I Am Moving My WordPress Blog To HostGator.com

with 19 comments

I want to announce that effective immediately that I am in the process of moving my blog to HostGator.com. I have been doing business with my current web host for three years now. I am not going to name who they are, but let’s just say that I have had many challenges with them.  I have tried to stick things out with them for as long as I could, but things just haven’t been working out.

HostGator is a company who I have trusted to host most all of my own niche blogs and sites, so it just makes sense to use them here for GarryConn.com. They have been an amazing company to work with. I have some draft material that I should really get around to posting on my blog about them.

One situation that happened recently, and I’ll make a long story short, I was in FTP and I accidently deleted the public_html directory of BloggingQuestions.com. I was very tired and it was very late, and I just made a stupid mistake.

Needless to say, the  instant I clicked delete, I knew that I had clicked the wrong folder, but it was too late. I instantly deleted my entire site. BloggingQuestions.com was erased and never to be seen again unless I rebuilt it from scratch.

I was pissed. Totally angry. How could I have done something so STUPID!!! Ohh, I was so angry with myself. But then, I said to myself that I need to shut up and make quick attempts towards fixing this problem.

So I went to HostGator.com and logged into live chat and explained to the tech what I did. He told me that it wasn’t a problem at all because HostGator makes weekly backups. He explained that the cost to restore your site would be $15 dollars and then he directed me to an order form which I had to fill out and at the bottom there was a section to explain the problem.

After filling out the form and submitted it into HostGator.com, my site was back up in less than 15 minutes as if nothing ever happened. To me that is priceless and that in itself is one of the main reasons why I use HostGator.com as my choice web hosting company.

Anyway, GarryConn.com might experience a little bit of downtime for you over the next day or so while we make this transitition over to HostGator.com. I am very excited and thrilled to soon be free from the chains of my old web hosting company. I will not be posting again until my blog has successfully made the move. After that then I will be back to posting one article each night at Midnight.

With that said, if you would also like to experience being treated like a king, sign up for HostGator.com.

  • HostGator.com Has Gone GREEN!

Did you know that HostGator.com is hosting over 1.3 million web sites? The average and typical web server I would estimate to have around a 450 Watt power source and HostGator.com has over 5000 servers. That is a lot of power that is being used. Recognizing that their servers take...

Yeah theres many other out there and im sure theyre ok as hosts but I dont think they will ever match host gator in terms of service and fixing end user screw ups, and believe me ive made a few boo boos along the way. LOL never deleted index.html though, thats funny !!!

  3. Hey bud… how you been?

Oh, you think that is funny. Well read that again, I didn’t delete the index.html file, I deleted the public_html directory which houses all the files and sub folders that run the entire site. It was like the absolute worst folder anyone could possibly delete. lol

  4. I think Host Gator is an excellent hosting company. I used to host all of my affiliate mini sites there when I was really into affiliate marketing. I am thinking about moving back to them because they have excellent customer service.

  5. Garry,

I’ve been very pleased with HostGator and have used them for about 4 or 5 years now. Their techs are patient and generally knowledgeable.

That being said I actually moved my primary blog to MediaTemple in the middle of last year (I still host a lot on HostGator). I moved my blog there because at one point HostGator took my site down because it was getting hit on their shared servers too hard (I’m on some $25/month reseller plan at HG). So at that point I made sure to install some caching on it to ease the burden, but there were issues with setting up SuperCache on their site and their techs weren’t being too helpful at that level of detail (I’d consider my company to be fairly adept at PHP/WP but their configuration wasn’t set for it). And I was worried if I ever was linked by a major site that my site would go down.

If you ask around, I think you’ll find that many if not most of the major sites use MediaTemple due to their grid service, which can handle getting dugg pretty well. I also had no trouble setting up caching there.

I will admit that they’re busy there and there are applications I wouldn’t use there, but for WP it’s at least worthwhile to consider. HostGator is also near the top in my mind, too, though : ).

    Cheers!

  6. Garry,

Good move. I use Hostgator for everything that I do. If you need a good affiliate link to sign-up with, just give a shout. :-)

By the way, if you’re using a Wordpress site, the Automatic Backup plug-in is a must-have. It will do this for you daily, weekly, whatever you want. not sure if BQ is a WP site or not.

    Good luck.

  7. That is a great perk to have with a hosting company. I have been using dreamhost, but am unsure if they have this feature or not. So far dreamhost has been decent.

  8. Great. All of my sites are hosted in Hostgator. And never ever experienced any downtime or problem. They are really highly recommended.

SO, I am seeing yet another design here in your blog :)

  9. Garry -

HostGator has been WONDERFUL to me. Their patience with this total tech-idiot is unbelievable.

I have both their “add-on” hosting and a reseller account and I have yet to be disappointed in a thing about that company or their service.

Do you know that they CALL me when I have a site down? Sure do! Walking thru a casino in November, cell phone rings. It’s HostGator calling to tell me I have a database issue and my site is down – and THEN, they walked me thru fixing it.

I am a big fan of HostGator. I believe you will be please with the change.

  10. Hahahaha Pot pie girl thats one of the funnier things Ive heard all week. In a Casino and you’re getting calls from HG, not in the middle of a texas holdem game I hope. I can just see that senario, “dealer hold on a sec I have call from my web hosting company”

  11. LOL!

No, thankfully it was NOT in the middle of a Hold ‘Em tourny – I wouldn’t have answered the phone! =)

  14. I have been having issues with my current host as well. Site seems to be down more than usual and am looking for a new host. HostGator is one I am looking into and will probably move there.

Also, question, what wordpress plugin did you use to get your profiles of your social sites added such as twitter, digg, reddit, etc? I have been looking for a plugin like that!

  15. Hi Garry,

shortly to let you know that your new dns resolves fine in Italy.

P.S. please unbold the content in your single.php ( I guess there has been accidentally left a “b” or “strong” tag unclosed )

  17. Indeed, Garry. Hostgator has proved to be the one of the absolute best hosting companies out there. I have lots of my niche sites hosted with them and haven’t had ANY problem that wasn’t resolved within minutes. What makes it for me most with Hostgator is their 24/7 live chat and how fast it is to resolve issues. Way to go, Hostgator. I hope it keeps getting better, :)

  18. Sounds like HostGator is the one! I have Bluehost and don’t have any issues with them.. but when it comes to deleting your public_html folder and being able to get it back for $15… that’s a priceless lesson. Thanks for sharing it with us.. I’ll definitely be getting HostGator for my next hosting account.

  19. Yes , I also hosted all my website and blog with Hostgator , and I confessed that host gator server is very reliable and fast too and their service uptime is far above 99.9% uptime as guarantee. Become their affiliate I can got back about 6 month of my hosting fee with them.
