Three Cool Things You Can Do With A Mailing List
So recently I decided to get hooked in with Aweber.com and start my email mailing list. By default, I decided to use my mailing list as a way to deliver really cool content to my subscribers. I haven’t sent out my first mailing yet, but will do so soon.
I had an amazing showing during the first few days of displaying the form on my blog. Day one I had over 150 people join. Day two was around half that amount and then the numbers of signs up slowed down to around 10 per day. So my list is definitely growing and growing strong. I am reaching near 500 people now and I think that is really cool.
So what can you do with a mailing list? Hmm… that is a good question. For one, I’ll be honest and admit this, having my new mailing list is a little nerve racking. This is much different than blogging and just knowing in the back of my mind that I am about to send out an email to nearly 500 people makes me nervous!
Here are some ideas that I will be doing with my mailing list, maybe this will help you when you decide to create your own, or perhaps it will give you some ideas on what to do with your current one.
- Use your mailing list to direct traffic to your blog. This is very common and some folks like Joel Comm do that quite effectively.
- Use your mailing list to ask for opinions about certain topics and issues. Depending on what topics you cover on your blog, you may at times face writers block. If you ask your readers open ended questions and things related to your topic, you can score quite a bit of material to write about.
- Use your mailing list to promote products you like. This, unfortunately, is commonly abused. However, if you build up a reader base of people who trust and respect you and you don’t screw that up, then you can effectively use your mailing list to recommend products to your subscribers. An example of that would be Micro Niche Finder. I absolutely love that product and use it everyday and I am very comfortable making at recommendation to my readers and subscribers.
What else can you think of? These are pretty good suggestions, but I am sure that there are quite a few more things that can be done with a mailing list. What do you think?
For me, I am going to work on sending out my first mailing. If you haven’t signed up for my free email newsletter yet, fill out this form below:

I am thinking of creating a mailing list. I don’t have any ground breaking content to help people acheive millions in revenue so I think sign up will be slkow for me. I am looking at providing people with a few little things.
I may make my list weekly and it will be alid out with 3 or 4 headings. First may be something blight, like a little cartoon that I have found or drawn myslef.
Then maybe a personal update to let people know what I am up to and what I have planned.
Then maybe an article based around what the subscribers want.
Then maybe a product push that I have genuingly tested and recommend. For example MNF….
Would you read that from me?
I’d like to say that I feel that regardless of how popular RSS is and programs such as Google Reader and Bloglines, I think by default receiving a traditional and classic email naturally outranks in priority.
Now, I don’t know about you, but my Google Reader is full to the top! It can take me a long long time to read a subscriber’s new post via my reader. Yet when I get an email from Joel Comm or many of the other publishers I subscribe to via their Aweber subscription, they take priority in getting read.
Granted, I don’t do this on purpose. But it’s for the simple fact that they channel their content to me via email. Their content is still available live on their blog and it still shows up in my Google Reader. But if a publisher has a direct connection with a subscriber’s email box, I think the publisher has achieved a pipeline connection and gets priority.
Email lists are smart… even if you use them to recap or promote your blog content. Having an email list on your blog is an excellent option. I wish I had visioned its power a long time ago. I have had 7 people sign up for my list so far today!
Nothing seems to be easier than seeing someone whom you can help but not helping.
I suggest we start giving it a try. Give love to the ones that need it.
God will appreciate it.
