What If Obama Was A Make Money Online Blogger?
I really enjoy reading MeAndMyDrum and I invited to Mark Sierra over to my blog so that he could twist things up a bit with his very unique, creative and entertaining writing style. Be sure to check out his blog if you get a chance, he’s got some really great articles on it.
Now to be honest, I am not really all that much into politics. Reason being is because I think pretty much all politicians are stupid, crooked and corrupt. With that being said however, I enjoy talking to Mark about it because he always has an opinion about politics or the events taking place.
So last night I was talking to Mark and I had asked him, “Hey Mark, what do you think it would be like if Obama was a make money online blogger?” Immediately he started to spit out all kinds of stuff typing at 90MPH and filling up my GTalk instant messenger. Finally I said, man… save this material for the blog. And so I present to you, Mark Sierra’s take on if Obama was a MMO blogger.
What If Obama Was A MMO Blogger?
Written by Mark Sierra
So now that we’ve finally narrowed it down to two candidates for the presidential race, let’s have a little fun with the topic.
What if Barrack Obama were a make money online blogger like us? Do you think he’d be successful at it? And I’m not talking about his donation requests that he currently has on his blog. Let’s take that out of the equation for now. In fact, let’s do this: let’s say he’d still use his blog for financing his presidential campaign, but he’d make a few design changes.
Instead of asking for donations directly, he would rely on the money he’d make from promoting affiliate networks like pepperjamNETWORK and their merchants, placing Google AdSense ads, maybe even selling advertising to promote other blogs and services.
What would his blog look like then? Would you expect to find certain types of products he’d be promoting? Would they be culturally based, perhaps leaning more toward the black community? Or would they represent all communities equally?
There’s no denying that there’s a large number of people holding their breath hoping to see the first black president in the Oval Office. I don’t think the color of one’s skin should, by any means, be a factor when considering the qualifications of someone in any position, especially the presidency. But I do see why people would let that cloud their judgment without realizing it.
And how would his supporters respond to this imaginary change in his blogging strategy? Knowing that Obama’s relying on the income he’d be making on commissions, would they buy things just because it helps him even though they’d hate the products they would buy?
There’s no doubt in my mind that Obama would be successful at making money online, but only for a short period of time, and not for the reasons you might think. I propose that his supporters would see it as a means to an end — just get him elected and the blog would die a fast death shortly after the election. Right up to election day, they’d encourage everyone they could to visit his blog, drive traffic, promote the heck out of it and get people clicking on the ads and buy products.
Whether or not you support Barrack Obama, there’s no arguing that he’s an eloquent and influential speaker. In fact, I’m sure he could sell ice to Eskimos. So there’s no question he’d be very good at identifying keywords to weave into his content to get high search engine rankings. Hehe…I can see it now, “I’m asking you to believe in changing the blogosphere! Operators are standing by.”
So what do you think? What would the Obama’s MMO blog look like and would it be better than John McCain’s?

Obama was hiring open source developers for his site a while back. He probably has a better understanding of the internet and I think he’d be a better online marketer than John McCain, but a president its going to be hard to tell.
Now, I think in online marketing Ron Paul would give Obama a run for his money. You see, Ron has a cult following, similar to that of some A-list bloggers.
No doubt that Obama is a great organizer and was smart enough to bring in some very bright young savvy Internet operators to build out his Internet advertising campaign. Their ability to build a massive email list and to effectively use that list to raise money speaks volumes to those geeks understanding of Internet promotion.
Just imagine how much money Obama could bring in if he used that same list to sell, say an Obama for President baseball cap. Zoowie! I bet the Internet MMO gurus would turn green with envy.
As for Obama’s effectiveness in the Whitehouse if he manages to take out the almost Internet illiterate McCain (just look at McCain’s ads, all about him, not about how we together can bring about change) that is really an unknown.
My own opinion is that no matter who wins the presidency he will be waking up at 3:00 AM, phone ringing or not, and wondering as he stares at the ceiling “why in the hell did i want this job? The helicopter rides just aren’t worth it”.
Productive Internet marketing depends upon a reasonable budget. There actually is a good deal of truth to the old adage that you have to spend money to make money. By budgeting wisely, you will be able to get the greatest advantage from the money you do spend on marketing and promotion.
I assume Obama is smart enough to ave speech writer so who knows what the actual quality of his writings would be like.
She he is an awesome salesman so may be great at promoting crappy clickbank products to unsuspecting housewives….
It would be interesting to see….McCain wouldn’t stand a chance!
Maybe he should post an affiliate link on his site to a cafepress store with merch. Might get him a little extra cash but ruin his reputation.
Hi Owen,
I’m with you. Marketing is definitely a skill he has, but lacking in the “skills for president department”.
Oh man, wouldn’t that be some list he would have accumulated? That’s the kind of list that Internet marketers dream of. Even factoring in people who wouldn’t respond to his promotions, he’d still make a killing from those who do.
And he definitely has the money to spend!
Yep, selling ice to Eskimos.
Hey JK, McCain would have to pay big bucks to get the level of marketing Obama could do with his blog, for sure!
Hey Garry, thanks for letting me have the driver’s seat for a while. I appreciate it!
I was just looking at a clip on CNN when a reporter asked Bush a few months back ‘What do you think of the $4/gallon gas prices analysts are predicting?’ and Bush replies ‘That’s interesting. I haven’t heard that.’. Not totally relevant but I don’t think it’ll get any worse with Obama. His Internet marketing skills are just a sign that he is in touch with reality.
Nice post, Mark. Stumbled.
I think his blog would be an anti obama website. That way, he could watch all of McCain’s campaign money disappear click by click.
Or maybe not. Cheers!
