay more.

With Aweber, this is the only email list management program that I would put a personal recommendation on. Recently they had a price increase but with great purpose behind that. They provide some of the most advanced tools available that no other company provides. More to come on that very soon. If you want to learn more or join their services, you should visit Aweber.com.

Edit: I was going to plug the GetResponse.com URL with an AFF link but it seems that GetResponse.com is very shady about their affiliate program. They just wasted about 15 minutes of my time enrolling and THEN after the fact, they tell me that I actually have to be a GetResponse.com member to have the ability to sell their service. So, my final thoughts on this is that GetRsponse.com totally blows. How dare they waste my time like that. Aweber.com all the way man… ;)
