Need Traffic? Forget Google and Just Become a Dennis To Society

So everyone and their grandmother has already wrote this post once before INCLUDING MYSELF. But something tells me that not many people follow this advice. Do you want traffic to your blog? Do you want to score traffic quickly and not even have to depend on a search engine, such as Google, to supply it?

Are you ready for the magic trick?

Commenting…

hmm… what a concept.

If you comment on other blogs, such as my blog (hint hint) you will get traffic to your blog.

Dennis Edell is a prime example of a blogger who takes FULL ADVANTAGE of this tactic. Truly this guy is a class act.

Many bloggers understand that traffic can be had when you comment on other blogs. So many blogger do just that, but their comments totally suck! I mean, the comments are on the verge of being classified as spam.

“Hey, nice post… this is my read of the day!” Is an example of a low grade comment that doesn’t contribute anything and clearly the purpose of the comment is to just leave a URL behind. I can’t stand comments like that. It is clear that the person who left the comment cares NOTHING about the article, my blog or the community within the blog.

Then you have the rare bloggers such as Dennis Edell. This dude, I don’t know what he does, or how he does it. But if you surf around a lot of the make money online blogs, Internet Marketing blogs and general blogging tips blogs, you’ll quickly see that he is usually top of the commenting list.

And there is a difference between Dennis and other bloggers who are trying to score traffic. The key difference is that people like Dennis deserve the traffic because they are working their ass off to score it.

Every comment that Dennis has left on my blog either contributed to the quality of the content on the page, sparked up additional interest among readers, thus creating more comments, or provided me with feedback or infromation that leads me to add to the discussion myself.

In other words, Dennis actually reads the articles prior to commenting. It’s amazing really. He must be a super fast reader, very organized, a robot, or all of the above.

Now I haven’t talked to Dennis about his traffic stats or things like that, in fact… he has no idea that I am even writing this post, but I’d like to beleive that his blog has totally increased traffic a lot over the last 30 days. And if you’d like my guess, I would attribute a lot of that increase to how much he stay involved with other blogs.

So with that said, if you want traffic to your blog, leave a comment on the blogs that you read. Also, its one thing to work on getting traffic to your blog, it is a complete different ball game KEEPING TRAFFIC.

If your blog isn’t ready to accept people, then don’t waste your time marketing it until its ready to be seen. You can get all the traffic in the world to your blog and it won’t matter one bit unless you can KEEP THE TRAFFIC.

Write excellent posts, be accessible to your readers, visit the blogs of your readers, etc… you do all these things and a few more, then you’ll start to see the ball rolling.

Anyway, I want to thank Dennis for all the hard work he has done commenting on my blog, if you need a good blog subscriber, be sure to check out his blog titled, Direct Sales Web Marketing and tell Dennis that you’re looking for a good commenter for your blog and I’d bet the farm that Dennis will become your #1 reader and subscriber.

P.S. Dennis, you should write an eBook titled, How To Become Top Commenter and Win the Blogosphere Over in 30 Days and then sell it on ClickBank for $19.95. ;)

This is my comment on your blog post about commenting too! :)

Another piece of advice is to not go to blogs of the same niche and blog the same opinion over and over again.

For example don’t go to 100 political blogs and say BUSH SUCKS! on all of them. It will get tiresome quickly.

@ Tracy – very very important point! Especially as Garry pointed out, in the IM/AM/MMO/Blogging niches you WILL come across the same posts over and over again, and sometimes multiples in the same day! If you read a good amount of blogs.

Y’all know what though? You CAN leave constructive non-repeating “spam” comments on every “same” article with just a little creativity. ;)

Hey, nice post. Just kidding. Well, actually, it was a nice post. I comment on at least 5 blogs per day. It’s one of the best, cheapest ways to build traffic.

In fact, you should go into your Google Alerts and set an ‘alert’ for your target keyword (ie: ‘internet marketing’) and set it for ‘blog’. Google will then deliver several different blog posts to your e-mail inbox every day. You can then go right out and comment on those nice blog posts!

I didn’t mention this in the article because I just remembered it here. There are tons of blog posts that don’t have comments. Usually people avoid commenting on these ones because they believe that they are DEAD and don’t get traffic. That really isn’t completely true. If you were to leave a comment on posts that don’t have a lot of comments, it actually benefits you more for traffic compared to leaving a comment on a post already with a lot of comments.

If your comment is one of the first comments, it is the first thing people see immediately after reading the article. In most cases blog writers don’t properly close their article in a way that encourages an action from the people reading it.

When that happens, usually one of the first things people do after reading an article is read the first comment and then click over to their blog. That is one of the reasons why it is important to be the first to comment on any blog post.

Dennis Edell Wrote a Comment: Subscribed to comments via email

@ Garry – another excellent point! 9 outa 10 times the first comments will get the bulk of the traffic if it is a non-spammy comment. Leave a garbage comment “because you’re first” and it can backfire TWICE in the same area.

Not only will no one visit your blog then, but sub-consciously the other readers will then label you as useless, blog and all….you will be put on their NEVER visit, NEVER recommend list.

There is another point to make though to be sure you’re not inv fact wasting time commenting on “empty posts”……this takes about 30 seconds of “research”.

1. Scroll a couple pages. 40-50 posts with 0 comments means the only attention you’re likely to grab is the blog owner…and maybe not even them.

2. If you arrive 2-3 days after a post was published and 0 comments, that’s red flag number one, so you may want to repeat step one. If there are comments throughout other posts, then it’s a judgment call.

Garry also briefly touched on the “call to action” at the end of a post. Not to go too OT but this in itself is a MUST if you want comments on YOUR blog. I’m not ashamed to say, I believe I’ve mastered this as well; it will be a separate post though, as I do it a little differently then most. ;)

Dennis reminds me of Courtney Tuttle in his “early” days. He’s EVERYWHERE! However, he’s also incredibly personable and funny to boot.

In other words, I’m glad to say I know Dennis now because some day, he’s going to be a regular Garry Conn! :)

First, I want to say great work on a very informative blog! I have been doing research about how to blog online to make money for some time now and this is the 3rd time in 2 days I have been directed to your blog.
About getting traffic to your blog, what if bloggers are not your target? What if your main target is regular consumers who just use the internet to find information? How do you get them to your blog?
Thanks
Scott

Great post Conn man, commenting is one of the BEST ways to meet folks, get traffic, and get noticed. I used to comment quite a bit…but lately have been far too busy to do it as much as I used to.

It’s all good though…I see a few dudes out here working hard on those comments and it’s good stuff!

Not only can commenting on blogs increase your visibility and traffic, it can help with SEO if you comment on dofollow blogs :-)

However, it’s just plain rude to comment without reading the post. I decent comment should ask for more info, add new info or futher the discussion somehow.

OK Garry, that was 50 cents per word, right?

Duuuude, holy crap! I nearly got instant lock-jaw when I saw this post in my email! LOL You have no idea how good this made me feel!!

It’s funny you mention the ebook; I’ve had several “joke” to me about it over the past couple months, and I just figured they were messin’ with me; hmm…..LOL

Yes, ALL my stats from subscribers on down jumped SIGNIFICANTLY due to commenting properly…solely due to commenting. (Read again what Garry pointed out as properly ;) )

@ Hussein – thanks!

@ Collin – take the time buddy, it works!

@ Monty – awesome tip! Thanks!

@ Kathy – woohoo! A likeness to Garry! Now there’s a compliment. ;)

Plus, if I may speak for my gender, it’s always spirit lifting when a woman that hasn’t seen you nekkid, still finds you funny. LMAO!

You make me smile too. ;)

@ Scott – coming from a direct sales background (and who my blog is primarily pointed at), it’s all about your keywords and SEO…”regular consumers” are coming through the search engines 99% of the time.

Perhaps a little social networking also.

@ John – that’s exactly right. I dunno how many times I’ve said it myself…more often then not, comments not only add to the conversation, but tun out better then the original post! Not to mention how often I’ve come up with entirely new posts, just from comments I’ve read!

Speaking of which…..I actually responded to almost all of the commenters here, which turned into a really long comment (especially Garry’s).

Yes, even longer then it is now. LOL

I’ve decided instead to turn those into a whole new post, with link-backs to all involved!

I’ll be sure to come back here and post the link (of course those that can’t wait can always subscribe and get it first hand ;) ). Hehe just kidding.

On the good posts like this one, I often read all the comments.
I have been doing that since I read a newspaper article on John Chow in the Vancouver Province Newspaper in April 2008, and have been researching afiliate marketing and blogging since then. (I need to do to one of John’s PHO meetings, as I also live in Richmond, BC)

I would say that about 90% of the great blogs out there, I discovered by reading comments, and visiting their blogs just to check them out.

This is time consuming, but the rewards in my mind are enormous, plus you get to meet a lot of great people online.

Gary,
I certainly can vouch for what you have said about Dennis. In fact last night I was asking myself how does this guy do it. He seems practically on every blog that I visit and top commentator at that. Almost everyone of those blogs he is way ahead of the second top commentator which just means he is honestly contributing. And boy does he have lots to comment. Good job Dennis if you are reading this but I’m sure you will be since you’ve become the super super commentator that we’ve come to know.

Mark – I left a bunch here (more just added) and always over at my place if you wish to drop by, but here comes a couple really good ones ;)

Entrecard – all the EC naysayers regarding “bad traffic” blah blah blah, have no clue about it’s real potential and power. It’s my NUMBER ONE place for finding related blogs/bloggers, networking, commenting, etc., in any niche I’m interested in.

Do not stop – You comment on 20 blogs every 3 months and it will take a loooooong time to do anything.

CommentLuv plugin – forget do follow (or find both). For immediate traffic, CL and a catchy title will bring them in by the truckload!

Tick the subscribe to comments plugin box – if the blog does not have one, contact the owner to add one.

Yes, it will bring in a crap-load of email; deal with it. You WANT to be a repeat commenter on the same posts if other comments leave the opportunity, especially if it’s the blog owner.

Garry mentioned something about speed reading lol, you will master it; trust me. :)

Good enough for now? ;) I wasted a whole day yesterday, got some catching up to do……

Hey, nice post… this is my read of the day!

I’m sorry Garry – I couldn’t resist!

I have to admit I’m VERY guilty of the short comment – but not because I’m trying to game the system but because a short and sweet comment is how I’d actually respond face to face.

I’d LOVE to see Dennis put a book out on how he’s earned his Black Belt in Commenting!

I should say that there isn’t anything wrong with short comments… its just the comments that were done on purpose in an effort to plant a link on someone’s blog. Most bloggers such as yourself are very keen on sniffing out a junk comment VS a genuine one. ;)

I agree that commenting really works, I have gotten in touch and formed relationships with other bloggers both because of their commenting on my site or my commenting on theirs.

Also, I second the nomination for Dennis for commenter of the year, I wish I had time to comment like he does (long insightful comments on many many sites each and every day)!
