My Opinions on The Acer Aspire One 8.9-inch Mini Laptop
I purchased the Acer Aspire One today and all in all, it is pretty cool. I went ahead and purchased it at Walmart and paid a little more than if I purchassed it online. Walmart has a 15 day return policy, and also the store is located just about two miles away. So I figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pay a little more and purchase it locally. The system is very cool and I enjoy it a lot. However, there are some things that I don’t like about it as well.
The keyboard is very small. I knew that going into this, but I think that it is a little smaller than it really needs to be. The second thing that I don’t like about the Acer Aspire One is the screen is also very small. Once again, I knew this going into it, but just like the keyboard, the screen is much smaller than it needs to be.
The screen itself is surrounded by about 3/4 inch plastic shell, which to me means that the screen could have potentially been increased to about 10 Inches or more, rather than 8.9 Inches, if the surrounding shell wasn’t so thick. To me, it seems like a lot of wasted space and something that was overlooked when they were designing it. The computer is amazingly small and I can’t see that it would have been all that difficult to squeeze in a 10 Inch screen.
One additional item that I don’t like about the Acer is the touchpad configuration. The left click button is on the left side of the touchpad and the right click button is on the right. Most touchpads have the buttons located below, thus easily allowing you to click using the sides or your thumbs. All in all I am very happy to have purchased the computer because I have 15 days to really try it out. These are all elements that I can easily adapt to, but I am curious to discover if there is really a need to adapt, or if there is a different computer that will suit my needs better.
With that said, I am going to go ahead and order a second mini laptop while I continue to try the Acer. The second computer that I am going to order is the MSI Wind U100-279US 10-Inch Mini Laptop. The reasons why I am interested in trying out this laptop is to compared it to the Acer Aspire One is becuase the keyboard is much larger, it conforms very closely to the standard size keyboard. The second reason is because the screen is an inch larger than the Acer. The third reason is because the touchpad configuration has the left / right click buttons below the touchpad rather than on the sides.
The forth reason is because the MSI Wind U100 can be upgraded to receive a total of 2GB of memory. As you know, the maximum amount memory you can have in the Acer is 1.5GB. Having the extra 512 MB of memory makes me feel a little better because I know that I could upgrade to Windows Vista if I wanted to. In my previous post, I included a nice video review of the Acer Aspire One that I found on YouTube. Below is a video review of the MSI Wind U100. I think that you’ll enjoy watching it.
So do stay tuned with my journey to find the perfect “Blogging in Bed” laptop. Also, I would love to get your opinions on both the MSI Wind in the comments also also I would enjoy getting your opinions on my other post that talks about the Acer Aspire One.

Yeah the location of the buttons was something I remembered that bugged me about it. The Dell Mini 9 has the buttons on the bottom like normal (albeit smaller). The Mini 9 has a small harddrive, only 16GB, but its solid state so no moving parts. And I don’t need much storage for how I will be using this, which I think is similar to you. I’ve only played with it a few hours but so far I really like it.

Nothing wrong with a solid state drive at all. I have never had a computer with one but I hear that they are lightening fast. Thanks for the info John, I am going to look more closely at the Dell for sure. Did you get a good deal one yours?

I have looked at the Dell as well. 16GB solid state drive is heaps big enough for the style of notebook it is. One plus is that it has no fan at all, none is needed so it is completely quiet (good for in bed I guess)
The Dells keyboard is a little strange, the keys are layout weird near the O,P,L keys – still the price is good.
Have a look at the Eee PC (by asus I think) they have the usual 8.9 models but also a 10inch one as well. Dell has a 12 inch version now too!
I have tried the first Eee PC with a 7inch screen, running Linux – it worked well but was just too small – screen and mouse pad.
The 1GB ram is Microsofts limitation on licensing terms. I guess they don’t want XP to look too good compared to Vista. People have put Vista on these Netbooks but they run dog slow so don’t try it Gary.

These EEEPCs are horribly small, but the 10inch ones should really be good for portable blogging

Just took this computer on a trip to Europe and it was great. Small and light enough to carry around, but with a nice size keyboard so that typing was easy. The screen is of excellent quality. The battery life is terrific.
