Make Money Online Building a Blog about Gardening

Do you like gardening? Can you write about it? If you can answer yes to both of these questions, then in this article I can show you how you can make money online by building a blog about gardening. A gardening blog is a perfect niche blog to start because in my research it seems like there is an almost endless amount of material that you can write about.

Using the Google AdWords Keyword Tool as well as my trusty copy of Micro Niche Finder I can see that advertisers are willing to pay good money to display their ads on your blog. The only thing you need to do is create the blog, produce the content and score AdSense Money. Let me show you more of my findings.

Level One: Primary Keyword Filtration – Gardening

When I start my search for a niche topic I do a search for primary keywords such as using basic words like: car, boat, education, gardening, house, etc.  Doing this gives me a list of more focused words. We’ll call these secondary keywords. Here are two screen shots:

Google AdWords Keyword Tool For Gardening:

Keywords related to the word gardening sorted by estimated CPC.

In the above screen shot the secondary keyword phrase that has caught my eye is the term, garden lighting. In a few minutes we’ll talk more about this.

Micro Niche Finder For Gardening:

In the above screen shot you will see that Micro Niche Finder has also reported a similar keyword phrase, garden lights. I use Micro Niche Finder to cross reference when doing my first level primary keyword searches in order to see if I can find matching secondary keyword phrases in both programs.

Stop, stop, STOP !

Garry, please: stop it providing this killing in depth explanation, with real examples and high paying CPC’s on how you make money online. I’ve commited to stay away from the whole MMO stuff, then you and David came out with the Domain Parking Pages and I couldn’t resist and the result is that now I earn 20 new domains LOL.
Then you decided to take it further and turn it into a plugin (and I can remember vividly how much I earned with one blog with the aid of your Dynopage plugin and the new plugin is Dynopage on steroids).

How far do you want to push it ?

I’m sure you do it only to test my self discipline. Right ? ;)

Garry, I’m confused about how to deal with different keyword tools giving completely different numbers. Micro Niche Finder and the Google tool differ in their numbers but both make this seem like a good subject. Wordtracker, though, gives much lower numbers, low enough that I would wonder if this niche could be worth it. I don’t really know how to decide whether there will be enough searches.

Also, on a site like this, would you want to run either adsense, or affilate links, but not necessarily both at the same time? Does using the one dilute the other? Thanks for all the great info and ideas.

Thats a refreshing insight G-man, we follow a very similar method of determining phrase for a micro blog. I notice you sort by CPC, the way I was doing it and maybe take this as a question was sorting the KW’s by search volume. And building content around those phrases.
Other than trying to deliver the high Click and most relevant ads based on your chosen KW’s. Aren’t you sacrficing traffic for the click? OR DO I have it back ass wards.
I typically use 5 of the higher volume 2nd and 3rd level phrases for categories. Do you have a preference or a tested # for how many categories to use, or a number that seems to work out better?
Ive also been using my 2nd and 3rd level phrases as tags, I havent noticed any siginificant difference using these.

I made a boo boo a while back and went after a competitive phrase maybe a little too competitive and am trying to go at it sideways using my 2nd level phrases for content to capture traffic, and get a ranking for the main phrase.
Something I am going to be trying or doing is using my main KW in the title and 2nd level KW as well in the title, whihc I am finding weird because it just doesnt look appealing or clickable and we all know its about selling the click in google. So for instance Dry Wall finding a Dry wall contractor. Is it me or does that just look wrotten?
Anyhoo.
Thanks for the morale booster I was wondering if I were doing it correctly, you now hwo it is, you do something and wonder sheesh am I doing this right and then someone posts aboutit and its like hmmm guess I wasnt wrong.

Another fantastic article. I enjoyed seeing how to combine Google Adwords Tool with Micro Niche Finder.

I have to say that your blog has been my favourite blog and the first one I check each morning.

I have learned so much from you and last month I purchased Micro Niche Finder and I am happy to say that I already have earned more from Adsense than NF cost me.

Thanks a lot for writing your blog. It is beginning to give me an extra monthly income that will make things a whole lot more fun for the family and I. Plus it’s fun…. I love building these sites and checking stats… and I haven’t even moved into the English speaking market yet.

Max.

Mark,

IMHO you don’t have to compare the results in an ABSOLUTE way, but in a RELATIVE way.
Every keywoard suggestion tool has his own algorithms and the absolute results will every time differ. Try instead to see the patterns, that means look if the different tools come up with the same keywords and within the same tool which are the proportions of traffic.

Garry,

This is a great post. I love reading these articles where you walk your readers through how you pick niches. If people aren’t motivated to go start a niche gardening blog after this post, then they should just quit now!!

Thanks,
Fred

Wow. Garry you are unbelievable. So many other blogs and websites make promises and claims that for the most part are full of nothing but hype and fluff. You on the other hand offer exact instructions on how to do things. The fact that you do it so willingly also sets you far and above the others. I dare say your blog is one of the only ones, if not the only one that is in touch with the real world, and offers real world advice that works. Thank you Garry.

10 David Cooley { 10.22.08 at 7:00 am }

I will take GardenAndLights.com for $10 please.

I am in a hurry, so I really appreciate the work Garry, I used your list and the site is up and in the Pre Heating stages.

I chose GardenAndLights because it has 4400 searches low competition, and the 2 words I need together, Garden and Lights. Plus I think it sounds cool, easy to say to someone etc…

Oh, site is live by the way.

11 Chris Jacobson { 10.22.08 at 11:06 am }

While this is great information, the lazy internet marketer is going to take exactly what you posted here and turn it into their new project. We’ll then have hundreds of sites on gardening lights and the market will soon be too saturated for anyone to make a profit.

Chris, I respect your opinion, I just do not agree with it, because it seems a little short sighted.

Like saying, we should not teach our kids stuff, because they will get smart and take our jobs away?

I go with the old saying…. “The best executive is one who is training someone to take his place”

13 MLRebecca { 10.22.08 at 11:29 am }

This really is a great idea for a blog. As you pointed out, there’s so much content that can be generated on this one topic. Plus, it’s a topic that always requires learning and research. I agree with you in that someone could create a very profitable gardening blog if they build it up the way you suggested, and utilize those keywords. Thanks for sharing, Garry!

14 Bryan { 10.22.08 at 11:46 am }

Garry, great article. The way you broke down the 3 levels of research and how they’re used is just awesome.

@David: Love the site title you chose.

15 Allyn { 10.22.08 at 11:51 am }

very good info Garry. That is a very good tutorial on how to use micronichefinder in the real world.
As you now, my “gardneing” blog does very well with similar longtail keywords.
The nice thing about having a large, overall “green” blog is that I can do this same research for each individual post.
IOW–each post I make is a single micro niche contained within my large, powerful site.

I really appreciate your detailed tutorials!

Hi David,

Thanks for dropping the comment. The post is more about giving you the instructions on how to keyword research. I just used gardening as the example and you can see how it turned into garden lights.

I can do the same thing over with gardening and end with something else such as gardening tools, etc..

I wish you luck with your blog. It’s a very competitive area you are engaging into. ;)

17 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:08 pm }

You are stuck in the MMO Niche and there is no going back. You can try to quit — which if you recall I tried TWICE!!! — but it won’t happen. Once you are MMO you are always MMO. I feel your pain. lol

18 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:19 pm }

Hi Mark,

This is an excellent question and I think Alex gave you an excellent response. I don’t invest time into worrying about the differences in search count numbers. If you are one who uses multiple keywords tools, you use the information as best as you can to make sound decisions on which keyword phrases you push forward on. Don’t get tied up in differences, there will always been reported differences between the different programs.

19 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:19 pm }

Thanks for responding to Mark, you did an excellent job and I agree with you on this. ;)

20 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:26 pm }

Hi Shane,

While I do tend to sort keywords by highest to lowest estimated CPC, I also too recognize that some keywords and phrases are going to have way too much competition to rank for.

My goal is to rank for keyword phrases without the need of backlinks. I would much rather rank on the top ten results for a search term that has 100 monthly searches rather than rank on page two for a search term with 1000.

There is very much a balance in this job and you can not get greedy. If you do, then you just wasted your energy, resources and time.

If I build a niche blog and fail to get the rankings I was aiming for, then I have to invest time into getting backlinks, which is something I am very capable of doing, but would rather not due to the additional time added to my project.

21 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:28 pm }

Hi Max!

Wow… That really makes me feel happy to know that you value my blog like that. It is comments such as yours that really motivate me to continue helping. Thanks so much for taking the time to send me your comment.

I am very happy to learn that you are starting to advance in your income earnings. Isn’t that the most wonderful thing? Also too… I do check my stats too and indeed that is a nice feeling too to see the money increasing in my account.

Keep up the excellent work and I am very happy for you.

22 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:34 pm }

Hi Fred,

You are right. It does seem like I get a very good reaction from readers when I do posts like these. I am happy to do them and even more happy to see that it helps.

LOL… Yes indeed, if after reading this post and it turns out that one don’t want to do something like this — maybe not with gardening, but perhaps something else — then it is obvious that building niche blogs isn’t of much interest. ;)

23 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:37 pm }

I read the article just a few moments ago and commented. Thanks for taking the time out of your day to tell your readers about my blog. That means a lot to me and is very much appreciated. ;)

24 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:48 pm }

Hi Eric!

Wow! That is a great comment. Hey your blog isn’t too shabby either my friend. You focus a lot on SEO stuff and I focus a lot on SEM and niche blog building.

When I was checking out your blog a few weeks ago, I noticed that you and I do very similar things but go about them differently, which is wonderful to see in my opinion. It is good to see other people that have a backbone of experience and knowledge.

25 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:52 pm }

That is an awesome domain name David. See too there is still the element of having a domain name with an excellent resell value. If it looks good on a business card, it will look good on SitePoint.com. And that is good to know if you ever need quick cash to invest into another project or even for personal reasons.

Also, it is very nice to see that you take ACTION. One of my previous posts where I gave a list of available domain names, many people snagged them up but did nothing with them.

Rather than purchase a domain name and do nothing with it, one should purchase the domain name(s) and use The Niche Doctor Park Page WordPress Plugin. ;)

26 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 1:58 pm }

Hi Chris,

The purpose of this post is really to give people the insight on how to choose keywords for building niche blogs. They can do the same process but instead of starting with gardening, they can use cars. Also too, you can easily see how if I started my search over using gardening for a second time, I could choose a different path and end up with something like garden tractors.

I value your opinion and think that it is great that you took the time to leave a comment. After reading what I wrote and David’s comment too, what is your feedback on this?

27 Garry Conn { 10.22.08 at 2:00 pm }

Hi Allyn,

Your Life and Lawns blog is a very powerful resource that I believe will make you quite a bit of money in the near future. I know that it is making good money for you now, but the older that site gets and the more you continue working on it, soon it will become the John Chow of blogs about lawn care. ;)

Hi Garry,

I noticed that I’m not giving back a “thank you” as much as I could do. So I went back to your great post to say it out load now: Thank You :)

BTW as long as the post has so good quality content I thought it would be a good idea to share it on Digg, Delicious, Stumble, Reddit and G-bookmarks.

…and in holiday you was thinking about shouting this all down. If you’ll do it, I’ll buy a CESNA from one of your airplane blogs and come to Clarksville to put my hands in your face. LOL

ciao

You can try to quit — which if you recall I tried TWICE!!!

Did you mean that you wanted twice to quit blogging about MMO (which I remember) or to make money online at all (which I DON’T remember) ?

32 Dennis Edell { 10.22.08 at 6:01 pm }

I ave the same question Mark had for quite some time and i don’t see it answered (or I missed it which is entirely possible).

Is it ever really good or really bad to have adsense and affiliates on the same niche site?

Besides the usual argument about taking away affiliate sales with pennies from adsense.

First of all the concept itself is very interesting and different. Why make money online with blogging that to only on gardening? Your explanation is great. There are mare other keywords which have high search volumes and gives better traffic to the site or blog. But any way this blog is very great with lots of research made by the author.

37 KaHoongChai { 10.23.08 at 8:19 am }

If you notice it, you will see a bar named “Choose Columns to Display”, simple choose “Show All” and click enter then you can see all the info about estimated CPC and etc. :)

38 Allyn { 10.23.08 at 12:29 pm }

type in your keyword, input the capcha and then look at the dropdown that reads: “choose columns to display”
in that dropdown is a filtering option that reads: “show est average CPC”

then you will see it!
This is very useful because some words that you may think are crap are actually gold! and vice-versa of course.

G man what are your thoughts on the strength of competition and the high SOC for the phrase(s) you’ve chosen?
Or do you even consider the SOC. I typically look at the search numbers then check the SOC for the term I am interested in. BEing a little on the lazy side of creating micro blogs I dont want to devote enormous time and resources to ranking for phrases.

Hi Gary,
I think this my first visit, and really like your blog-except for one thing-”give me a buck to read the rest”????
I have a hard time believing you make any real money with this tactic, and I would venture to you lose a lot more (people who, like me, are put off and just leave.)
I was really looking forward to reading more…oh well!

47 Garry Conn { 01.17.09 at 2:17 pm }

Hi Jerry,

Firstly, I want to thank you for leaving me a comment and addressing your concern. I am sorry that asking you to pay me one dollar to read my article has offended you.

My blog is three years old. I have written a countless number of articles, each providing readers with some really amazing and high quality advice and tips.

There are a few things that I have published on my blog that I feel are just too valuable to give away to everyone. I feel like those who really want to learn from this article will be willing to tip me $1 dollar to read it.

I have never received any complaints until today and in fact the only things I have received are countless emails of the people who have read this article telling me that I should have charged them more.

I don’t think that you should take offense, but just come to the understanding that ordering the article might not be right for you. No big deal and no harm.

If you prefer, I’d like to invite you to my membership program where you can not only receive this article for free, but many more, including high quality video tutorials. The membership site is under way and will be online in the next day or so. In the mean time, you can have a free membership when you order my 60 minute video on how to build profitable niche blogs.

Once again, welcome to my blog and thanks for taking the time to voice your concerns.

48 Frank Polenose { 02.27.09 at 5:28 am }

Garry – I see no harm in you charging $1 to read on – I will admit I haven’t (but thats because I have to head out in a minute). I’ll be back to read on though!

It’s a token gesture – it’s not like you’re asking for $100!
