My Advice To Those Who Want To Start Blogging

Free Web Designs

Do not think that finding success in blogging comes easy. Prepare yourself for many trials and errors and learn from each and every mistake that you make. Take what you have learned and apply it immediately. Once you apply what you have learned, expect to make even more mistakes. Once again, learn from them.

Educate yourself. Understand how WordPress works. Teach yourself the basics of HTML and PHP. Discover how search engines work, especially Google and learn how to have your article content visible in search engines.

Learn about social networks and how to find and make friends online who share a common interest with you. Never have fear in asking others for help. The worse they can say is no and those who do decide to help, their help will provide a significant benefit for you and the growth of your blog.

Never break trust with your readership and always treat them with the highest level of love and respect. Always extend your knowledge and time towards helping them. Your blog is nothing without its readership and you are nothing without your blog. Treat your readership exactly how you would want to be treated yourself. Always be yourself and be true with your stories and the information you share with them.

Blogging is not as easy as most people think it is. It’s hard work and it’s a big trial error process that takes time. Eventually, things start to happen.

Knowing HTML/php, etc is extremely useful as you can do most changes on your blog yourself. I am personally a computer/software engineer so it really helped me into my blogging journey.

As you mention, networking with other is extremely important. It took me sooo long before realizing that and it made a HUGE difference when I started doing it!

Garry,

How right you are.

Many start blogging with the expectation that the money will start pouring in immediately. When you blog, money should be a side effect of your blogging, it should never be the primary purpose.

Your mission (and you need to accept it to become successful) is to provide maximum content that people will be genuinely happy to read about! When you are making an impact in people’s lives with your blogging, that is the point where your income starts to rise. People don’t buy from sploggers (Spam Bloggers) except in rare circumstances. The ones who do succeed in making money with splogs, is because of the sheer volume of blogs that they have.

If you write stuff that you are proud to stand behind with your own name… that is the point where people will talk about you, send you readers and buy from you!

So anyone getting discouraged from starting their own blogs should know that in the big scheme of things, those who give the most tend to receive the most, too!

Have an amazing day!

Blogging is indeed never meant to be “easy” but it does get a lot easier if you are passionate in what you write about. Without it, it’s a passport to failure.

Blogging takes more than just writing great articles alone, you shouldn’t get stuck in the “if I build it, they will come” mentality. As what Garry has advised above, networking is equally important, if not the most important.

Agree with you that it is trial and error. I don’t have much knowledge in php, css, mysql etc etc. But I don’t force anyone to teach me but instead I do it my self because I believe experience is the best teacher.

I actually don’t think that is necessary to know PHP or HTML before you start blogging. You can learn while you are blogging.

Ok, fair enough… but what are you doing to do when you break something? Call a witch doctor to fix it? Pay someone $100 or $200 dollars to fix something that you could have done yourself in a matter of minutes? It is VERY important to learn basic PHP and HTML skills before our DURING your first few months of blogging. ;)

Hi Garry, I’ve only had one really bad blogging mishap, and you helped me through it. Since that time, I’ve taken tons of php, html, xhtml and css tutorials and I’m confident I can fix anything that happens.

Though I don’t blog for money, I have built a big following and it will serve me well when I publish my two upcoming mind warping psychotic insanity horror novels which will be done soon…LOL! No matter what a person works for in life, blogging is a fantastic tool to help propel their dreams and is so easily adapted to fit their particular needs.

I’d like to point out that no matter what type of blog a person has, it is the MMO techniques that will spawn its growth. I use MMO ideas on a non-MMO site. It’s interesting that more unrelated bloggers don’t incorporate SEO and other ideas into their blogs. You don’t have to have a marketing blog to use the ideas!

Thanks Garry, great post as usual!

Thanks Garry, good post. I’m just getting started myself, and am trying to help a few friends get going in the process as well. So far I’ve got to say that WordPress has been the #1 most valuable tool (I’ve had more success in 2 months with WP than I did in 3 YEARS with Joomla, though to be honest I didn’t work very hard on it with Joomla because the tools were a pain in the butt!). However I also have to say that I feel I’ve learned a few good basics from your site the last few days since I found it, so I’m very grateful so far, especially for the steer-clear from John Chow message :p

to be honest I have learnt quite a few things here, but I habe issues to contend with and probably argue about, first of all I am fully aware that starts from small begginings also there are certain factors ou need to but in place for a blog to succeed, I have aske Mr. Garry on his site and other sister sites how do I insert an autoresponder I use getresponse and no one seems to answer me perhaps this will be a good time for some one to tell me what to do

“…Never break trust with your readership and always treat them with the highest level of love and respect. …”

How true this is. It’s your readers who decide how well your blog grow and eventually how much traffic you’re gonna get. They are also responsible for what conversations take place on your blog. In short your readers are responsible for any kind activity and interaction on your blog.
