I agree that commenting really works, I have gotten in touch and formed relationships with other bloggers both because of their commenting on my site or my commenting on theirs.

Also, I second the nomination for Dennis for commenter of the year, I wish I had time to comment like he does (long insightful comments on many many sites each and every day)!

I should say that there isn't anything wrong with short comments... its just the comments that were done on purpose in an effort to plant a link on someone's blog. Most bloggers such as yourself are very keen on sniffing out a junk comment VS a genuine one. ;)

Hey, nice post… this is my read of the day!

I'm sorry Garry - I couldn't resist!

I have to admit I'm VERY guilty of the short comment - but not because I'm trying to game the system but because a short and sweet comment is how I'd actually respond face to face.

I'd LOVE to see Dennis put a book out on how he's earned his Black Belt in Commenting!

Mark - I left a bunch here (more just added) and always over at my place if you wish to drop by, but here comes a couple really good ones ;)

Entrecard - all the EC naysayers regarding "bad traffic" blah blah blah, have no clue about it's real potential and power. It's my NUMBER ONE place for finding related blogs/bloggers, networking, commenting, etc., in any niche I'm interested in.

Do not stop - You comment on 20 blogs every 3 months and it will take a loooooong time to do anything.

CommentLuv plugin - forget do follow (or find both). For immediate traffic, CL and a catchy title will bring them in by the truckload!

Tick the subscribe to comments plugin box - if the blog does not have one, contact the owner to add one.

Yes, it will bring in a crap-load of email; deal with it. You WANT to be a repeat commenter on the same posts if other comments leave the opportunity, especially if it's the blog owner.

Garry mentioned something about speed reading lol, you will master it; trust me. :)

Good enough for now? ;) I wasted a whole day yesterday, got some catching up to do......

@ Garry - another excellent point! 9 outa 10 times the first comments will get the bulk of the traffic if it is a non-spammy comment. Leave a garbage comment "because you're first" and it can backfire TWICE in the same area.

Not only will no one visit your blog then, but sub-consciously the other readers will then label you as useless, blog and all....you will be put on their NEVER visit, NEVER recommend list.

There is another point to make though to be sure you're not inv fact wasting time commenting on "empty posts"......this takes about 30 seconds of "research".

1. Scroll a couple pages. 40-50 posts with 0 comments means the only attention you're likely to grab is the blog owner...and maybe not even them.

2. If you arrive 2-3 days after a post was published and 0 comments, that's red flag number one, so you may want to repeat step one. If there are comments throughout other posts, then it's a judgment call.

Garry also briefly touched on the "call to action" at the end of a post. Not to go too OT but this in itself is a MUST if you want comments on YOUR blog. I'm not ashamed to say, I believe I've mastered this as well; it will be a separate post though, as I do it a little differently then most. ;)
