I Know PHP Kung Fu

One of my most favorite movies is The Matrix. When I first saw that movie it totally blew my mind. Sadly, if you watch that movie today, almost ten years later, it’s actually kind of cheesy. The special effects aren’t really all that special, the plot is terribly far fetched and … the freaking cell phones are huge. :(

At any rate, one of my favorite scenes in the movie is when NEO was getting his data upload to his brain and announced, “I know Kung Fu!” Morpheus quickly responded with, “Show me…” and then they entered into this Kung Fu dojo where they proceeded to have their little kung fu match.

Anyway the movie really doesn’t have anything to do with PHP programing other than the fact that I am finally had enough with piecing together random strings of code after doing Google searches and crafting php pages that I really have no clue why they work. I am going to learn PHP Kung Fu.

Over the years, I have always felt the same way prior to learning. It was the same before I learned HTML. I felt overwhelmed and always put learning off. Same happened with CSS. Eventually I learned HTML and then shortly after I learned CSS. Today brings a new challenge and that is in learning PHP.

In my previous experiences working with various snippets of PHP commonly in WordPress, overall it doesn’t seem to be all that complicated. It’s just a matter of sitting back and saying, “Hey… screw it. I am not doing anything else until I learn this programming language!” and so that will be.

Don’t worry, I am still going to post blogs and things like that. But this is something that is long overdue and something that I have been wanting to learn for about a year. The main reason for wanting to learn PHP is because of my creativity. I have so many ideas bottled up inside my head. So many things that I want to extract from my mind and produce on digital paper.

As it stands, I can’t do that. I am very limited in my abilities to produce something live that came from my mind without having the programming skill to craft it. Typically what I do or have done in the past is simply Google search what I am trying to do and see if there is already code written that I can use, patch or modify to make it work. So anyway, wish me luck in my ventures of learning PHP Kung Fu. In the mean time, I’ll leave you with that scene from The Matrix, enjoy. ;)

PHP is a great language.

It is probably the best to start out with as it will become very easy to understand and there is quite a lot of things that you can do with it. Not to mention it is the most widly used programming language after all :)

I would recommend you check out Sitepoint PHP Forums if you have not already. A LOT of very helpful people there if you ever get stuck, you can usually get a reply to a problem within a few hours plus they have a lot of great examples around the site as well.

Congratulations! I know exactly what you mean about learning new technologies – it frees up your creativity unbelievably.

Enjoy, Barbara

I can’t even write a post without having a Google page open to stick in code snippets. Let us know how you go about your Kung Fu training and if you’d end up recommending the path you take – I gotta learn this stuff someday, too!!!

Hope you have a GREAT Father’s Day!

What about the spoon? Oh yeah there is no spoon.
I have a few php code snippets that I want to use that are just driving me nuts !!
Nuts I tell you.
The funny thing is once I start in on something it becomes a sort of obsession. (well for me anyways). Then all the hours of the day sort of melt away and I realize I haven’t gotten anything done and I’m still obsessively bashing my head against the desk top in utter frustration. Until I take a walk. Then when I come back and go at it again, I realize that its actually looking pretty good.
Weird dont you think. The creative process is like that for me. Sometime you have to walk from it for a bit.
How many times have I broken my blog themes until I googled and found out there’s this cool pgm called xaamp.

Have fun with the php Garry.
Oh an when is the Wordpress theme design tutorial coming out !!

I know php, it’s actually pretty easy and it doesn’t take that much to learn. Good luck.

I like the movie, always thought it was cheesy though!!

As for PHP, I am at the early stages of learning the grab and amend period of playing with PHP.

As far as I can tell it’s pretty simple, just lot’s of commands and add ons available.

Not knowing it is definitely holding me back.

Good luck Garry.
