Submitting To Digg Is Like Having Friends With Benefits

First off I guess I might need to define the slang term of “having a friend with benefits” as that might not be a term widly known. A friend with benefits is a friendship of the opposite sex (or same gender if you’re gay)  where you’re simply casual friends but have sex.

Can you believe that Wikipedia has an article on this! LOL!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casual_relationship

Ok, so now having that off our chests let me explain my thoughts on how submitting to Digg is like having a friend with benefits.

Many people consider Digg to be the magic trick or solution towards getting traffic to their blog. But there is a problem with this theory as it proves to be inaccurate. You see, in order to get traffic from Digg, you really need to grow and develop a community establishment with the people in Digg.

If you don’t have friends within Digg to help vote up your submissions, then really submitting into Digg is not much different than going to Blogger.com and creating a brand new blog and promoting the content there with a new post.

In other words, if you submit content into Digg and you don’t have a friend base, not many people are going to see the submission and vote. Your submission will appear in Digg’s upcoming section but will quickly get buried by newer submitted items.

Digg’s upcoming sections is pretty much the “Friend With Benefits” analogy. You see having a blog is very much like having a profile in Digg. You have to have a base and a following in order to get the desired actions you want.

The only advantage you have with Digg that you don’t have with a blog is the “Upcoming Section” but even that only lasts for a few hours.

Really there isn’t a magic trick to getting traffic, and for sure the solution isn’t in turning to Digg. Digg really only works well if you have friends within the Digg community and even still, not all your friends will see your submissions and even if they do, they might not vote.

I have around 100 mutual friends in Digg. Most of them are people who read my blog and came from my blog because I asked them to join and connect with me in Digg. I don’t have that many friends that originated from Digg.com. So really, Digg.com doesn’t do much for me at all with traffic.

BYOB - which stands for bring your own beer, the same is true with Digg, but instead it’s BYOD or BYOF or BYODF - which stands for bring your own Diggs, bring your own friends, or bring your own Digg friends.

The key to getting traffic still remains in writing really good content, such as this lame post, and eventually people will StumbleUpon your posts (no pun intended — well maybe just a little) and like you for the person you are and subscribe to your blog. :)

Anyway, there is my good ol’  4:53 A.M. post, for now I am going to bed. LOL!!!!

Garry,

You’re a smart guy and must say that over a period of time reading your insight into the human race I have gleaned a little bit of wisdom that has been absorbed.

I believe I would call you a friend.

But let me make this perfectly clear! There are NO BENEFITS!

LOL.

Rich

Nah, I’m messing around with ya…..

You should really make up your mind and then come to terms with your sexuality. When you do, simply blog about it and then submit it into Stumble. :)

hey garry,
All the social networks are a great way of getting your site seen.. Not only do they get website more traffic but they also get backlinks when people write about one of the submitted posts in there…

My domain is banned from Digg… why? Because someone submitted it a couple dozen times to Digg pretending to be me. The system is obviously flawed very badly.

I think that there is a solution to this problem. I think it’s a matter of how hard you’re willing to work to get your account reinstated. If it was me, I wouldn’t work too hard. :)

I need to get some Digg friends and I don’t have the time. I do try to use stumbleupon and it’s working fairly well.

In the terms of friends, benefits, traffic, or all of the above? :)

Joking… but I do agree too. I get much more traffic from StumbleUpon than I do from Digg.

hahaha I actually don’t know if I have any friends in stumbleupon. I do have large traffic, sometimes I get about 650 uniques from them.
I guess it’s because stumbleupon is a little more random than digg.

Stumble is great.. I have made some pretty good friends there. For me I am really starting to take a liking to Sphinn. Most of the people and the content found on that network is right up my alley. :)

Digg is a beast to tackle for sure. I feel like i am getting closer to cracking it, i’ve been noticing a few of my Digg friends, finally scoring a post on the FP. Which is very cool. Maybe im not too far behind.

I haven’t really used digg too much, but really should. Isn’t it better to have someone else submit your articles than to submit them yourself? I see what you mean about building a community and how that is the way to get diggs. Can I get herpes from digg? hahaha…great post:)
