Top Five Ways To Better Invest Your Time Blogging
David Cooley asks, “how many hours do I spend blogging?” that is a pretty good question to ask. My answer is, Too many! All kidding aside, I usually have a computer up and running very close to 24 hours a day. Whether I am conscious when the computer is running, thats another question. It is funny that David called in this question. A few months ago I ran a survey and asked my readers the same question. The results were amazing. Over 54% of my readers invest 41 hours per week blogging. To me that is some shocking news. I fall right around that bracket, although I didn’t take my own survey.
So David brings up a really good question: How many hours do you spend each week blogging? And I can quickly see how this question can help me extend to you some other questions. How well are you using your time blogging? Time is something that we can’t control. It will always be and it will always slowly tick away.
As bloggers we can control a lot of things. But one thing that can’t be controlled is time. What are some things that you’re doing as a blogger to better manage your time online? Here are a few thoughts of mind that come to mind.
- Don’t check your email first thing in the morning. If there is really anything truly urgent or pressing in your inbox, the sender will go to extended lengths to contact you. Checking your email first thing in the morning basically dictates how you’re going to invest your time.
- Before doing anything, ask yourself what you want to do today with blogging. Have a plan, have some goals and spend the day ‘On Task’. When you have completed your goals then aimlessly surf the Internet.
- Turn your Instant Messengers OFF until you have completed your ‘Self Assigned’ work for the day. Instant messengers are just like email and have the same effects as checking email, but they’re much worse… they’re instant!
- Invest your time and money smartly. If you know that in your life you can only invest two hours per day blogging, then don’t get your hands into projects that will take 1500 hours to complete. If you feel very strongly that the project will be successful, hire someone to do it for you. If you’re not willing to invest money into an idea that you thoughts of, then it’s probably a crappy idea and won’t work! Look at it this way… if you were asking a lender for money to support your idea, he would ask the same thing, “would you be willing to invest money into your own project if you had it?” Whether you’d answer truthful, that’s your deal, but deep inside you know the truth… and if the answer was NO, then your idea sucks and move on.
- Barter, Exchange and Swap Professional Services. There is no reason in the world why you should expect yourself to rule the world by yourself. Ask a friend or trusted partner for help. Two heads are better than one. For example, let’s say that you need someone to help with writing content on your blog. Strike a deal with a writer so that they can begin writing quality content on your blog. They might want something that you can do that they can’t. An example of this is with me. Many writers want to become bloggers, but they don’t know the first thing with starting a blog, let alone designing them. So in my search for writers, I exchange out my professional service for theirs. I find writers who need me and my skills with building blogs. I build them their blog and exchange they write content for me.

Hey Garry, Thanks for the quick answer. Pretty funny, you and I do # 1 exactly opposite.
I check my email and drink my coffee first. I have so many alerts and subscriptions I find that if I do not check my email first I usually miss some breaking news or posts. Especially now with GrandCentral feeding voice mail to email. And using scheduled posting allows me to work 24 hours ahead unless something big is breaking that I decide to post immediately.
Other than that your list is pretty close to mine. As usual, great tips!

With respect to item number 2 I think that it is important to ask you self what you want to get done the next day. I like write my to do list the night before or before I leave work. This way I know exactly what I need to get done before I turn on my computer.

Instant messenger is a waste of time. I usually just appear offline, so I only have to talk to the people I need too.

Instant messenger can be a huge time waster… however, if done properly and if time is invested towards building up a private network of contacts, this can be a very powerful tool to use towards getting things blasted out into the mainstream blogosphere.
I try to make myself accessible throughout the day on IM so that I can continue to build social relationships with people. During the day, I’ll be very honest the people I speak with and explain that I am just too busy to yak. Either that, or I’ll explain that I am going to be very delayed with responding.
I look at IM as an instant email… so just like emails, its in your best interest to answer and respond; however most of the people I chat with in IM understand that I treat my IM Window very much like my regular email inbox and have the expectation of knowing that I am very slow to respond, but I typically and eventually do.

I want to address a concern that a few readers have privately come forward to talk to me about the new AskGarry!
Many people have told me that they are slightly reserved or even nervous to call me and ask me a question.
Guys I don’t bite! I am just a normal average Joe who want to help you become a better blogger. By providing this free service to you, I do two things:
(1) Help the blogosphere learn more about blogging and…
(2) Have some amazing writing prompts to build more pages and posts on my blog that will allow my blog to continue to grow.
Don’t worry about trying to sound perfect. Don’t worry about stuttering with your words, we’re all people and people are not perfect when it comes to expressing our interests, questions and things like that.
Here is another sample of a call that I have recorded for you that will help break the ice. The key thing is for your to feel comfortable, have fun and enjoy knowing that I am here to help you by answering your questions live on my blog.
In the process of doing so, you’re going to get some added exposure and traffic to yours! Have a listen to this message that I have recorded for you:

Garry, great points. All anyone has to do is go watch or listen to any of the Videos you and I did, we never worried too much about the way we sounded, just made sure to get the point across. Best way to improve your speaking is to just do it, and then be able to hear it.

That reminds me… I believe GrandCentral has a way to record a two way conversation…. I think I saw that thumbing thru the various service options. When I receive a call, I have the option of sending it straight to voice mail, or accepting the call, or accepting the call and recording the conversation.
If that is the case, then I will happily schedule any interviews, conversations, etc.. with anyone who wants to speak with me. I had a blast doing the Videos with David… even though they weren’t really videos… but perhaps this avenue could be much better.
I am 99% sure that this would work which would be excellent for the fact that all that is needed is a stinking telephone. No microphones, no special recording equipment and no software for editing. LOL!!! That is the kind of stuff I like… simple, easy and with little time or effort.
We should get a convo scheduled before I leave for Florida and catch up on some things. I think the readers would enjoy it.

Had to admit that when I read the last post about calling you 24/7, I had to go back and re-read the whole thing over again. LOL
This is really cool, and I think it could make for a great tool with interviews, brainstorming, and much more.
My concern is this, how much does it cost to make the call? Will it end up costing someone a chunck of change to make this call, is it one of those .99 a minute things?
Once again though, this is a cool idea.
Date/Time: 2-27-2008 12:12:00 Comment #11946
No its not a 900 line or anything like that. It is a standard telephone line and the cost to call would depend on your typical long distance plan or how you have your mobile phone plan set up with minutes and such.
It would be no different than picking up the phone and calling a out of state relative.

Oh, I don’t call my relatives, they always want money. LOLOLOL

Ha! Call me and you can count on me making recommendations like my last one where I suggested that you purchase a $2500 dollar computer chair. I give such great advice! I hear that this chair has some massaging and vibrating features for the ladies: Slow, Medium and Who Needs A Man.

I have to check my e-mail in the morning to see what I need to do for the day and follow up with leads. Instant messenger is a waste of time but I leave that on anyway just in case some one needs to get in contact with me. If I don’t need it I’ll just let the messages queue up.
