I just Stumbled, Alex King’s WP Mobile Edition 2.1 page and there is a great reason for it. A few weeks ago, I purchased a Blackberry Curve. While I’ll admit, I was a little behind on the mobile technology, I am now up to speed, thanks to Mark Mason and many other folks who gave me their feedback on a previously written article titled, Blackberry Curve VS Apple iPhone.

Download / Install Alex King’s WP Mobile Edition 2.1

Follow these simple steps and within 15 minutes your self hosted WordPress blog will not only be accessible to mobile Internet users but you will have also successfully monetized with using Google Adsense for Mobile Content. First step is to download Alex King’s WP Mobile Edition 2.1. Follow the instructions on installing the plugin. It’s actually very straight forward. If you need help installing plugins I would suggest that you visit the official WordPress Docs page on Installing WordPress Plugins.

Build Your AdSense For Mobile Content Ad Unit

After you have successfully downloaded, installed and activated Alex King’s WP Mobile Edition, jump over to your Google AdSense account and look for AdSense for mobile content. You might have to sign up for it, I am not sure, my account already had it included. If you account doesn’t you might want to visit the above link to Google’s sign up page. Here is a screen shot of my screen:

Google AdSense For Mobile Content

Click the AdSense for Mobile Content link and proceed to build the ad unit to your specifications. The last question asked will be to choose the programming language. For self hosted WordPress users, I would suggest choosing the PHP code option. Here is a screen shot:

Insert The AdSense For Mobile Content Ad Unit Into WP Mobile Edition

After you build your Google AdSense for Mobile Content Ad Unit to your specifications, simply copy the code to clipboard, open the index.php file from Alex King’s WP Mobile Edition 2.1 and paste the code in the location shown in the screen shot below:

After you insert the Google AdSense ad unit, you can save your page and upload it back to your server. I can take quite some time for your ads to become relevant. Also, Google has some strict policies on how to implement AdSense for mobile content. To learn more about how you can successfully get the Google bot to visit your mobilized version of your WordPress blog as well as get a complete understanding to the policies, I would suggest that you read the Google AdSense Policy For Mobile Content page. Nice, I had seen that feature in my adsense account, but never really looked into it. I also wondered how to get wordpress setup for mobile access. I will be downloading this plugin today, not sure if I will use adsense on it yet, but this is good info to store in my official database of Conn! :)

Excellent to see that you’ll be making your WordPress blog accessible for mobile users. That too means that I can easily visit your blog using my Blackberry while at my son’s various baseball games. :)

That’s an awesome tip! It’s gotta be an advantage to make things blackberry accessible, and I had no idea how to do it. Thanks so much for clueing me in :)

You are very welcome. I would say it does give you an advantage. I am a blogger and I use my Blackberry. So if I am surfing the net using my Blackberry or Mobile device such as a Razor which my wife owns, I’d say that many people are doing it too. WP Mobile Edition looks hot on a Razor.

Plus, if you are half way savvy with creating or customizing WordPress themes, the standard WordPress theme included with this plugin is very customizable. I submitted this story into Sphinn if anyone would like to read my follow up and vote. I have about another 200 words or so on the topic over at Sphinn.

Wow, I’ve never really looked into placing ads on mobile pages, but I guess people really do click on them. I actually really hate ads and since the cell phone is so small, I would most definitely hate seeing the ads on pages I browse through my phone. I guess it’s only me, but making money is making money :)

Well it all depends on how you are using the ads. If you are making pages for the purpose of providing people relevant information on things they have an interest in learning more about or eventually buying, then users would be expected to see ads. Again that is why they found your page in the first place.

If you’re talking about force feeding Google Ads on your personal blog that caters to people like me, then yeah for sure ads would suck, totally!

However, if you’re running a Blackberry software application review blog and provided ads there, it would totally compliment as well as enhance the user’s experience.

Good idea to push cellphone users to a lightweight version of a blog and then give them AdSense ads for mobile content.

But I use AdSense Deluxe plugin for managing AdSense ads within my WordPress. I put one ad unit within the post text. In the mobile version of the blog this unit is being shown. How do I turn it off?

The plugin has some code that will detect what kind of user is visiting your blog. It its a mobile user the program redirects to your special Mobile WordPress Theme… so from there, you can use the special Google AdSense for Mobile Content Ad units instead.

thanks by the way.
