The Pepperjam Store Builder Contest Information

This contest has been moved to PepperjamNETWORK’s site.

Please follow this link to enter into the contest or to get more information:

http://www.pepperjamnetwork.com/blog/2008/11/05/announcing-the-pepperjam-store-builder-contest-with-2000-in-prize-money-exclusive-to-pepperjam-network-affiliates/

The Pepperjam Store Builder is a very simple and easy program to work with. Literally in less than five minutes you can have a full and functional online store on your web site. This is the same thing that people were paying thousands of dollars to have on their own web site ten years ago. Win cash just by building your own Pepperjam Store. 25 people will automatically win, only 3 have joined! This is your chance to score some money and learn more about Pepperjam. You are not too late!

A few days ago I wrote a post letting you know that I will be hosting a Pepperjam Store Builder contest. I spoke with Kris Jones again and the contest is live. Here is how it works:

The first 25 people who build a Pepperjam Store and submit a comment here on this post with the URL will automatically be enrolled into the contest and get $10 dollars added into their Pepperjam account. If you don’t have a store built, go build one! If you already have a store, review it and make any changes you feel necessary, doctor it up, etc… and then submit it in!

From there, Kris Jones will have Maura Goodwin and Mandy Foley judge your stores for creativity and quality. The person who has the best store will get $100 dollars added into their Pepperjam account. The five runner ups, will get an autographed copy of Kris Jones book titled, Search Engine Optimization.

Pretty simple huh? Now, the only thing that I want is small. In order to enroll, I need for you to either subscribe to my RSS feed, join my mailing list, or follow me on Twitter. That is all that is required. If you have already done all three, then just write something nice about me on your blog.

So are you guys ready to build some killer Pepperjam Stores and make some money? Are you ready to score $10 dollars just for doing that? Are you ready to score a free copy of Search Engine Optimization written by Kris Jones? Are you ready to have a chance at scoring $100 dollars? By the way, a few months ago, Kris Jones mailed me an autographed copy of his book, it is awesome. I suggest that you visit your bookstore or order it online today. I personally learned a lot reading his book and I am very thankful that he mailed me a copy. In my opinion, the book itself is well worth more than $100 dollars. It is one of my personal favorites.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are a first time commenter, your comment may go into moderation. Do not worry, I will approve and post your comment very shortly. Also, at times, when regular commenters add a URL into their comment, these comments can go into moderation as well. Once again, do not worry, I will approve your comment very shortly.

If you should have any comments or questions, please feel free to use the comment form below. Also, remember the first 25 people to submit their Pepperjam Store URL will be enrolled. Act quickly, but also consider the fact that you are going to be judged on your level of creativity and overall quality, there is a balance here in this strategy.

Good luck and enjoy the money and gifts direct from Kris Jones and his highly skilled and wonderful staff at PepperjamNetwork! It has truly been a pleasure working with these people and I look very much forward to the future continuing to do business with them.

P.S. If you haven’t joined PepperjamNetwork, you can do so by filling out this online application form.

Sad that I don’t know much designing. Do we need to have a seperate domain for the store?

Hi Hussein,

Same domain is fine. as long as it blends in with your current site and readership. Be creative and have fun with it. If you have a blog about clothing, then it would be best to set up a store that compliments your blog and your people who read it. Good luck and leave a comment with your URL if you when you enter.

3 Garry Conn { 10.27.08 at 1:06 am }

Also, it doesn’t really matter about the domain. For me, I look at the potential success of the store and would consider using my own blog to promote the store. Granted, anyone can have a free standing store and use other methods for promoting it. All of which aren’t really required in this contest. That was more in the lines of advice than anything.

Well I’ll try, but PepperJam has not been very fast on approvals. I’ve been waiting almost a week on a few programs with no word yet. Kind of hard to build a store without product partners.

Many of my sites are the Mr. Manly type, guns, hunting, automotive, classic cars…
So to meet the “Creativity” component of your testing score I thought that it might be good to use two of their programs, “Bigger Bras” and right under that I could put the Boca Java ad whose slogan is “Defining the Perfect Cup.”

I’ve got a PepperJam store running on my blog Huntingwith.com.
I could only see how to use one of my advertisers, Binoculars, but that’s OK for now because I recently wrote a post about Ultra Compact binoculars.

I want to add a couple of more products that I am approved for but they don’t seem to show up in the store list.

It’s still very early so I’ll wait until the team members wake up and get to work and I’ll have a chat with them. Guess they don’t work 18-20 hours per day like we do.

Now I think I have already subscribed to everything you do Garry, but I just hit the Newsletter subscribe again just in case, and I always say nice things about you. \grin/

Witness my post about How to Make a 125 Banner.

My store is up at HuntingWith.com.
Subscribed, nice things said.
For what it’s worth I just took a look at the tag cloud on my LinkMoney.org and Garry Conn is the largest size under WordPress.

Can we do a store on PepperJam but using eBay’s products too? I can’t seem to do it. I’d like to do it as I can easily do it with Amazon’s AStore (see example on my blog: http://www.kindle-zone.com/my-kindle-store)

If not, then I guess that PepperJam doesn’t have anything suitable for this site. Unless you have some good ideas :)

Hey everyone. I had some issues with my blog this morning. Yesterday, I decided to reactive my wp-super-cache plugin and unfortunately that had screwed things up. So all is back to normal and I look forward to checking out your Pepperjam Stores. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know!

Can anyone tell me how to use the store builder javascript within Wordpress?

I buila a test html and php page on a regular site and they worked fine but when I tried to put the code in a Wordpress page it just shows a blank area?!?

Do I need a plugin?

How can I use the feed link to show in Wordpress…I tried CARP buit still no joy?

Any tips greatly appreciated…..

10 Maura { 10.27.08 at 3:38 pm }

Hi Flustered,

We are currently working on some technology so that Store Builder can be easily integrated with Wordpress. This should be available soon- we’re working on it :)

There is a way to add Store Builder to Wordpress. One of our developers told me that if you go to the Theme Editor you can paste the code into the different sections..He said you will experience formatting issues, but it is possible. If you need me to be more specific, let me know and I’ll be more than happy to help.

@flustered

I put mine in one of the sidebar widgets, just copy and paste the code.

I did not try to do it in the regular message post area but it might work if you did it in the html compose method of data input.
Not sure, never tried it, but you wouldn’t hurt anything by trying.
If it don’t work just bag it.

You can see it at HuntingWith.com

@Garry,

WP-Super-Cache sucks if you ask me. I have tried it a half dozen times and each time ran into problems. When you make data entry mods or tweak the theme a little it gets all balled up.

I took it off all the sites I had tried it on. Besides I never saw any improvements in page load speed even when it was supposedly working correctly.

21 David Cooley { 10.30.08 at 11:03 am }

One thing to remember with stores like this, they are javascript.

This means they do not add to the content visible to search engines. So when you create a page that has pretty much just the store on it, you have pretty much a blank page, which will not have much success in the SERPS.

Therefore, using the sidebar is better utilization that taking up a lot of real estate in the main body.

22 Nigel Nix { 10.30.08 at 11:16 am }

Hi David,

I don’t really agree with that.

What it does mean is that you will have to do a little keyword intensive content writing on each page drawing the search engines without being spammy.

I use plr articles which I rewrite with the free version of wordflood.

Yes, it requires a little work which doesn’t seem to pay off in the short term but which will yield massive results in the future if done correctly.

The most important thing being keyword researched content and relevant text anchor linking.

23 WordVixen { 10.30.08 at 12:36 pm }

Is there a way to change the dimensions? Because as is, it definitely won’t fit in my sidebar. In case you haven’t guessed, the “flat file” bit is complete Greek to me.

25 David Cooley { 10.31.08 at 6:31 am }

You are right, however, a lot of the stores I see being built have no content, if your goal is to just stick a store on a page, I would not do it. I would put it in the sidebar.

My suggestion on the use of the sidebar is for those who do not want to change what they are doing, but just add a the benefit of more relevant products to sell.

Another option is to place 3 or 4 items at the end of a post.

26 Kris Jones { 11.01.08 at 3:01 pm }

Great job with your Christmas / Wreath store!

Kris Jones

27 Kris Jones { 11.01.08 at 3:17 pm }

David,

I’m not sure I understand or agree with your sidebar rationale.

However, I do agree with you that javascript is not read by search engines (that’s why we also offer our feeds in flat file) and that it will be important to add content to the beginning and / or after the feed, but in and of itself it does not detract from onsite optimization.

Onsite optimization plays a much smaller role in gaining top search engine ranking than it ever has. Yes, optimized title tags and relevant content is important, but offsite factors, such as incoming links, are much more important to search engine ranking.

With the above facts in mind, the idea of just placing the products in the right toolbar doesn’t accomplish too much. Instead, I agree with you that bloggers and content writers should use Pepperjam Store Builder to monetize existing or supplemental content to the Store Builder.

For instance, if you have a themed blog it may make sense to tag several relevant products from Pepperjam Store Builder to the end of your blog post. With hundreds of merchants and millions of products you can create a product storefront as a supplement to content for virtually anything.

Think about it – what most bloggers do is just tag content with Google AdSense – while the blogger can make 20 cents or more (or less) by using AdSense…by adding a few product listings with Pepperjam Store Builder the blogger may be able to make several dollars or more per click. In addition, depending on the type of site product listings are much more attractive and are likely to result in more clicks….in addition to adding value to the content of the site.

Anyway – the point is that I disagree with the sidebar suggestion. The sidebar should be used for widgets or something else that fits well within a narrow environment.

I encourage bloggers and content builders to use Pepperjam Store Builder to complement existing or custom built content and then to build relevant links to the page.

Test it against AdSense and my guess is you’ll get more clicks and ultimately make more money.

Finally, Pepperjam Store Builder is optimized for Wordpress bloggers so now WP bloggers have a new way of monetizing Web traffic.

Kris,

The rationale is people not realizing the difference between machine readable code and javascript.

As usual, I do not make long enough comments to clarify myself, YOU CAN have success with Javascript, it just takes more thought.

We agree on this principle, with different approaches. You can not just throw things at a page though, you have to at least understand the importance of things like Title Tags, H tags etc. I have proven that you can have success with very little content, when the foundation is built right, with or without a lot of incoming links.

Thanks for disagreeing, I think I will join you. After looking at this, I realized the Pepperjam Store is a PERFECT solution to our Park Page monetization and I am in the process of building a plugin for this. It is also a better solution for placing ads in content, such as dynamic ads at the end of a post build automatically from the tags etc…

The plugin will also allow the end user to style the store from within Wordpress just to make it a little easier.

Hi Flustered,

Pepperjam Store Builder has added a WordPress Optimized enhancement making it very easy to add the required code to your pages. After you make your selections, simply scroll down to the Store Code section and check the box that says, WordPress Optimized.

By the way, your golf blog looks great! I am not sure if you realized this or not, but PepperjamNETWORK has a wonderful advertiser that would be perfect for your blog. They are called, Austad’s Golf.

Shop Austad's Golf Clubs Department

Austad’s Golf currently has over 2,200 products that you can add to your custom Pepperjam Golf store with just a few clicks of the mouse. Let me know if you need help.

Maura,

Thanks for the update on this. I look forward to it!

37 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 2:44 am }

Hi Rich,

Congrats on HuntingWith.com. Later down the comments you talked about having the code added to your sidebar in a conversation with Flustered. Do take a moment to review my comment that I am about to make below.

38 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 2:48 am }

Rich,

You should have no problems adding the code into a post or page when you build a WordPress Optimized code. This option is now available in the Pepperjam Store Builder.

Anyone can display the Pepperjam Store in the sidebar, but it looks so compact and tiny, I believe that proudly showcasing the products you are advertising should be in the main body of the page.

If you are still having trouble adding the code to a post or page, let me know and I’ll provide some added tips on how to implement the code.

39 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 2:49 am }

Hi Rich,

I had used WP-Super-Cache many months ago and it worked great! Only problem I had was that my advertisers who paid for rotational banners, their ads weren’t rotating because whatever image loaded at the time were cached.

40 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 2:53 am }

Hi David,

Actually you might want to tak another look. For example, in my account, I have access to 64 store programs of which generate at or above 100,000 products available to sell. That is quite the variety to choose from. ;)

41 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 2:54 am }

Good point. Perhaps in Dave’s case, he wasn’t joining the programs before checking to see what was available in the Store Builder.

42 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 2:56 am }

Eric,

Looking good bud! We have you added. ;)

43 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 2:57 am }

Very nice! We have you added. No, this make your the third. ;)

44 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 3:05 am }

Hi David,

I don’t think this would look very good in the sidebar of a blog. I understand your concern about javascript code generating content and images that can’t be seen by web crawlers.

I hear what you are saying about blank pages not having much success in the SERPs. With that, I would suggest that people do what they would do with any form of javascript, and that is to write content.

45 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 3:14 am }

Hi WordVixen,

You don’t have to worry about trying to stuff the store into the sidebar of your blog. You should proudly show off the items that you want to share with your readers and visitors.

If you are running a WordPress blog, I would suggest that you do the following:

1.) Search through the available programs in your Pepperjam Store Builder for things that will be appealing to your readers of your blog.

2.) Once you have all the items that you will be offering in your store, log into your WordPress blog and create a new page.

3.) Title this new page as the title of your store.

4.) Proceed to write a 150 to 200 word introduction about your store. Provide a very warm and friendly overview about it and mention the key products or category of product you are selling. By doing this, you create search engine friendly content for your store.

5.) When you write the content, use the same keyword targeting strategies that I have taught you in my previously written posts. Instead of building a niche blog (like I have demonstrated in the past) you are building a niche store, packed full of amazing things that you can sell.

If you need help or further suggestions, please let me know.

46 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 3:24 am }

Hi Al,

I think that is awesome that you accepted David’s offer of being a beta tester on the plugin that is being created here. However, in all fairness, I can’t accept this site into the contest using the plugin.

The only way your submitted site could be accepted into the contest is if everyone else had equal opportunity to use the same plugin that you used. From my understanding, this is a plugin that David wants to sell under The Niche Doctor project. In that case, this creates unfair conditions to other participants in the contest who might not be interested in purchasing the plugin and or simply can’t afford the plugin.

I think that it is great that David has taken such efforts to create a WordPress plugin for Pepperjam, but unfortunately it can’t be used in this contest because it is being presented as a sellable product.

I invite and encourage you to rebuild your store using the same tools that everyone else has available. Seeing how well you did the first time around, I can only imagine how amazing it will be a second.

47 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 3:35 am }

Hi David,

Seeing how easy it is to add the Pepperjam code into a WordPress page, I wouldn’t suggest stuffing it into a sidebar, instead I would suggest setting up the code in a WordPress Page.

For those who might have missed my above comment to WordVixen, take a look at my suggestion on how to successfully implement the javascript code into a Wordpress Page.

48 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 3:50 am }

Hi Kris,

First off, thanks for taking the time to visit the blog and address my readers and provide such extensive feedback. Granted, you wake up each morning and eat breakfast like the rest of us; however, you are indeed the CEO of a very successful company. Needless to say, CEO’s don’t really have to invest time into writing comments on the personal blogs of authors and I think it shows a lot of integrity investing time to speak to my readers directly.

With that said, I am addressing many of the questions here related to how to successfully implement the store builder code into a WordPress blog using the javascript code. However, one thing that I feel would be very helpful is if Pepperjam provided some instructions on how to make use of the product feed. Also, if one doesn’t exist yet, I think it would also be great for PepperjamNETWORK to provide a few YouTube video tutorial guides on how to use the store builder and make use of its advanced features.

Thanks again for providing such generous offers to my readers for trying the Pepperjam Store Builder.

49 Garry Conn { 11.03.08 at 4:04 am }

Hi David,

I realized the Pepperjam Store is a PERFECT solution to our Park Page monetization and I am in the process of building a plugin for this.

I understand that the special WordPress plugin is finished and you have provided me with the codes to sell it. Sounds like a really cool plugin. Also, it seems that Allyn is a beta tester who has also submitted an entry into the content using this plugin. To keep this contest fair, I think it would be great to allow everyone who participates in this contest to have a copy of this plugin at no charge.

Hi Collin,

I am not sure what you mean by entered at Pepperjam. Please explain.

http://www.pepperjamnetwork.com/blog/2008/11/05/announcing-the-pepperjam-store-builder-contest-with-2000-in-prize-money-exclusive-to-pepperjam-network-affiliates/

It doesn’t look like you can do a double entry. and actually their version of the contest is better, they are offering a grand prize of $1000. In the case of the contest hosted here, grand prize is only $100.

Hmm… if it was me, I’d probably forfeit my entry here and use it on the other. I wasn’t aware they launched this, but clearly Pepperjam’s own hosted contest is 10x better than the one being provided here.

58 Garry Conn { 11.05.08 at 5:42 pm }

To everyone who entered into the contest here. I am happy to announce that Pepperjam has decided to host this contest on their site. The great news about this too is that they have increased the grand prize amount to $1000.00.

I would recommend that you pack up and re-enter your site on their contest so that you have the chance of winning $1000 rather than $100.

Here is the link:

Hi WordVixen,

The only difference I can see in the contest that was listed here compared to the one at Pepperjam is the $900 dollar difference in the grand prize.

This contest is cancelled. It would be stupid to keep this contest active since Pepperjam decided to do the same thing on their site with a much larger prize.

I seriously doubt that Pepperjam will deny the four people who are enrolled into this contest to join the other one.

Secondly, the way this contest has been trending, it is a complete failure. Trying to find 25 people to willingly hand them $10 dollars to build a store, apparently isn’t something of much interest among readers of my blog.

Strangely, I never received any kind of notification about this new contest, and Collin happened to have left a comment above asking me if he can enroll into both to make more money. At that time I had no idea what he was talking about. After a few minutes I dug thru email and found the official announcement that was sent out mass email and then read the blog post on Pepperjam’s blog.

If Pepperjam doesn’t accept the small group of people who joined in my contest here… I will personally honor and pay you directly out of my own personal funds via Paypal.com.

Once again, please visit:

and enroll over there so that you have the opportunity to win the better grand prize. :(

Hey Garry,

I think it’s really cool that Kris Jones is having a contest over at Pepperjam. But, I think I’ll stick with your contest, as I’m sure there will be thousands of people joining the PJ contest.

Besides, what kind of a friend would I be if I turned my back on you in exchange for some extra cash.

Thanks for giving everyone a chance with this contest, and helping us with our PJ stores.

Garry,

I will e-mail you privately, but we didn’t intend to have you cancel your contest here, although we understand that you did. :(

Honestly, I felt this was a great contest idea and when it wasn’t picking up traction over here I thought we’d open it up to our 10K active affiliates.

We sincerely appreciate all the support you’ve given us and we will honor your contest should you want to continue it.
BTW – we will absolutely recognize any submissions that are made over here!

however, we ask that the submission also be made on our blog so that our judges have easy access to the link associated with the storefront.

Hi Kris,

The contest become a complete mess over here on my blog. There were many contribuing elements that played a factorization into the failure of the contest. I don’t take it one bit personal with you deciding to duplicate the contest on your site. It is a great contest. I am thrilled to see it become an instant success.

Here is what I would like to have done. The following sites are entries that were made on my blog.

http://HuntingWith.com
http://www.bbq-festivals.com/bbq_store.html
http://thefourthreindeer.com/commercialwreath/
http://mayanhammockresource.com/
http://www.christinesenter.com/gifts-galore/
http://ipodstore.bloggingfromscratch.com/

I would like for you and your staff to judge these six sites and crown a winner and then offer the five runner up contestants a free copy of your wonderful book.

If any of the six people above wish to decline this offer, I’d like for them to have the option of transferring their entry into the contest hosted on Pepperjam.

If we can do that, then I can call this contest a success.

Best Regards,
Garry Conn

@ Kris. I think it’s great that you’re still wanting to work with Garry, and to help him carry on his contest. That’s why you’re a step above your competition. And the contest you’re running is absolutely fantastic. My problem is that I’d be too freaked out to put my little store up against the likes of john chow and that sort.

@Garry. I’ll still stick with your contest. Not just because you’re my friend, but because I feel as though I’m in the midst of people more my speed. I mean, you’re readers are more up to speed on things than I am, I just feel more comfortable here. I’m not a genius, and I don’t have all the fancy tools to make a state-of-the-art site store.

I love Pepperjam, and they have some of the best clients I’ve seen. This was a cool contest, no matter what the outcome.

Hi Christine,

Basically I am asking Kris to see if we can end the contest early. You are one of the six people participating in it. So let’s wait and see what he says. With six people participating, that is 100% that everyone will win something. ;)

His book is awesome, it will truly teach you a lot about search engine optimization. I own the book myself and totally recommend it.

Garry, sorry about pointing that out. I hope me saying something didn’t tick you off as I was just looking to make a bit more if possible. Fire up another contest will ya so I can get in on it.

I got a comment contest going on all month on my site, leave a comment – get an entry type of thing. If you have a chance take a look.

Kris inspired me with a email tonight and now what was my entry into the contest is gone, and a new site name has been purchased with one goal in mind, to win the 1000 dollars. The site I am building will be me taking everything I know and putting it to the extreme test against the pepperjam judges and everyone who is entering the contest.

Once again Sorry Garry

Hi Collin,

You have absolutely noting to be sorry about my friend. No.. no.. no.. you did nothing wrong.

I think that it is great that Pepperjam decided to do the contest. It wasn’t running very smoothly on my blog. Their contest is so good, I just might enter it myself and show these ppl how it’s done! lol ;)

I just read the contest page on your blog and it looks pretty cool. I always love simple contests that don’t require a lot of time invested to participate in. From what it seems, you’re just looking for a little comment love and a way to increase your readership. There is never anything wrong with that, especially when you got some kick butt prizes in the mix.

I am sure the above link will get you a few of my readers to join in, you’ve got some great posts on the blog and I have read quite a few myself.

Garry, you really are a sweetheart. You know that? I’m happy to re-enter at PJ if that’s what’s decided, but I’m just as happy to be guaranteed a book! :-)

Honestly, I was surprised that you weren’t booked solid with entries the same day the contest was announced, just as I’m surprised that it’s taking this long for entries at PJ. You do good by us, so please don’t be too offended. :-( I was just about to post about the two contests on my blog, but I guess it’s a little late for that now.

Oh don’t worry about me, I am far from being offended. All I want is for you as well as everyone else who reads my blog to advance in their efforts towards squeezing out the dollars that can be made on the Internet. ;)

Let’s see what we can do when Kris comes back. Ideally, I think crowning a winner and scoring a few books to the runner ups would be absolutely amazing for you guys and gals.

I really do own a copy of his book, and it’s well worth the money to go and buy it online or at your local bookstore.

P.S. You’re still welcome to write about me on your blog and say something terrible wonderful about me. [hint hint] ;) LOL!!!

Squeezing out the money? That’s what I want too! :-) And you got it- just blogged about you. And the contest. We good, we all good.

Garry / Christine, others….

If Garry is interested in moving the entire contest over to Pepperjam Network that’s not a priblem.

We are happy to recognize each of the individual’s that have submitted store here.

However, I encourage each of you to submit you site through our blog since the final vote will take pace there.

Thanks to Garry for his continued support of PJN!

Thanks to the rest of you for being loyal supporters of Garry and for considering PJN an option to help to monetize your blogs and Web sites. :)

Garry and his readers are awesome!

Kris
