Should DMOZ.org Be DeRanked From The Google Index?
Seriously, I think DMOZ.org should totally be deranked from the Google Index. Think about it, if it is so impossible to get new links added into the DMOZ.org directory, then to me that would seem like their database of links would have hardly any value. I am sure there is a certain value to them; but I wouldn’t think that there would be as much value in them as Google and other search engines place in them.
I don’t visit DMOZ.org all that often, but when I do, typically many of the listings I click on point to dead pages, 404’s or domain names that are no longer hosted but now set up on park pages. In other words, the database of links that DMOZ.org has in their directory are old, outdated and provide hardly any use to end users. The only interest in DMOZ.org are the people who know about the power of backlinks and who try to game their directory.
DMOZ.org serves no purpose to today’s standards, many of the portals that once used the Open Directory Project now use Google CSE such as AOL, Dell, Charter, and many other more popular portals. If that is the case, they why or what reason does Google have to still place value in the links in DMOZ.org? The Open Directory Project is run by volunteer editors who have this artifical power that makes them feel superior to others while they accept certain cash offers and bribes to get links added.

I posted about this recently myself after noticing how crappy all the sites under my niche are (http://www.johnisfit.com/2008/08/19/an-example-of-clutter-and-a-request-for-help/). I have not completed the analysis but early results show that the vast majority of the sites are utter crap that haven’t been updated for years.

Suprisingly I was able to get my site listed in less than a month in DMOZ earlier this summer.

Who did you pay and how much?
~~ joking ~~
I tried long ago to get a site in their and to no avail. I haven’t been to that directory in years, and I would agree that it is outdated. Your comment about how much was paid may not be too far off. There has been lots of frustrations posted on various forums.
Hmm, CommentLuv was working, now it seems to be having problems again. Well, I know it is actually my problem, but it seemed like a work around had been found.

I red this post and have thought of it. Then later on I went to look at info about one site I liked to http://whois.domaintools.com and checked out also my site. There I have noticed on the page this: DMOZ: 1 listings . I never submitted my only site into dmoz so I am not sure how they do it, I never visited dmoz.org either, I am sure I will forget about it tomorrow unless they will help me somehow in the mean time!

I did not have to pay or bribe the DMOZ editor to get in, but rather made sure the category had an active editor and emailed him (without response), but in less than a month my Google Android site was in.

[...] end users. Companies such as Google still place a lot of value in DMOZ. Personally for me, I think Google should de-rank and de-value DMOZ. If you’d like to learn more about DMOZ, check out the recent article titled, Everything You [...]
