Maybe People Are Getting The Wrong Idea About Cowpetition?
I have a Google Alert set up for my name, “Garry Conn” and it allows me to kind of be a fly on the wall and observe what others say about me on their blog. The alert can be considered valuable, entertaining or just a waste in one’s email box, I find it to be one of my favorite alerts.
So the word on the street is that the Cowpetition doesn’t cater to the broke or the noob in Internet Marketing. The word is that in order to follow in the foot steps of Cowpetition one would need to have quite a bit of money up front.
I am not sure how much money the John Cow team put into this, but make no mistake, I am a total CHEAP ASS. I don’t spend money, never have and never will. It takes a lot to sell me on anything. If you cold call me, I hang up after cussing you. If you knock on my door it gets slammed in your face. Some may consider me being tight with money a strength while others see it as a weakness. However you see it, that is your opinion. But one thing remains true. I did not invest ANY money into DebtConsolidationBook.com other than paying for the cost of the domain name and paying for hosting.
Here are some quotes that I found to be pretty interesting:
…the site flipping contest between John Cow and Garry Conn – although it was meant to be something that thought beginners stuff, it was useless to most as there was a huge amount of investment taken by the former (I’m not sure about the latter) such as paid press releases, a collection of staff that wrote articles, and more importantly a huge established userbase that helped with things… (they gave away an XBOX!) – all in all, total costs would have been around $X,XXX and newbies just can’t afford that starting out.

and…
…I totally agree about the Cow v. Conn sha-bang… it was a whole lot of nothing for me because I knew the whole time that they were only allowed to be popular because tons of other people wrote the articles and produced the traffic. It really wasn’t run as well as I would have hoped.

and…
…I agree that the Conn vs Cow thing was useless for a newbie since it required you buying this product and that.

So, just for the record. I have no idea how much money John Cow has invested into his game, but I can honestly say that anyone can do what I just did for under $25 dollars. The only program I used was Micro Niche Finder, which is optional. The cost for Micro Niche Finder is $67 dollars.
Anyone with a blog can contact a vendor or a manufacture and coordinate a contest with a prize that can be used in exchange for paying people cash. In my case I was able to work with two companies for two contest.
While John Cow gave away everything but kitchen sink I was able to lock in on two prizes, WhiteSmoke.com software and Joel Comm’s Secret Classroom. From there I was able to use these two products towards getting people to write content for me with a chance to win the prizes. The winner of one of those prizes ended up writing an eBook for me. The people that participated in the contests provided over 25 quality written articles for me and also distributed prewritten articles on their blogs that are still to this date spreading like wild fire and will continue to do so for months on end.
For those who believe that they can’t do what I did, step back for a few minutes and compare my game play to my competition’s game play. When you do that, then also compare the amount of my time and money invested compared to the time and money invested by John Cow. When you do that, then compare the amount of money I made on DebtConsolidationBook.com against the amount of money GamerzReviewz.com made. After you do that, let’s look at the success my auction is bringing in. While John Cow’s auction indeed is $500 up on my auction at $1100.00 dollars, consider the amount of work I did to achieve a virtually FREE $600 dollar earning.
John Cow worked his ass off and admitted that he was tired and very eager to move on from the auction. My only gripe with the auction was the added commitment I made during a busy time in my personal life with my son’s baseball. I really didn’t work hard at all in this game, I worked smart.
I applied what I know and do everyday with niche blog building and added a very viral twist into the mix. But make no mistake, you can do exactly what I did for next to nothing invested. You’d have to ask COW Man about the above quotes. For me, I did something really special and it was a huge success. I broke free from my traditional model of making money with Google AdSense and so far it has proven to be a huge success. Not too shabby results going against multiple trained people in the business of making money online.
I have always thought since day one that most all of the things that John Cow was providing would be too extreme for new beginners to follow. While I do totally appreciate his work, I really mean that, for me, I am just a simple guy who does simple things to make simple money online. I am not complicated and I don’t like to front money to make money. At times I do, but you better believe that the money I use in a project is something very well thought out.
So to those reading this… what are your thoughts about CowPetition? I’d like feedback for both myself and John Cow. Good, bad, ugly or nice… what are your thoughts?

I think the competition is not really crap. I’ve been hearing that you’ll get dominated in it but I think you’ve made a fairly great fight. As you have said you haven’t invested that much which for me is good thing… keep t up dude..
Hi Garry, clever post!
John Cow & John Chow, are they the same? Cow vs Chow!
Recently i’ve stumbled upon a revolutionary ‘Business-in-a-Box’ system in a Free eBook, it has helped me to make some money since and i think you might be interested. It’s very new, you may want to write a review to share with readers if you find it useful
(Instant download the Free eBook through my link, no opt-in required!)
Best,

I think it was just two different approaches. I do think your’s caters more towards the newbie or the cheap marketers! YEAH BABY!!! lol
John Cow obviously has a lot of resources at their disposal, it just wish people would pay closer attention to how the whole thing was done. There was a lot of great info from both sides, and, I KNOW people can follow your methods with little investment, I can’t say the same for Cow’s.
However, with some smart thinking, one could probably duplicate Cow’s method as well. Just not in the short amount of time. Giving a little more time, it would probably be a lot easier.
The purpose was not to show people how to do it as fast as you two did it, but simply to show people how to do it period. I think that is what I took away from it, no way I’m doing what you all did in under a month…I’d go crazy!
I guess I didn’t follow along with the cowpetition, but I didn’t see any real “instructions” or “how-to” make money online instructions for newbie’s. I mean, keyword research, creating a blog, getting an e-book and people to write for it, link building and such doesn’t really need a whole lot of instructions.
Personally, I’d rather take your approach rather than spending money. If all of your resources (and money) are in one pot, what happens when you need those resources? I have a job so, I don’t need to rely on income from the web, its just extra cash. But for those who are out of work spending more money does not make sense. If you can do your thing with less effort but scale that model to the power of 10 then you should be good to go. Of course its better to start online marketing before you quit / loose your job so you have a head start because making money online doesn’t exactly happen over night.
I think your approach was very noob friendly. Not only noob friendly but “lazy” bum friendly which really fits well with my personality lol. I much prefer the “work smart, not hard” idea myself.
Garry, do you know if the “real” cow was the one you made the challenge with or if it was the new owner by then? I am still pretty confident that you would have completely demolished the “real” cow in this competition. But who knows who the new owner really is…obviously a lot more experienced than bob every was.
As for the two sites, I still think yours is the better site with more potential and probably more revenue potential. I think the reason his bid is higher is partially because of the extras he is throwing in (kind of takes away from the comparison of the two “sites” selling to be honest) and he has a little more reach.
Do you have any updates on earnings? I wonder which site will have more revenue by the time the sales are over with regardless of which one “wins”
Thanks for the comment. Your most recent post on your blog was pretty interested as I just purchased OIOPublisher after the long awaited MaxPress.
http://www.melvinblog.com/2008/07/max-banner-ads/
You said, “OIO direct is still better by far, Max Banner Ads is free and would be very beneficial to those who do not have a $37.”
But seriously, we’re talking about $37 dollars. How hard is it to save up for $37 dollars. OIOPublisher is legit. It rocks. MaxPress is cool too, but so now people need to give out a free backlink for it? I’d rather pay $37 dollars or even more. In the black market, a backlink on my blog is worth a lot.
I don’t have time to read yet another 37 page eBook on how to make money online. So, what is soooo special about this eBook compared to others?
I think John Cow did a great job on his end of the game. I agree and think both plans should be followed in a wider time frame.
You said this, “However, with some smart thinking, one could probably duplicate Cow’s method as well.”
Are you saying that following John Cow’s plan is a challenge or something difficult to follow?
It amazes me how people can accurately summarize what I do in 25 words or less.
Yeah I got a little bent when John Cow published his auction. I am not sure what is worth more… his site or the entire inventory found at Walmart that he is throwing into the mix. My first thoughts when I visited the auction two weeks ago was wondering what the hell I was buying, a niche blog or tons of software that only allows me to make $35 dollars / month on a blog.
Day one when Cow approached me with the challenge. I had suspected that he was not Bob. But I decided to accept the challenge so that I could force an identity extraction, or at a minimum force a confirm that Bob was definitely out.
Bob would have had no hope against me. The new John Cow, which I know his true identity, is actually a pretty well skilled Internet Marketer. He asked me to keep a tight lip last month on this and I will honor that. However, some other people are starting to catch on to who he is.
When I realized who he was, I knew that I would have a serious challenge up ahead. After it’s all said and done, I am actually really excited to see how well I did against John Cow. His auction will more likely sell for more money than me — it would have been nice to do a straight up competition — but he did play dirty by offering up so many extras in the auction.
I guess if I had it to do over again, I could have offered to include my house, my car and a few laptops. That is stupid… if it was a straight up auction, I have no doubt that I would be winning.
Wow, it’s been a while since I commented but I have been reading and watching over at sitepoint. I wanted to speak up here as I read all those comments, comments here and posts throughout the contest. I think the reason everyone is commenting about it is because we all thought it would be a contest between two men that were learning about flipping. We would learn as you both would learn. But it seemed that John really did know TONS about it and yes he spent TONS of money. I know on his sitepoint he states he bought press releases and he has a slew of writers. I’m not sure how many or how much he paid them but I know “cheap” writers would do pennies a word and depending how many words for the review, etc.
I too actually thought we’d watch two (don’t be offended) amatures (sp) as they learned the ropes. While you state you did and you can see that you didn’t have to put a lot in it it was very inspiring. Too much actually for me, I’ll explain later. haha. I do hope you learned a ton while doing it and can get into the habit of flipping, it really looks like a lot of fun.
I’m sure I’ll chat at ya later.
Don’t forget to post more details of your traffic numbers and sources on the auction.
I still plan to write something more.
Guessing who the new John Cow is wasn’t a major challenge.
p.s. if you are quoting someone give them a link, otherwise it destroys context for your readers, and isn’t ideal for the search engines to attribute source.
