Make Money Online with Article Marketing

Article marketing is a very important aspect of making money online. Today I am pleased to present to you an amazing article written by Mark Mason from MasonWorld.com. Mark is a very quick learner and it amazes me with how fast he is progressing with the world of Internet Marketing.

Over the last month Mark’s RSS subscription numbers have gone from around 10 to 70. While we’re not talking about crazy numbers here, I feel that is a very remarkable increase in his numbers. The problem with most situations like this is the fact that there is a lot of hidden talent buried under too many fluff blogs.

The purpose of this article is to teach you about article marketing and its importance in your business with blogging and making money online. When I asked Mark if he would like to write this article, I knew in advanced that it would be premium grade content. Needless to say, I was not disappointed upon delivery.

Now, with that being said, a curve ball is also being thrown here at Mark. I am such a tricky and unpredictable guy. What Mark doesn’t know (or soon will find out) is the intro paragraph I am writing on top of his article.

My goal, my vision is to help others learn more about the business of making money online. In the process of learning this business, you have to align yourself with smart people. Associating and making friends with folks who have intelligence, integrity and a desire to find success while also having sharing what they know with others is very important.

If you haven’t done so already, or if you haven’t even heard of Mark Mason or read his blog as MasonWorld.com, I strongly recommend that you do either one of two things or both:

  1. Subscribe to his RSS feed.
  2. Join his free mailing list.

If you decide to join his mailing list, you will instantly be able to download his free eBook which recaps everything he has learned current to date. I have read the book, it’s a quick and easy read and packed full of information that will not only help you in this business but inspire you to work even harder towards achieving your goals.

At the bottom of this article, learn how you can score a free review written by Mark Mason on his blog as well as scoring a free 125×125 banner advertisement. Mark’s traffic is on the rise, so in my opinion, it’s a pretty decent offer. Now for the article:

Slaughtering The Cow With Article Marketing

Written by Mark Mason
Cow Wreck Sign

Greetings People Of Conn!

Mark Mason here from MasonWorld.com with a guest post (thanks Garry).

When Garry Conn announced the competition against John Cow, I was excited to hear that Garry was building a site that would eventually go up for sale on sitepoint. You see, there are two things that create value for a site: traffic and conversions. When Garry picked Credit Card Debt as a niche, I knew he picked a winner.

(Note for the record that I tried to get Garry to put up a hamburger recipe site).

A Winning Strategy

Conversion is all about how to change traffic into dollars. For the credit card debt site that Garry built, there were three main ways to accomplish that: adsense revenue, affiliate lead programs, and the site mailing list. Garry’s site design is highly optimized for these three earning modes. I know Garry has covered these in previous posts, but I mention them here because my observation is that having three independent revenue streams is a great idea. Never put all of your hamburger patties on one grille, so to speak. A fourth revenue stream, information product creation, would be great if the contest were longer.

For conversion to matter, you need traffic. And here, Garry is also on the right track. His choice of an SEO optimized theme (which he designed) coupled with fantastic content centered around keyword-optimized tags means that Garry’s contest blog has a great foundation for organic traffic for years to come. Garry is an Adsense guru and knows this part of the business well. He also knows well that building traffic takes time and backlinks. That where I come in.

Let’s Talk About Article Marketing

Before I get started I want to clear one thing up — Article Marketing is often confused with “bum marketing,” but they are not really the same thing. It all seems obvious to me now, but I remember having a hard time getting a clear description of article marketing. So, I’d like to offer you what I consider the key ideas behind article marketing, and talk about how you can use it to kill a cow. If you want to know more about article marketing, I am going to point you to my five favorite resources at the end (which are great, but not required to become an article marketing guru or a cow slayer).

So, what is Article Marketing?

Article marketing refers to a traffic generation method that depends on submitting informative “articles” to sites called “article directories.” These articles generally consist of an article body that has generally useful information, and an article resource box that contains links back to the author’s site. This technique is sometimes mistakenly called “Bum Marketing.” Actually, as pointed out by Josh Spaulding, Article Marketing is one of the tools that Bum Marketers use (so named since it is so easy even a bum could do it.) (Getting the bum a laptop and a high speed internet connection is a social problem that is beyond the scope of this post.)

Good article directories have great traffic and strong Google page rank, so publishing your information there increases the chance that people will see and read what you have to say. Additionally, article directories allow people to copy and republish their articles, provided the article is unchanged and the resource box is preserved. This means that your article with your links could end up on multiple sites with lots of exposure. That means lots of backlinks and click-throughs to you. If you can convert that traffic, you can make money.

There are literally hundreds of article directories, the most famous of which is eZineArticles. (As an example, you can see one of my articles about Credit Card Debt.) The fact that there are hundreds of article directories opens up the possibility of submitting your article to many directories and multiplying your exposure. (There can be downsides to this, however, as we will discuss below).

Two Sources of Traffic

The beauty of article marketing is the possibility of two complementary sources of traffic. This is a key point that is often not understood. When you initially submit your articles, if they are well written, you should expect that they will be spread and read. If you write an effective resource box, those same readers will want more information and click the links in the box.

This simple idea generates immediate traffic to your site. In the case of the Connpetition, Garry is already seeing some of these click-through (even though out article marketing efforts have been modest due to resources).Eventually, as the article ages, it may fall lower in the article directory as it gets buried by newer articles on the same topic. This usually means that click-through traffic from articles will fall off as a function of time. Sometimes articles go viral and the clicks keep coming, but this is not usually the case.

Not to worry. Now your article has spread around the net with links to your site at the bottom. Google sees these (correctly) as backlinks to your site. Done properly, these backlinks can help you rank for the pages that the links are pointing to. So, while your direct click-through traffic is falling off, your organic search engine traffic will increase. Pretty cool, eh?

A word about content and keywords

There are lots of things to think about when you are writing articles for article marketing. Most importantly, you need to have a keyword strategy for the content on your site and the content in your article. It may not make sense to directly compete with your own website, for example. Rather, you may want to choose keywords for your articles that complement the content on your site. Garry is a keyword guru, but I will give you a simple example of what I mean here.

For example, if you have a site on “butchering cows,” you may want to write an article for article marketing on “castrating cows” knowing that people interested in castrating cows will also be interested in butchering cows. You need to think about this carefully.

Earlier, I mentioned that you could submit the same article to multiple directories. You can, and I do. But you need a strategy for that as well to balance the effectiveness of the submission against the impact of duplicate content. Google expects syndicated content to be duplicated, but there are still tradeoffs that need to be considered (beyond the scope of this brief article).

Article Marketing Resources

As promised, here are five resources that I actually use for article marketing. I have purchased these tools myself. Don’t misunderstand me: you can be successful in article marketing without any tools. These are the tools that I personally use to improve the quality and productivity of my article marketing efforts.

  • Article Marketing Domination. This is an excellent eBook by article marketing guru Josh Spaulding. This eBook covers all of the details that i have glossed over above, and is a complete reference. You can do article marketing without knowing all the details, but you will get lot better results if you have all the facts. Most things in life are like this.
  • Article Post Robot. A tool for submitting articles to multiple sites. It is really tedious and boring to submit the same article to 50 article directories. Article Post Robot automated this process. This is not the most elegant tool on the planet, but it works very well for me on over 50 article directories (the software supports many more).
  • Instant Article Wizard Pro. IAW Pro is an amazing tool for article research. I just learned about this tool this week, and have used it a few times with incredible results. Basically it searches the web for research on your keywords and mashes the pieces together in reasonable sounding paragraphs. Cuts article writing time down by a factor of ten or more in my experience. Even if you have no intention of buying this thing, you have got to see the video.
  • Micro Niche Finder. One of the most important parts of Article Marketing (not really covered well in this article) is keyword selection. Garry and I both use Micro Niche Finder for all my keyword research.
  • Josh Spaulding. OK — he is not a resource, actually. He is a person – a really nice one. Josh is my “go to guy” and mentor for Article Marketing (Garry is my Blogging, Adsense, and WP Theme Guru), and Josh is also the author of Article Marketing Domination.

The Bottom Line on Article Marketing

Article marketing is a great way to promote your website, affiliate products or affiliate program. You can use article marketing to take over almost any keyword in Google (given enough time and effort). Given a longer contest, we could use this to outrank Cow on his own site just for fun if we wanted to. It is powerful vood o stuff. By writing an article that delivers value and offers a subtle mention of your affiliate product or critical keywords, you’re well on your way to getting the proper exposure for your promotion (whatever it is). Simply put, Article Marketing is a great way to promote your business online.

Death to the Cow!

Mark Mason

Great article and resources, Mark! I’m glad that I’ll always be one of your first 100 RSS subscribers. I had no idea you were such a funny guy – your headshot is waaaaay too serious! While I will refrain from out-and-out plagairism with regard to your sample article, I hope you will remember that it is, after all, the sincerest form of flattery. :-)

Thanks Mark/Garry for the plugs. Article Marketing is something terribly misunderstand in general, but one of the most valuable free traffic/lead generators out there.

Article submissions are great for promoting mini-sites, generating leads etc.

Great article, Mark. Alot of valid points!

@Mr. Conn — Thanks for the opportunity to post here, Garry. You are a good friend. Your make money online blog was one of the first that I found, and I owe a lot of my progress to you. Props to you for always being willing to help “the little guys.” Having said that, I must admit I still have a lot of work to do to get where I want to be. Like you, I think helping people is the best way to get there.

@Annie — Thanks. That makes me smile. I guess I need to get some head shot rotator software and swap in some pictures of me with a lampshade on my head (such pictures exist, I’m told).

@Josh — what can I say. You are the man. Everything that I learned to get started in article marketing came from your Article Marketing Domination eBook and your coaching course. So, thanks for the education.

BTW, can I get my username and password back?

On some forums I’ve read to put your article on your site first and allow it to be indexed. This gives your site “ownership” when it comes to duplicate content issues. However, it won’t necessarily give you the highest rankings.

I would think that would work well for established sites that have some ranking and get crawled often. But, I wonder if you are just starting out, if you should rely on the article sites and their established rankings. Thoughts?

Also, Articles and Article marketing do allow for deep linking which is especially helpful with phrases that aren’t as competitive (as suggested by Micro Niche Finder). Question, let’s say I want to rank for “10-ways to BBQ a Cow”. Would one method be to write articles on 5-ways and deep link to the 10-ways page on my site (that is properly structured and optimized)? Thoughts?

Hey Mark (and Garry)

This is probably one of the best articles I’ve read about Article Marketing. Mainly because I actually understood it. LOL. No big fancy words, cause you know how us country kids is.

Anyway, I downloaded the copy and posted it to two of my blogs.

However, I also posted a lead-in paragraph that mentioned that the article was originally posted here and that I had the permission of both you and Garry for posting it on my site.

Just thought you’d like to know. LOL.

PS, I totally Digg your post.

@FlyingRates — As a policy, I do not syndicate my “premium” content onto the article directories. The reason is not the dreaded “duplicate content penalty.” The reason is that I want people on MY site lingering there, opting into my list and getting into my funnel. My pillar content is how I get them there. Content is King, and I never give the good stuff away (except for this article, of course — LOL).

Regarding duplicate content, experts that I trust (Andy Beard, Josh Spaulding, etc) insist there is no big bad duplicate content penalty for syndicated content. (Note there is a “penality” for two copies of the same content on the same site because of search fragmentation, but that is another issue). In fact, google expects good stuff to be syndicated (think Associated Press). What they also expect is a backlink to the source. So, if you do syndicate your premium content insist on a backlink.

You can read alot more about this — google for the duplicate content summit last June (2007).

You are right about deep links. If you find that you have a deep page that is ranking well, you can really help it with 50 article directory backlinks. Your 5 ways versus ten ways idea is great, and exactly what I do. Put great but somewhat incomplete articles in the article directories. Leave them wanting more. That will get you the manual clicks to your site while you are waiting on the backlinks to help in the SERPs.

Hope that helps.

Mark

and…

“Regarding duplicate content, experts that I trust (Andy Beard, Josh Spaulding, etc) insist there is no big bad duplicate content penalty for syndicated content.”

You know I agree with this, but there is one thing that bothers me and it’s slightly off topic. When I write a post on a blog and then I get an email trackback notification within a few minutes of publishing the post, I’ll check it out and see the a Splog has totally tapped into my RSS feed and stole the article. Just curious, I usually check Google to see if the stolen post got indexed and sometimes it does and ranks better than my original post. I don’t think there is anything that can be done about it, but it still kind of sucks.

Well, you can report SPLOGS to google. I have heard that they will do something, but I have never done this myself.

My thinking is that they will only outrank you temporarily if at all. Have you ever seen a case where you were outranked over the long haul by a copy of your article?

Thanks,
Mark

@Garry — Funny that you mention that. I just had a trackback on my blog from another site. It looked relatively harmless so I left it. I can use all of the backlinks I can muster at this point. I did edit the trackback on my site since the description wasn’t entirely accurate.

What a great article :)

I have been reading about article marketing for a long while now…. I tend to want to do it but then…. the idea of writing a long involved post that does not get to go on my blog, or appear as a guest post makes me move away from it….

However, I know I need to get over this and jump in. I guess the first thing I need to establish is a keyword set for the blog I am pushing, then I can find the compliment words to work with.

OK… I am going to create an article this week and try this out. Thanks for the tips.

Oh — good point. I usually only shoot for 300 words. So, write something good, but leave them wanting more (from your site). You should be able to write a decent article for article marketing in 15 minutes or less in many cases.

Sometimes, I even cut down a big article like this one — making it unique. Maybe I will do that tonight as an example. I will point the links back to this post, giving it a boost, and submit to 30 or so article directories.

Mark

Gogo — Try this.

1. Find a detailed “pillar content” post on your blog that you are really proud of and want to send traffic to.

2. Write a 300 word summary. Leave out a lot of details. Hit the high points.

3. If you have time, think about some good keywords and work them into the 300 word article.

4. Post that article to ezineArticles.com. In the resource box, say “Was this information on KEYWORD1 helpful? For more information on KEYWORD2 visit us at foobar.com

It is an easy way to get started.

Thanks,
Mark

Great info, I agree that many equate article marketing with bum marketing, I know I did, that’s how I was taught. But, I know how to learn from the error in my ways, thanks for pointing out my novice understanding!

Really though, article marketing is a pretty stable way to get some good links and traffic, amongst all the new technologies and softwares, it remains one of the most helpful ways to promote a site, blog, or offer.

It also remains one of the most misunderstood. Articles like this help clear things up a bit.

As promised, here is a cutdown of the article that I will use for article marketing. When the article is approved, I will post some link examples.

The one thing that a webmaster cannot live without is traffic. It is the holy grail of all web mastery, and is constantly sought by all web site owners from Google to the smallest startup. The one thing we know for sure is that if you want to make money online, you need traffic to your website. In this article, I explain how Article Marketing can do just that.

You may have the best product on the web, and you may be able to convert 90% of your visitors to a sale. But, for conversion to matter, you need traffic. Having a website with a SEO optimized design coupled with fantastic content centered around keyword-optimized tags is the first step. There are two parts to SEO — content relevance to keywords (thing one) and authority (thing two). It is “thing two,” largely measured by the strength of backlinks, that determines how you rank against your competition.

For the record, it is important to clear one thing up — Article Marketing is often confused with “bum marketing,” but they are not really the same thing. Bum Marketing (not covered here) is a marketing strategy that sometimes uses Article Marketing to convert traffic to sales. Article Marketing is a technique for driving traffic and creating page authority. In this article, some key ideas behind article marketing are explained.

As mentioned before, article marketing refers to a traffic generation method. This method depends on submitting informative “articles” to sites called “article directories.” These articles generally consist of an article body that has generally useful information, and an article resource box that contains links back to the author’s site. This is the technique that is sometimes mistakenly called “Bum Marketing” (so named since it is so easy even a bum could do it.) (Getting the bum a laptop and a high speed internet connection is a social problem that is beyond the scope of this article.)

There are literally hundreds of article directories. The fact that there are hundreds of article directories opens up the interesting possibility of submitting your articles to many directories and multiplying your exposure. (There can be downsides to this, however, as will be discussed below).
The strength of article marketing is the promise of two complementary sources of traffic.

This is a key idea that is often not understood. When you initially submit your articles, if they are well written, you should expect that they will be spread wide and read often. If you write an effective resource box (the box at the bottom of the article), those same readers will want more information and click the links in the box – landing on your site. Instant traffic.

This simple idea generates immediate traffic to your site. Once your article has spread around the net with links to your site at the bottom, Google will see these links as backlinks to your site. Done properly, these backlinks can help you rank for the pages that the links are pointing to. So, while your direct click-through traffic is falling off, your organic search engine traffic will increase.

Earlier, it was mentioned that you could submit the same article to multiple directories. You can, but you need a strategy for that as well to balance the effectiveness of the submission against the impact of duplicate content. Google expects syndicated content to be duplicated, but there are still tradeoffs that need to be considered (beyond the scope of this brief article).

Article marketing is a fantastic way to promote your website, affiliate products or affiliate program. You can use article marketing to take over almost any keyword in Google (given enough time and effort). By writing an article that delivers value and offers a subtle mention of your affiliate product or critical keywords, you’re well on your way to getting the proper exposure for your promotion. As such, Article Marketing is a great way to promote your business online.
