MMO WordPress Theme Competition?
So yesterday I wrote a post asking readers their thoughts on doing a WordPress theme school. I had some pretty good feedback with that. One paticular comment caught my eye was from Mark Mason. As it seems, Mark being so very gifted and talented in the business of buying high quality domain names (times x 2) he offered an idea of doing a nice MMO twist to the whole WordPress theme school.
Here is what Mark said in the comment:
“I think that you said it best — you are an IM/MMO guy. Given that, I’d be interested in a twist — a WP Theme tutorial about how to make themes that MMO. You can still hit all the tech stuff, but why you do what you do is even more interesting than how, IMHO.
Regards,
Mark”
I like that idea. I think that would be pretty cool. So here are my thoughts and please do share some feedback with me on this.
What about doing this in two sections. Part one is getting a few people on board with this Make Money Online WordPress Theme school. I’ll teach you guys some basic level things with making themes. I’ll cover some SEO stuff and then once we get past that part, we’ll go to round two.
Round two gets interesting… Round two is where the people who were in the classroom, so to speak, engage into a friendly little competition very much like the competition that John Cow and myself did.
Now, I don’t know all the details. John and I decided to build our blogs and sell the on SitePoint. You guys could do that too, as I said… all that is in the air.
But the part I am most interested in is doing a class that will teach some folks how do make some killer WordPress themes for MMO and then to turn you all loose and show me what you have learned by launching your own new blogs based off what you learned in class. Perhaps then you would have 30 days and then we could list it up in SitePoint.com and see which student of mine makes the most money.
Some other ideas would be instead of selling the sites, to see which site can make the most money using AdSense or something like that. However, that part gets a little tricky as authenticaing the income # can be somewhat confidential and private.
At any rate, I’d like to teach you guys a thing or two about design and has Mark had mentioned in his comment, it would indeed be a great idea to put a lot of the MMO syrup into the mixing bowl.
So what are you thoughts? Anyone want to learn themes? Anyone want to then take what you have learned and apply it into a contest.
Also, I could probably throw in some paypal.com money as an award into the mix some how too. But if I do that, then you guys would really need to kick my name around a little bit on your own blogs.

Morning G !!
I’m in.
I think this wordpress theme school MMO idea is just wicked !!
leave it to mark to cook up a whacky idea like that. Must be the time he’s been spending in Starfleet Academy.
Speaking of Mark is he doing the gosh darned Podcast yet !!! Some one wanna hoof his derriere (french Canadian for A$$) and get him to some pod on his blog.
I like it, sounds very interesting. I know for sure I want to learn how to theme, I would possibly be interested in a contest. However, I don’t think I have the time/resources to do something similar the the Conn/Cow battle…..that thing was huge!
look forward to whatever you cook up though.
I think that this is a great idea. I would love to learn how to make WordPress themes.
Maybe the competition could be who could make the most money selling downloads of the WP theme. I am sure that there must be some way to verify this.
Good ideas Garry and Mark, of course.
I’ll volunteer to be the arbiter.
I’ll give everyone my AdSense code number to insert in their websites, then I could give a fair and impartial accounting of the contest results.
Just let me know when you all want to start.

I am planning to add a monthly (at least) podcast this summer, but first I am trying to launch my niche adsense theme product. The podcast production will be managed by Lt. Uhura.

Sounds like a cool idea. I’ll be happy to participate / help out however I can. I can pretty much do anything with Wordpress but I need help with the MMO part – Where to position ads, how to get visitors to convert those kind of things.
Drop me a line if your interested.
I’m missing one point about the competition.
How well the SEO of a theme is, isn’t a misurable science. Given that, I don’t understand on what whe can base the competition.
I push it a little further and ask you: does the SEO of a theme really matters for making money online ?
How much is in your opinion the influence on the earnings of your blog due to the SEO of your theme ?
I personally think that, good content, an appropriate styling of the theme (in regard of the type of blog you run, i.e. for one time visitors rather than recurring visitors) and backlinks are far more important.
Would love to here your opinion.

Dear Garry,
I’m happy to WATCH a competition, but I don’t have the technical skills to compete.
I want to learn everything I can on building a theme, and YOU’RE THE MAN!
I’ll wait to find out which way this goes!
Have a great day!
Brennan
Hey Brennan,
nice to hear from you.
Are you ok again ?

Count me in… I’m pretty good at designing websites, but I sure would LOVE to learn how to turn my designs into WP themes.
I was working on a new theme for another site, so your post is timely. I would love to read and tinker. I’m not sure I could committ to a contest though.
But get some details going, and I’ll see what I can do.
