Yahoo Pipes: A Complete Video Tutorial On How To Use Yahoo Pipes

with 15 comments

Earlier this week I wrote a post about how I wanted to figure out how I could take all my various RSS feeds (StumbleUpon, various blogs I contribute on and a few of my other blogs) and mash them all into one Mega RSS feed for my readers.

I asked my friend, David, if he could help me. We messed around quite a bit with Google Reader. We were able to take multiple feeds and put them into a shared folder to create the one RSS feed for reader; however, there were MANY limitation and things that I didn’t like about this option. Google Reader didn’t allow me a way to filter or sort the content I wanted to syndicate.

David then showed me Yahoo Pipes. And I have to say… my jaw DROPPED!!! Yahoo Pipes is amazing! You can mix, mash, filter, sort, twist, turn etc… anything you want. Include your FlickR account, Stumble account and throw in your Google video uploads… etc… With Yahoo Pipes, you can do just about anything.

The problem…

I didn’t freaking know how to use it!! I went back to David and explained to him that I was very impressed with Yahoo Pipes, but I have NO CLUE how to use it. In return, he told me that he would make a video tutorial on how to use Yahoo Pipes and also offered to share it with my readers. I was so happy to hear that!

So, with out further delay… here is the post that many people have been waiting for. This week I received around 100 offline/online responses and follow ups on when I was going to release a solution to creating a MEGA RSS Feed for your blog, and here it is.

If you would be so kind… I would really appreciate it if everyone would take an extra second to DIGG THIS ONE! I could really use the votes! :)

Enjoy the video and be sure to tell David thanks! I have no idea about doing videos, but this one is killer and I am sure he has quite a bit of time invested.

How To Use Yahoo Pipes

As mentioned above, I could really use some DIGG votes and if you have a StumbleUpon or Sphinn account, showing me a little love there too would be awesome!

  1. I have to say that I would have been stumped too were it not for the video. I’ll have to look it over a couple of times, but thank you David for putting this together and Garry for bringing the topic to surface!

  2. Now that I have posted the video I am going to work on creating a very nice new syndication RSS feed and replace it with my existing one, which is burned in FeedBurner. Doing this will allow me to upgrade my source feed without losing my FeedBurner subscriber numbers.

  8. Also worth checking out is Orchestr8’s AlchemyPoint, another mashup tool. It lets you mash up web pages as well as RSS/ATOM content, and provides some pretty neat visual content scraping capabilities.

  14. Woah! Now I’m really impressed by this, I’d never really looked at Pipes before, had real idea of what it was capable of, but now I’ve got a few ideas going round my head of how I could make use of it.

A great video Garry, are you planning on publishing more tutorials like this?
