I received a really great question sent in from Dave at a really crazy and unique blog called, Tailgating Ideas. First off before I go into my post, I want to encourage everyone to visit his blog. A blog about tailgating… now that is original! Nice work Dave!
Anyway, his question is a very simple but very good question to ask. He wants my opinion on when should a blog author start displaying their RSS FeedBurner Subscription numbers?
Should you install the FeedBurner Chicklet right out the gate at ZERO and look like a total noob, or should you wait until the numbers get higher? If so, then how high?
Here is his voice mail sent into me, take a listen:
This question was so awesome, I had to cover this topic in three parts:
Part One:
Part Two:

Hey Gary, thanks for answering my question and for the glowing endorsement of my site, http://www.tailgatingideas.com. Right now my RSS numbers have been hovering around 35 to 40 depending on the day. I was going to post the chicklet on my site when it reached 50 and see if that helped encourage others to subscribe in conjunction with a little more shameless self-promotion as you suggested. I use WordPress as my blogging platform and have a plug-in that recognizes first time visitors via cookies and automatically displays an RSS suggestion box to them. (It goes away after two page views so it does not become annoying) I will start placing an RSS suggestion at the base of posts as well and see if that helps my RSS numbers. Thanks for the quick response and I am now a new RSS subscriber to your site. You are one more closer to that elusive 1,000 number you are hoping to reach.

Awesome! I am glad that you enjoyed the post. I had a feeling that there were plugins that did that. However, in my case, I just decided to hard code a few lines in instead. I have a huge amount of daily search traffic compared to regular reader traffic, so I too am working on increasing my subscription numbers.
Thanks again for subscribing!

I personally believe that you should wait until your subscriber count reaches 100. That’s what I’ve been waiting for on my blog, it’s taking me a while but I’m floating at around 65-70 subscribers right now, hopefully it won’t take me too much longer.

Write a post on your blog that explains about your RSS and offers some reasons why people should subscribe to it. Set up some self promotion boxes in various areas on your blog that encourage people to sign up and then do a simple break tag and then below that, put: Learn More… and then link the words, “Learn More…” to the post you just wrote.
That was a month later or whatever when that post get buried, it remains an active static style page that offers people to learn more about why they should subscribe to your feed.
See: The Airplane Blog | Top right corner. You will see the learn more link which then leads to a page that explains about the RSS feed, why they should subscribe and then in detail it walks my readers and visitors thru the entire process.
