Jeremy Schoemaker Doesn’t Like SEO Experts

Why doesn’t Jeremy Schoemaker like SEO Experts? Well.. the story is actually very interesting and in a way, I am glad I caught wind of this one, because I can totally add to some interesting history with the little bitch rant event that took place on ShoeMoney’s blog on Jan 16th, 2008 in his post titled, Why I do not like 95% of SEO Experts.

A few months ago, I was getting paid to write content for a guy named, Gavin Mountford, who at the time was promoting the hell out of uVME. I got paid a pretty decent chunk of change and converted the domain name, www.howdoimakemoneyonline.com to write the content that promoted uVme under his chain of command.

About a month later, my contract ended, and Gavin caught wind of a domain name that was being listed for sale at SitePoint. The domain name was www.ryanshamus.com. This domain name was, at the time, registered to an individual named, Ryan Shamus. As it turned out, Ryan sold his soul for rock and roll and parted ways with his own namesake for $1500 USD.

I haven’t heard much from Ryan for a few months up until recently when he sent out a mass email to people in his address book (I was included in this mailing):

ryan-shamus-email-01

The email basically announced the little bio / history about himself and then he further explained about the new domain name that he’ll be publishing on:

ryan-shamus-email-03

Apparently, Ryan wanted to get a quick blast of exposure and one of his first published articles was something that caught Jeremy Schoemaker’s attention because of a little snippet of text that was included:

shoemoney-title

The snippet of text set ShoeMoney off into publishing a rant style post as mentioned above. The drama doesn’t end as there have now been numerous rant responses to Shoe’s post, one of which is included below:

josh-gardner

It amazes me how one story can lead to another within the atmosphere of the blogosphere. The more I blog and the more people I get to know, the more this all seems like a big soap opera or a typical day in the life of a 9th grader.

ShoeMoney stresses some real valid points. One is the fact that he has mentioned many times that he doesn’t claim to be an SEO expert.

The aspect of this story that interests me the most is seeing the visual big picture on the power of link baiting. Basically, in this case, did Ryan Shamus plot and plan this marketing scheme: one, starting with the mass email sent to many high profile bloggers and two, writing content that criticizes the few within the list with the goal of pissing them off. Did he predict that they would blast out links and free advertising to his new site?

You be the judge. Regardless of what the true intentions were for Ryan Shamus, one thing is very noticeably clear, if you don’t have the money to advertise on an A Lister’s blog, then you can probably get free coverage by simply pissing them off. Secondly, I have always believed that bad breath is better than no breath. If Ryan had full intention of scoring this level of intention, then he completely pulled off a very successful marketing / link baiting scheme.

    Hey Garry!

Great article here (although for the record, the blog went for $2500!). Anyway, long story short, this has been one wild week, to say the least.

The new launch has gone great (115 subscribers and well over 25k pageviews in first 9 days), and all due to a post I wrote to make an example out of some well known bloggers. I had no idea it would turn into a massive piss fest, but hey, it makes things exciting, right?

Take care and I’ll be back =D

  2. Garry Conn Says:

You sold your soul to rock and roll for $2500 dollars!!! That is your name dude? You must have been really hurting for the cash. Tell me more about that situation. What is the story behind you selling RyanShamus.com for $2500 dollars?

  3. Ryan Says:

The cash came in handy, but I certainly wasn’t hurting for it at the time. I’m sure you remember, that right after the PR update, blogs became the hot ticket item over on the Sitepoint auctions, and I simply decided that I had other priorities in my life at that time, and I thought I would give mine a shot at selling. Let me clearly say that I honestly didn’t expect a purchase (due to the fact that the blog was semi-personally named (shamus isn’t my real last name). Regardless, I wanted to give it a try, and compared to stats behind similar blogs that were for sale, I decided $2500 B.I.N. was fair.

It sold in less than 24 hours - and it was pretty exciting! The new owner is a super cool guy, and he brings a whole new set of skills to the table. Although I must say I’m sorry to see the old theme go…as the new one isn’t the prettiest (just being honest Gavin!!), however the content is top notch, so that’s what really matters.

(On a side note, after selling ryanshamus, I started a toy blog that I sold for $1200, and it was only 27 days old - now that was exciting too!)

Moving forward, my true passion is helping new bloggers and webmasters with SEO’ing their sites, and that’s why I have the SEONoobs.Com blog - I’ve got some real forward momentum going with it, and I plan to take it forward.

Anyway, I could babble on, but I’ll leave it at that. Let me know if you have any more questions!

  4. Garry Conn Says:

    Ryan,

That’s good stuff man… thanks for taking the time to share with me and my readers. Keep me in the loop with SEONoobs.com. I can see that you have already gained a little interest from the Shoe man.

I would love to learn more about your SEO experiences. What kind of background do you have in the business? How in what ways can you help bloggers find more success with designing and developing search engine friendly blogs / websites? Do you have a portfolio of your previous work that you can share? (hyperlinks would be great)

Since you are an SEO expert, where does your expertise stand in the SEM business? Do you have any customer testimonials that I could read? I would love to learn more.
