How To Make Money By Selling Ads
So you want to know how to make money online selling ads? In this blog post and video I am going to offer you some advice and tips on how to do this successfully.
In order to make money online by selling ads you need to first determine what kind of ads you want to sell. Are you wanting to display Google AdSense ads, or are you wanting to eventually sell private ads. On the topic of private ads, many people don’t even bother trying to recruit advertisers because most private ads can be replaced with affiliate banners instead.
Affiliate banners are ads that can earn money almost instantly if certain sales or leads are generated from them. Many times an affiliate banner ad can exceed earnings typical from the amount of money generated from selling a private banner ad sale.
My advice to you would be to seriously take some time to consider the advantages and disadvantages to all forms of selling ads. For example, with Google AdSense, you need quite a bit of traffic in order to make a decent amount of money.
For me, I know this and that was one of the main reasons why I decided to create multiple niche blogs. It is unlikely that one blog displaying AdSense ads will earn enough money to support you. The second item to mention with AdSense is the fact that you have to focus heavy on ad positions and generating article content to display high paying ads.
On my personal blog I actually prefer recruiting advertisers and selling private ads. While many people tell me that more money can be generated from displaying affiliate based banners, I never really had much luck doing this. In the past, my affiliate based banners would receive clicks but the clicks wouldn’t convert very well. So for me, on my personal blog, I prefer to accept money up front to display private banner ads rather than take the gamble of displaying affiliate banners that have the potential to earn more.
With that said, my advice to you would be to closely consider your readership. Try to figure out how your subscribers react to the different forms of ads on your blog. If your blog caters to regular readers then Google AdSense might not be the best option, as regular readers become blind to these kind of ads.
If you decide to display affiliate based banner ads, I would recommend having strict standards with the type of products and services you are advertising. When people visit your blog, they are placing trust in you to do the right thing and guide them in the right direction. If you display ads that lead to bogus products and services you break trust with your readership.
So with all that said, what do you think? What is the best option for selling ads on your blog or web site? What has worked best for you in the past? Drop a comment and share your thoughts.

Very good video Garry! I watched it twice, can’t believe it. More than $100 a day from adsense sound really tempting..
Thanks for the video..Jenni sent me over to check out your site..and I must say very helpful
Garry,
Thanks for sharing your experience:
“In the past, my affiliate based banners would receive clicks but the clicks wouldn’t convert very well…..”
I had always thought once a blog has lots of traffic (like yours) getting affiliate banner clicks and sales would usually happen. Looks like it takes more than traffic to get such sales.

I totally enjoyed selling private ads on bloggin-ads because it’s sooo less stressful when there is an automated plugin (OIOPub)
. Now that I only work on arcade sites, Adsense and other networks are more beneficial.

Garry – I am just setting up a news blog. (1)First, I have a question about your video. What does a camera cost, what kind of camera? What other equipment do I need to put something up on YouTube? I am going to use this to attract visitors to my site.
Re just starting out, do you suggest that I start right out w/private ads? What about putting AdBlade and Affiliate banners at the beginning?
I’d appreciate answers to both sets of questions, please.
Thanks for an informative video!
Garry –
I forgot to ask: I need numbers ($) for a business plan I’m putting together. Can you give me a simple answer to this question: how much is each ad worth that a site gets from AdSense or Clickbank? Also, from affiliate banners? I’d appreciate an estimate, even if it is a ballpark figure.
Thanks.
Thanks a lot for sharing. This article really helped me a lot in devising advertisement selling strategy for my site.
