Recent Posts From My Favorite Blogs
The blogroll can be one of the most abused systems on a blog. Many people use a blogroll for the purpose of exchanging links in an attempt to try to score more backlinks to their own blog. The original intention of a blogroll was to showcase the other blogs that you really and truly enjoy reading.
Garry Conn dot Com no longer has a blogroll. Blogrolls are very ineffective and because of how much they get abused across the board on many other blogs, I choose to no longer have one.
Instead, I have something better. I have created a section on my site called, “Recent Posts From My Favorite Blogs”. This is by far much better than a traditional blogroll.

Instead of having an ineffective blogroll that no one clicks, I have created a syndicated RSS mash up of all my favorite blogs that I enjoy reading. If you would like to be included in this mashup just drop me a comment, email, or IM and tell me about your blog. If it becomes a blog that I personally enjoy reading, I will include it in my mashup.
You can not buy your way into this listing. I will not trade or barter link exchanges with you. If you want in on this mashup, you have to work hard and host a blog that not only interests me, but will interest my readers.
If you want to be included in this mashup, again, drop me a comment or contact me via email or IM and I will at a minimum visit your blog and check it out. Eventually if it sits well with me and it is something that I think will help my community of readers grow, I will include it in the mashup.
Who Is Included In The Mashup?
Good question. I will happily tell you who I have included so far in the mashup. They are as follows:
- Mark Sierra from MeAndMyDrum.com.
- Kyle Eslick from KylesCove.com.
- Christine Senter from ChristineSenter.com.
- David Cooley from CyberCoder.net.
- Mike and Tish from BlogsWeLuv.com.
- Brown Baron from BrownBaron.com.
- Tish from ChattieKat.com.
- Simon Barker from Zath.co.uk.
Will The Mashup Grow and Expand
Another excellent question. Yes! I will be constantly searching for great quality blogs to include into this mashup syndication. Also at this current time, the blogs listed above are only a fraction of the blogs that I enjoy reading. If you like reading my blog, then you may also enjoy knowing about the blogs I enjoy reading. Most all of the blogs have allowed me to grow and become an expert and professional blogger.
Can I Subscribe To This Mashup?
Yes! You can easily subscribe to this mashup feed. It is an RSS syndication and you can easily add it to your favorite RSS reader such as Google Reader. The mashup syndication is broadcasted using FeedBurner, here is the link to subscribe:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/GarryConnsFavoriteBlogs
I Don’t Want To Be Included!
If you don’t want my readers to visit your blog or read your posts, that is fine with me. I can drop you from the mashup which will make room for other people who could use the added exposure on the Internet. Simply drop me a comment or contact me directly and let me know that you want to be excluded from the mashup and I will remove you right away.
This Looks Cool, But How Does It Work?
This mashup is very simple. I have collected the RSS feeds from my personal favorite blogs that I enjoy reading on a daily basis and mashed them up into one broadcast RSS feed. This broadcast syndicates the ten most recent posts published by the authors in the mashup. Immediately as authors publish content on their blogs, an excerpt will be made available live on my site. If the included author allows for the full feed to be displayed, it will be available in the RSS feed provided live in the broadcast RSS mashup.
This mashup replaces my traditional blogroll as I have found that blogrolls are very abused systems of blogs. I have also seen that blogrolls are an ineffective means for displaying blogs that people enjoys reading. The “Recent Posts From My Favorite Blogs” section corrects the problem of abuse as well as helping increase readership and interest for the authors included in my mashup.
If you have any additional comments, questions or suggestions, I want to invite you to leave a comment or contact me directly.
Mashup Source Updates
You can bookmark this page as I will be adding comments to it as I add to the mashup. If you are ever curious and want to know which blogs are included, I invite you to check the comments below as I will be adding updates with newly added blogs.

Thats an excellent idea - it’s new and unique. I’ll have to see about doing something similar on my site.

great idea Garry !
I too wasn’t loving the blogrolls: I very rarely note them on other blogs, so none of my blogs has one. But adding an “Article roll” is something totally different, that’s a direct hook to good content !
Excellent idea, I must implement it too.
ciao

That is great news Alex. I am glad you like it.
I haven’t covered this yet in a post. But I will tell you this now. The blue middle column titled, “Bloggers Message Board Recent Posts” is just that… every time someone creates a “New Topic” in BMB it will appear here on GCDC.

MarcoRichter.net has been added to the mashup. Here is a quote from his about me page:
You’ll learn some pretty cool SEO stuff from Marco Richter.

It’s a great idea to replace blogrolls and a real honour to be included in your Favorite Blog feed! Cheers Garry!

Hi, Garry! It is an honor to be in your mashup! Thank you!
Date/Time: 12-13-2007 21:38:17 Comment #7445
I give you total props for this, Garry. I agree 100% with ya that blogrolls basically became glorified link exchanges that are as abused as that outdated system. This actually delivers appropriate content to someone who’s looking for it, which, gasp… is what a blogroll was originally intended for. I just subscribed and look forward to reading your favorites.

That is pretty cool Andrew, I might actually put up a FeedBurner Chicklet, this feed already has five subscribers. That’s pretty cool!
Date/Time: 12-14-2007 16:11:04 Comment #7480
I’ve now subscribed, means I can remove a few separate feeds I had, plus I’ve also got the content of some other great blogs! Cheers!

Today I am pleased to announce a new addition to my RSS mashup. Readers and subscribers will now have easy access to reading the content and posts of my good friend Thor Schrock. His content is very helpful for inspiring entrepreneurs, I am sure that you will find what he writes to be very useful and informative. It’s a great addition to my favorite blogs I read.
You can visit his blog here.
You can view his RSS feed directly here.
If you would like to read all the content from my most favorite blogs including Thor Schrock, simply subscribe to the feed of my most favorite blogs here.
If you would like to have your feed considered for inclusion, feel free to drop me a comment and tell me about your blog. If it happens to become a blog that I enjoy reading a lot and feel that my readers would enjoy reading it too, I very well may add it to my list.

I just blogrolled you - is that wrong?
Date/Time: 1-4-2008 13:45:33 Comment #8442
Hey Todd, thanks man… no there is nothing wrong with adding links that you like into your blogroll. The whole purpose of the blogroll is the share links that you enjoy with your readers. If my blog happens to be a site that you enjoy and something you feel your readers will enjoy too, then adding it is wonderful and I thank you for that.
Date/Time: 1-4-2008 13:49:37 Comment #8443
yes I enjoy your blog…
your system is probably better than a blogroll though
