Video Blog #002 – Those Who Really Do Make Money Online Don’t Over Complicate Things

The title of this post has more truth than many will ever know. Those who understand what I understand are the ones who make money online or at least have a chance. For most people who want to make money online, they feel like they need to have advanced training, years of programming experience, and super human geek powers in order to do it. And to be quite honest, I think the people that harness these characteristics are the ones who’s own skills come back to bite them in the face.

In order to make money online, you really and truly can’t over complicate things. Consider what is needed to survive. Consider what you would be willing to do in order to make ends meet in the real world. Before you’d lose your house, you’d be willing to work at Burger King for minimum wage if that was what was needed in order to make sure that your kids have a warm meal and a roof over their heads. It’s called survival and people do some weird crap to survive, believe me I know.

In order to make money online, one really must have that same mentality in mind. One really must believe that there is no other option and that this is the only way. One must also believe that they can not fail, because if they do, it means your ass. It means, you’re done for… throw the keys to your house at the banker and collect your shit and put it in brown boxes and have fun living on the side of the road.

If you consider this to be an element of survival, you will make money online and the amount of money you make will far exceed any minimum wage job. As illustrated in my video blog, take the simple things and push forward with them. I am sure that you are well aware that web hosting companies pay big dollars to have their services resold. With that said, I am sure you sit on your ass and assume that everyone already has web hosting. That is just one of many of your over looked and over complicated failures.

Web hosting companies pay anywhere between $50 to $125 dollars per sale. It is your job to find and tap into a resource abundant in people who never have had a web site and have always wanted to have one, but felt like it was too complicated to build one. That is where you can become a hero and someone who can save the day.

You are a blogger. You’re someone who takes pride in your blog. You’re someone who has spent time and energy into making your blog look awesome. Do you not consider that to be a skill? Do you not consider that to have value? People want that… and believe it or not, people will pay you money to provide that to them. And for those who are cheap, you can be cheap too and provide all that to them for free knowing that your web hosting company will pick up the tab and pay you instead.

Money can be made online. The question is how bad do you really want to make it? If you are like me, then making money online is not just a challenge, it is a means of survival.  And remember, those who really do make money online don’t over complicate things. The people that spend too much time thinking, do much less time working and creating forward momentum.

I totally agree with you, but its funny when people around the world assume or better still most teachers of IM makes it look simple to do when in actual fact you need to dedicate some point in your life like sday (28 hours a day if possible) to this thing called online marketing,make it your life, make people reason it that its all you’ve got, I have a problem with my family i=on this they think its a bunch of idea that won’t work, but thats up to them not me for sure

2 Jarret { 01.30.09 at 2:13 am }

Wow Garry, that is a great idea about the web hosting thing. I always knew that you did it promoting your blog creation service yet I never though about advertising in the local paper!

Hell, you don’t even have to advertise locally, there are a ton of small businesses that would love to even have a basic website made up for them. This is a really great idea and thanks a ton for sharing it ;)

BTW, I do have to agree that people tend to over complicate things. Now while I may know more then most people about WordPress and web design I will have to say that by reading your blog and applying the tactics that you have talked about I have in fact made money.

Sure it hasn’t been a whole lot of money, but I am in fact making money online. And quite honestly, I would have not been making any money had I never found your blog and had you not taken the time to help me out and give me some tips and tricks! :D

Oh almighty wise guy,
love the passion… THAT is why you make money online my friend. You can teach people how to make money online all day long, but you can’t teach passion like that! lol. Great idea to resell hosting. I had never thought about it quite like that. Always been afraid to sell web design because I’ve never been quite good, enough even for myself. I’ve learned alot from you though so maybe that’s an option now. :D

4 Jarret { 01.30.09 at 2:21 am }

With all the free WordPress themes out there nowadays as well as CSS templates for static sites you don’t even have to be a web designer.

A lot of people aren’t even going to be aware let alone care if you don’t personally create the site yourself. I believe that as long as they are provided with a website that they like they will be happy.

I really dig those kind of “no BS” presentations. You couldn’t be more right, Garry. I think about it myself almost daily. If I really wanted to or HAD to, I’d devote much more time into this and just simply make it work. I do over complicate things and I know it. That was a motivational speech aimed at me right there.

Thanks, dude.

I think you have a valid point Garry but I think the fact is that most people don’t NEED to make money online to survive. I know that there are those that do and the funny thing is that the almost always succeed (if then don’t go out and get a J.O.B. instead).

Being one of those that do not NEED to make money online I have to say that you can still do it easily but you’ll need something else to drive you forward. It can’t be that you need it to survive because you don’t but it can be that you really HATE your job, you have the long commute, you hate not being able to go on several vacations every year.

Or on the positive site you really enjoy building stuff, you like to put theory into practice, you do it to keep your self esteem high because when others can do it then you can do it.

Whatever it is you need a REASON. Personally I would not want to have survival drive me but I can see how that would definitely work.

I would rather find something else to drive me so that I had built that “passive” income in advance so that loosing my job would not bring to point where I had to figure out how to survive.

When your down, and troubled, and you need a helping hand, Garry comes through to kick you in the ass. Thank you!

8 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 3:09 am }

Agreed. If you can build yourself a blog you can build one for someone else. The only thing left to do is to walk right into your customer’s house with the confidence as if you have been doing this line of work for 10 years.

Not only will you provide an amazing service to your customer, but they will get diarrhea of the mouth and tell all their entire family and friends about you and soon your phone will ring off the wall with word of mouth referrals ending with you getting more business than you can throw a stick at.

9 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 3:14 am }

… there are a ton of small businesses that would love to even have a basic website made up for them.

You can even go simpler. Start with some people within your family. Ask friends… then ask your friends of friends. What do they care? It doesn’t cost them anything other than $4.95 / month for hosting and you pocket the web hosting referral fee.

My advice would be to start with family and friends… especially if one isn’t comfortable with interacting with customers. You can use your family and friends to role play, or to rehearse how you will act and present your service to real customers in the near future. Call it on the job — PAID — training. ;)

Thanks for the comment Jarret, I am glad this one hit home with you bud.

10 Jarret { 01.30.09 at 3:22 am }

Quick question for you, when you do refer somebody to HostGator or BlueHost or another company how do you know if it was really them that signed up?

11 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 3:23 am }

Hey bud!

You are welcome. ;)

… I do over complicate things and I know it.

Oh come on now… we’re not talking about the VIP themes you’re brewing up! :)

{joking}

BTW…I do have your emails and will reply back to you later this afternoon.

12 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 3:30 am }

I ask my customer to forward me a copy of their welcome email that contains their username / password and primary domain assigned to their account. From there in my HostGator.com affiliate dashboard management screen I cross reference and link up the two. Thirdly, I print copies and file them. Once HostGator.com processes my Paypal.com payment I go back and X out the monthly batches that proceeded within that payment.

If there is a discrepancy, I then investigate why I didn’t get paid and make an attempt to collect. (The last part doesn’t happen too often though). HostGator.com goes a great job pre-screening commissionable sales VS non-commissionable sales. If the sale doesn’t grant commission, I immediately explain to the customer that their sale failed to generate a sales commission for me.

Most times I ask HostGator.com help determine why and in most cases it is because the customer clicked on someone else’s banner a week prior and the cookie was still held. That is why I now ask people before they order with me using my referral link to please CLEAR their cookies prior to clicking my link.

13 Jarret { 01.30.09 at 3:34 am }

Ah ok, then you would have to sign up with the hosting companies program and not use a third party network such as CJ or similar.

That is what I had thought that needed to be done yet was not 100% sure and thought I would ask in case others were wondering as well :)

14 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 3:41 am }

Hey Judd!

Ha Ha… you know the rules…. “There’s no crying in baseball!” (Big Tom Hanks Fan) and yes, I kinda have that, “Move Your Ass Soldier!” mentality. lol

:)

15 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 3:50 am }

Yeah… I kinda didn’t have much luck doing this with CommissionJunction, mainly because it was so hard for me to track. I honestly don’t know if BlueHost has a direct program like HostGator.com; but if you are looking for an alternative, you can also work with host595.com. They have a direct aff program as well as one within the PepperjamNetwork, plus they are really friendly to speak with.

I just prefer HostGator.com though… I have liked them for awhile, and back a little over a month ago when I deleted the public_html folder of BloggingQuestions.com, they got my site back up in less than 15 minutes. Stuff like that carries a lot of weight for me in choosing who I do business with. They have always, since day one, been very kind to me. ;)

16 Dave { 01.30.09 at 4:24 am }

Good video Garry. I wish you were wearing your opticals. You were looking like a clown nut head without it, seriously.

I do agree with you that people over complicate the money making process a lot.

17 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 4:45 am }

Hi Mikael!

Thank you for taking the time to write this comment. It is very meaningful and makes me think. Here are my thoughts based off what you said.

I don’t think many people really NEED to make money online. What did people do before the Internet was invented? (Know what I mean?)

Granted, the Internet sure does open up a ton of doors for folks who have trouble earning a living in the offline world. But, I believe that there is a solution to every problem. So if the Internet didn’t exist, people who are desperate for alternative income will find solutions within other means.

Having that said, I’d like to share my thoughts with you regarding survival. I totally understand that many people don’t need to make money online to survive. For many people, they have very nice careers and jobs. Some people are lawyers, others people are in upper management positions for larger corporations, etc… So when you say that people who don’t NEED to make money should find some other element to aim for to give them motivation, I do know what mean by that.

However, the instinct of survival is probably one of the more intense feelings a human can experience. It is an automatic reaction to keep oneself alive. If you stick your hand in fire (unless you’re stupid) you’ll pull it away quickly.

Using the power of survival as a way to leverage motivation towards achieving a goal is quite effective. I understand that many people indeed have very nice cushy jobs and making money online isn’t a matter of life or death. While having the mindset of saying, “Oh I hate my 50k year job” can be a motivational tool towards achieving success online, a much more powerful tool is to say, “Oh Shit… I don’t have enough money to eat.”

If you act as if you are broke, then more natural motivation will fill your bloodstream towards finding success. If for those who do have cushy jobs find it to be difficult to act as if you’re down on your luck, then just purposely skip a few meals and leave your cell phone at home. Maybe even leave your Beamer in the garage and take the bus to work.

The point is this: If you want to make money online, and you want to achieve your goals, then you will do what it takes to win. Here on my personal blog, I am perceived as being a very caring, giving and super nice individual — which I am — however; when it comes to survival, I am the most aggressive, intense, and ruthless person you’ll ever meet.

Aside from the instinct of survival comes another behavior almost equal in units of energy. And that the power of competition. With that, I must say that I am extremely competitive. Everything I do is a competition. Every game I play, I play to win, even if it is something as stupid as a game of Monopoly. If I lose, I figure out why and never make the mistake again.

Why do I do so well online? Because I am a super competitive and controlling freak who acts as if I am so intensely hungry as if I haven’t eaten a hot meal and slept in a comfortable bed in years. Is that true? No… but when I am working, I amplify this feeling to such a high level of intensity, it allows me to make decisions based off survival. A very basic example of this is how most people say, “Oh… I’ll do it tomorrow.” Instead I say, “I better do it NOW because tomorrow will be too late!”

I guess in the long run it doesn’t matter what element one uses to feed fuel into the motivation fire. Go into your woodshop and carve an MMO Budda wood doll and pray to it, drool over an expensive car that you can’t afford on the car lot, or simply act as if your life depends on it… Do what ever it takes. If one is serious about making money online, they won’t fail. Those who want to make money online and fail will often have 100 excuses why they failed with 0 solutions that provide corrective actions.

18 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 4:50 am }

I wish you were wearing your opticals. You were looking like a clown nut head without it.

I never knew that a thin metal frame could mask the truth. Is this your first time reading my blog? Welcome to my world, I am a clown nut head! lol

But really, I don’t see a resemblance. Oh wait… that’s nuts chin… my bad.

:)

19 Mikael { 01.30.09 at 5:19 am }

Since I don’t have any problems making money online I might not need a wooden MMO Budda but damn that would be a cool gadget :)

Having the gift that you obviously have of controlling your mindset is an extremely valuable gift and one that will help you succeed in any endeavor you set your mind at. The reason I wrote my comment is that even though it might come easily to you I know for a fact (just look at the results people aren’t getting) that most people either don’t know that they should practice this or they have a hard time doing it.

Personally I’m far from a mental state where I’m able to act as I my life depended on it (when it doesn’t). I do spend a fair amount of time trying to improve my personality through books, audios, coaching and seminars and I’ve come a long way. Now one might call this “an excuse” but I see it more as an explanation of the situation. I know where I am and where I’m going but I am also aware of the time element involved.

So back to Making Money Online I am in a situation (like most others) where I can’t pretend my life depends on my success and therefore I’ll use things like competing with myself (and others) to drive me. I think it is important that every single individual finds the thing(s) that drives them as they can use this in all aspects of life (works perfect with exercise and eating healthy as well).

Will everyone find this “thing” that drives them? No! Why? We don’t know and NOBODY knows. If nobody knows should we then care? I think not (even though I see myself as a caring person as well). I think this refers back to the frustrated post you did a couple of days ago. I know you’re trying your best to help people and I’m sure you have helped more people than you know and because of this you’re an outstanding human. Most people are only spending time to help themselves but not you.

So with that said please just keep at it like you have always done and you’ll end up helping thousands of people.

Mikael

P.S. Monopoly is probably the greatest game ever invented!

20 Garry Conn { 01.30.09 at 6:09 am }

LOL @ the Budda! I should get that domain name and sell them on eBay! ;)

Very true, Monopoly is totally one of my favorite games. However, chess is my ultimate favorite. ;)

I think this refers back to the frustrated post you did a couple of days ago. I know you’re trying your best to help people and I’m sure you have helped more people than you know and because of this you’re an outstanding human.

You are right. I do get frustrated more often than I should actually. I am working on that. I don’t have too many “blow up” posts anymore because I have actually had quite a few friends call me up on the phone and pretty much say, “WTF were you thinking!?!?”

The funny thing about my personal blog is I am constantly learning more and more about how to run a successful blog, rather than just make money from one. It is so much more of a challenge to run a blog aimed at teaching people how to make money online compared to just going about my day doing my thing that makes money online. (Did I say that right? LOL!!!)

This may come as a fork in the road for some people who read my blog, because often most everyone who read my blog wants to know, “how do I make money online” and while I can show people what I do and how I do it, in many ways its like showing people a car that is completely out of gas.

For sure, people can open the door, sit in the seat and turn the key. However, if they can’t supply their own fuel, the car isn’t going to go any where. At that point, many people quit because they can’t find fuel. Some people do find fuel, but then they discover that they don’t know how to drive and give up. Other people have fuel, know how to drive but then don’t know where to go and give up. And then there are people who have fuel, know how to drive, know where they’re going but then they are soon faced with a road block and give up.

If someone asked me what is one of the ten most memorable elements of running this blog, I would have to say that witnessing people quit would be in the top ten. And yes, witnessing quitting and losing is something that frustrates me.

Two things that you said I have to directly comment on:

I’m sure you have helped more people than you know.

I believe I am starting to see this within my mailing list. There are so many people who aren’t comfortable leaving comments LIVE on the blog. Instead they actually reply back to me via the mass mail I send out.

Having the gift that you obviously have of controlling your mindset is an extremely valuable gift.

For me, this isn’t really a gift of controlling mindset, because it is actually a reality. Deep in the back of my head I know that if I fail, I don’t have a cushy job to fall back on. I am totally 110% self-employed and my entire family depends on my single income.

If I don’t come into this game each day with the mentality mentioned in the above comment, then I put myself at a greater chance of failure. And if I fail, I cause hardship to not only myself but wife and four children. And I am sure you know that cheesy classic saying from Gene Kranz. Well, in my world it is true. Failure, in no shape or form, is an option available to me.

As crazy as this might sound, I can tell you that I have the best job in the whole world and I wouldn’t trade it for any other. ;)

21 Kathy { 01.30.09 at 8:29 am }

This was actually a really great post with some thoughtful comments to bring it home.

Sometimes when you’re feeling like crap the most insightful truths just come flying out.

I’m bookmarking this for when I need a good swift kick in the ass – or was that a slap on the butt? I like my life lessons with some humor and that customer service technique that you suggested will keep me giggling when I’m working late into the night.

Thanks for the post, and feel better soon!

22 Monty's Mega Marketing { 01.30.09 at 10:31 am }

It doesn’t get any more plain and simple than that, Garry. I remember when you used to have the little Hostgator tag-line at the bottom of each blog post. That was a great idea.

I might just have to get more creative when it comes to selling hosting.

23 Denton in AZ { 01.30.09 at 11:47 am }

oh…My…GOD that was funny!

Dude you are totally right…of course…DUH! I had a scare yesterday. I was told my job was “going away.” That sucks but I was able to find myself a spot elsewhere in the company.

Now, if I had lost my job it would take weeks or even months to find a new one in this economy. In that situation where I’m looking but not working, I would HAVE TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE. It’s a matter of attitude. I spend a lot of time on my computer after work. My wife understands what I’m trying to accomplish…she’s patient.

As another blogger friend puts it, “you have to bust ass!” That means turning off the tv. That means getting less sleep. That means total commitment. If you don’t, you wont hit your goals.

24 Wayne { 01.30.09 at 12:48 pm }

Garry, you hit the nail on the head again. It’s like you’re speaking directly to me.

I’m in that damned boat. I can whip up a site no problem, style it a little, but graphics, forget it. And that is where I fall down. I need to get over the fact that i can’t do graphics and find someone that can. Inevitably, when you build a site, they want you to handle all aspects of the site. And they expect you to be able to do that.

My head is changing perspectives…thanks for helping with that. This year is going to be much different for me…I can smell it. :)

25 webgoddess { 01.30.09 at 12:49 pm }

LOL, if you can’t make at least minimum wage online (what’s that like 30 bucks a day take-home?) then you might as well go get a day job.

To me, a bad day for making money online is less than $500.

All you need is to send qualified traffic to an offer that converts.

That’s IT…it’s not more complicated than that.

26 Steve@weightlossweapons.com { 01.30.09 at 2:26 pm }

Excellent video Garry. The survival factor hasn’t played too much into my situation up until now. My Wife just got laid off so maybe that will get me motivated to put in the effort I need to get from the $300 a month mark to $1000 a month.

Keep the videos coming, I can see the passion and feel the motivation in them and you just can’t get from text.

Steve

27 PatrickSugarfix { 01.30.09 at 6:05 pm }

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Garry, this is great. We need more stuff like this. A lot more of it. It breaks anxiety beautifully and it’s a damned good motivator.

In fact, I’ve got a great idea for you: start a video blog. Five- to ten-minute videos every day that are exclusively of you bitching people out. Seriously. It would be a huge hit. Give people video-audio slap in the face every few days. Your ads would sell like hotcakes!

28 Nick { 01.31.09 at 1:03 am }

Thanks for the video. I like the idea of developing sites for local people, but never thought of doing it like this. I always thought I would have to figure out a fee to charge that they would agree to, etc. Alternatively, what are your thoughts of taking this one step further and actually setting up the hosting account for them? This would help ensure that you are getting the commission and what not as well as providing yourself with access to actually get in and set the site up.

29 Bryan { 01.31.09 at 1:12 am }

Garry, excellent video. While I probably don’t fit in the category of needing to make money online to “survive” the fact that I am making some money helps. I haven’t been making money online for long and expect to receive my first commission check on 1-Feb.

You are spot on about attitude though. You have to want to do it and make the sacrifices to get results. Give up the tv shows and xbox. Give up some sleep. Be willing to conduct research, code, and exchange emails at 2 AM (or later!). Garry, you’ve helped me out more than you know. Thanks.

I think I have a new motto:

“Smack her on the butt!”

30 Dave { 01.31.09 at 8:11 am }

haha Garry, you did not approve my comment eh because of your nut head looking comment. haha, what an asshole you are.

31 Amanda { 02.01.09 at 11:29 am }

Hey Garry–this is an idea that I’ve been messing around with in my head for the past couple years believe it or not. :-)

My husband owns a small computer company setting up networks and servers for small businesses and for a short time I started designing websites for his customers. I found it to be a lot more trouble than it was worth–it seemed like they were always wanting me to change this or change that. It was never a “set it and forget it type of thing!” I can see how setting up a website for individuals instead of businesses would be a tad easier–although my husband says that home users are extremely high-maintenance.

With businesses you also have the option of setting up their Aweber account which could be another source of revenue. Now that I know how to tweak Wordpress to look more like a static website I think I should give this idea another try. And maybe I’ll leave my husband out of it this time. :-)

32 Amanda { 02.01.09 at 11:45 am }

Forgot to ask in my last comment: What if you have a reseller hosting plan with Hostgator? Do you recommend becoming your own web hosting company or is it easier just to use Hostgator’s built-in affiliate program? I’m assuming it’s not possible to do both right?
