Why Do SEO Blogs Have to Over Complicate Things?
I have invested part of the last week into visiting and researching the level of knowledge, quality of published content and professional demeanor of quite a few of the publicly perceived leading SEO blogs. Today in this article I want to present to you my thoughts and tips based off my experience and journey into the realm of the SEO blog niche.
SEO Isn’t so darn complicated.
SEO is the practice of designing or re-designing a website, or blog so that it is very friendly for search engines to quickly scan and index the content from within. There is nothing complicated with this process. The only complication that many people face is the fact that they lack the ability to build a website or blog that is friendly for search engines. This is no different than taking an individual who has never flown an airplane and expect them to fly a Boeing 747. If you are a Boeing 747 pilot, you may feel that the processes involved in flying the jet come easy. In reality, it may very well be easy. However, again, if you’re not a pilot and you’ve been put into a position to fly the jet, you’re sure to crash it.
The same thing can be said for SEO. The good news though, making a blog or website search engine friendly, the process is actually a lot easier than flying a Boeing 747. I spent a week snooping around many of the, what the majority of people call, well known and trusted SEO blogs. My findings were overwhelming and I left with a headache and not learning a damn thing.
How Do I Make My Website or Blog Search Engine Friendly?
First I must say, and as mentioned above, the process of learning how to build a search engine friendly website or blog doesn’t happen over night. Your options are to (a: learn how to do it yourself or, (b: hire someone to do it for you. With the latter option, I can not personally recommend anyone for hire. Secondly, and to be honest, I am a hands on type of guy and I believe that by encouraging individuals to learn things for themselves, they can excel further in what they want to accomplish rather than hiring something out. Some could consider this a weakness, others could consider that admirable. Make no mistake, I have no problem passing the buck and paying someone to do something for me. However, before I do that, in most cases I would like to learn the skill or at a minimum educate myself before having someone else do something for me. Maybe this behavior has come by my many terrible experiences dealing with crooked auto mechanics. One thing is for sure, if you’re an Internet publisher, commonly called a blogger, I feel that it is in your best interest to understand SEO or at least have a trusted friend who does and is willing to help you for a fee or free.
SEO isn’t complicated. My advice to you would be to stop what you’re doing right now and begin educating yourself. Admittedly, I have never really communicated this publicly, I invest a huge amount of time into studying and learning about search engine. I am an avid book reader and I take what I learn in books and apply it into real life (or dot Com) situations. Yesterday I returned a comment submitted in from two readers. In this comment, I kind of pour a little of my heart out. I would recommend reading it.
To answer the question, “how do I make my website or blog search engine friendly” I think it would be a wise decision to visit your local book store. Of course, you can shop online; however, I prefer visiting my local book store. Frequently, during basketball practices or during many of the other free taxi services I provide for my children, I visit bookstores. I am able to pass a little time away from computers and sit down in a very comfortable chair and listen to very relaxing background music in a very quiet environment, while I scan through various books I consider for purchasing.
Many people shun books and I don’t understand why? Books are one of the key elements to education, the other is a teacher. However, there are books published and designed to rule out the teacher, thus having the creation of “Self-Help” books. I can’t imagine children not having books in the education system. Secondly, I can’t imagine children not having teachers. However, as adults, our minds are fully developed. We can self-teach and learn from our own powers and motivations. This is true for learning SEO.
If you are interested in learning SEO, I would recommend getting a good book. There is nothing wrong with books, but many people don’t like them because they don’t supply the instant fix that many desire. There is NO instant fix with SEO and just like many skills that have to be learned in life, it takes time. If you are blogging or publishing for the long haul, if you want to be more successful with making money online, you can’t deny the power of the free search engines. Understanding how to utilize the search engines as a publisher and understanding how to build websites, pages and blogs that are search engine friendly is the root key to my success. If you follow and read this comment, at the bottom, you’ll see two books that I personally recommend.
Good luck with your dot Com ventures, I hope that you have found this post to be helpful, inspiring and motivational. Feel free to drop me a comment, I’d love to hear from you.

Excellent post Garry, SEO is not “Rocket Science”
Like we have discussed before, if most bloggers would just fix their page Titles, they would be amazed at the difference it makes in the SERPS.
I have a beautifully written Mini e-Book for sale that shows just how to do it too. Look on my sidebar, $6.95.
I was reading everyword twice to get tips on making my new site search engine friendly and all I got is “books” not even a title of a good book that you have read.
Oh never mind I just saw your comment about your “book” smooth Gary. But I will make you a deal, if I don’t learn anything will you refund me? lol
No. But what I can do is promise to do what typical scam artists do, and that is to promise you that if my first book doesn’t work for you then to by my second one which is double the price but has double the information.
Joking…
If you have an interest in changing just one file in your WordPress install, then my mini e-Book will show you how to make your post title structure very search engine friendly and readable.
Ok that makes sense smart ass. I will grab it later I am just writting a post about a blog who is giving away 25 bucks a week for the life of his blog to increase traffic.
Why don’t you run a contest Gary, they really seem to boost up traffic. Oh and when Feed Flare is live as in the social netwroking aspect of the site not just the blog part of it I will be hitting you up for a prize doantion.
so pump out more mini ebooks, that could be a good prizes….”The Garry Conn colection”
You mean I have to give more stuff away for free… Sheeshh.. I think I am getting burned out on freebie stuff.
Honestly… I really don’t need one. What people need to understand is if they read this little old blog or not… one thing remains the same… I have a shit eating grin on my face when I go to the bank.
If you want to capitalize on the free traffic Google can send you as well as all the major search engines, start your venture by spending $6.95 on a little and easy to follow instructional book that I wrote that will guide you with fixing your title structure in your header.php file so that you can score the SERP results you deserve.
If you want to get a few knuckles in Google’s ass and give them a prostate exam, I would suggest buying Googlepedia.
If you want to learn the art and skill of SEO, then I would buy the book titled, Search Engine Visibility.
Colin, YOU should take advantage of that….
“If you have an interest in changing just one file in your WordPress install, then my mini e-Book will show you how to make your post title structure very search engine friendly and readable.”
…I really think it would make a world of difference on your site. IMHO.
Ok fine I am going to buy your book, and fix things around. Oh ya I wanted to say the other day when you posted my email in ask garry, I can’t beleave you posted the words Ass Clown in the title…..it showed up that way in my links….lol
ok So I downloaded your book, which didnt save to my computer and I added the code to where you said it had to go and both sites could not load…….so what now.
Collin,
I just sent you a direct email with some questions regarding your situation. There shouldn’t be any problems. But considering that there are a few things that can go wrong, lets see if we can get this working for you. Drop me a reply back and we’ll get things fixed up.
Well I removed your code and placed the old code back in it. When I tried to load the site after it was in I was getting an error on line 8 that displaied at the top of my screen, on both sites.
When copying text to a website, always make sure the characters are coming across properly. The best way to do this is copy and paste in a good text editor, no a word processor, just a plain text editor.
What is the exact error on line 8?
David, I was exspecting the book to download when I loaded it like everyone other one I have recieved so I didn’t bother to save it. So I don’t have that code anymore.
Garry email me a copy please and lets try this again.
Colin, ok, When I got it I did not have a problem saving it, so I am not real clear on that issue. But, no worries. I just tested it again and placed the code on NonPartyPolitics.com , and everything worked like a charm.
I would bet the issue was in your text copy. I always paste into TextPad before moving code to Wordpress or any other program source.
Collin,
I think I can improve on that. What happened immediately after you processed your payment you were redirected to the location of the PDF file. When that happened your web browser automatically opened the PDF file for you to view. From there you can save a copy.
I am going to revise this and make it so customers will need to download the book in a zip file so there is no mistake with not saving a copy to their computer.
@ David,
Hey man.. thanks for the added support with Collin. That is awesome dude… great feeling of community here man. Nice work!
Ya you always have to remember there is us guys that don’t do things the way we are suposed to all the times…..I am going to fire you that email right away.
Collin,
I am trying to email you back but your account keeps bouncing my emails back. Can you email me from a different email or check your account. Thanks.
Sorry to interupt the conversation guys, just wanted to make a comment if I could.
I agree with you about SEO. It just ain’t that complicated. Of course, this attitude is what got me in hot water with Aaron Wall a couple of weeks ago ;P
I don’t mean this to demean the work all the SEO pros out there do either. I’ve only learned what I know from months of reading top notch blogs.
Ad Tracker,
Get me up to speed with the situation with you and Aaron.
Ha Ha! It’s not really a situation at all. He just didn’t care for the comment I left about his book on your post a couple of weeks ago.
I said I thought it was kind of dry. he featured it on his blog and said I didn’t appreciate it because I won it. If I had paid $70 or $80 for it I would have valued it a lot more.
I started to respond with my own blog post but got too busy trying to make money and forgot
Garry
What account were you trying to send an email to where it bounced back. I have email my host regarding the extreme pain it has been getting the feed flare account working right.
what do I have to do to get my picture to show up in the comments?
@ Collin,
I replied to the email address that you emailed me to. Yahoo.ca
I’ll try again.
To get your avatar to appear simply visit http://www.gravatar.com
@ Ad Tracker,
Yes… I am sorry I totally forgot about that. I remember now what you are talking about.
@ Collin,
Do you have another email address?
I keep getting this returned to me when I try to email you.
Thanks for the tips Garry. I’ve been trying to learn SEO myself, I feel like I’ve been tricked after a recent “seo consultant” told me he could guarantee I would rank #1 for one of my business sites. But I just dont think there is a magic button to do it, it takes a lot of time and there are no guaranteed results.
Mark,
I am guessing your name is Mark, judging by your email addy. Not sure why you put your handle as “shoemoney lies” but I’d like to get to know you by your real name or a screen name that isn’t offensive to readers.
Welcome to my blog and thanks for commenting. I do agree with you, there is no magic button and I’ll add to that.
The SEO business is a very profitable and corrupt business. Many people who claim to be or act as if they are an “SEO Experts” provide a disservice to thousands of business owners and individuals.
Quite honestly, I feel the SEO niche falls in a very close second place to the MMO niche. Both niches promise people the world and give false hopes to those that pay them good money.
Garry is there an attachment to the email. When I got up this morning my inbox was loaded with over 30 emails. I emailed you a ask garry question from my feed flare account so maybe try that one.
Looks like that email addy worked better for you.
Now I just need to find out what my site map url is so I can get those other issues fixed……what the heck is up with Yahoo mail?
[...] I’m already writing about it – Garry asks “Why Do SEO Blogs Have to Over Complicate Things?” Good question. I’m not an SEO expert, but I can tell you that most of the basic (and [...]
